Press coverage of early commercial marine autonomy projects is remarkably broad given the small number of marine industry professionals engaged in bringing these projects to market. The much larger assembly of industry stakeholders are left wondering what marine autonomy means for them. W R Systems, Ltd. (WRSystems) announces two key appointments in its Maritime Technologies Division: Mr Arthur Thomas Senior joins as Vice President – Maritime Business and Mr Mike Kellner joins as Director – Maritime Business. WRSystems’ Maritime Technologies Division supplies Radar, ECDIS and Inertial Navigation Technology as part of a full suite of navigational products. Art Thomas leads the expansion of the Maritime Technologies Division within WRSystems. Mr Thomas’ team at WR Systems builds on the company’s extensive experience in design, supply, installation and through-life support of navigational and communications equipment. Mr Thomas has extensive experience in the commercial maritime electronics sector.

Eltech Electric Inc, the marine and industrial electrical and electronics specialists has purchased Ships Co Ltd, the designer of marine monitoring and alarm systems. Herb Myers, founder and President of Ships Co Ltd will head a new Eltech Alarm Systems Division that will design, build and install bullet-proof alarms systems for the marine and other harsh environments. The systems will continue to be sold under the SHIPSCO brand name.

Crowley Liner Services has launched a major refurbishment of 25 seagoing tugs to extend their lives at least another 15 years. These U.S.-flagged, Invader-Class vessels, each of which is crewed by six seamen, are widely used throughout the Crowley system for a variety of jobs, including the ocean towing of the company's triple-deck RoRo barges between the U.S. mainland and Puerto Rico and specialized contract services. Crowley's multi-million-dollar investment includes the rebuilding of the tugs' main engines, effectively returning each to zero hours. This provides a marked improvement in the overall operational performance and reliability of the tugs, each of which is capable of generating a powerful 150,000 pounds of bollard pull ahead and 7,200 maximum continuous bhp.
