New Electric Craft Runs Emissions Free
The new Light 18 from Wing Systems is the first of a new wave in power boating. Propelled by emission-free Torqeedo electric motors, this revolutionary craft has set a new standard for high performance and low environmental impact.
Named as the acronym for Low-Impact Green Hull Technology, the Light 18's hydrodynamic hulls were designed specifically to take advantage of the benefits of Torqeedo's high-efficiency electric outboards without sacrificing maneuverability, stability and speed. Equipped with two Torqeedo 9.9 hp motors and four lithium batteries, the Light 18 has a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 10-12 knots. At a touring speed of 6-8 knots it has a range of up to 10 hours. Clean, gasoline-free operation makes the Light 18 particularly useful for environmentally sensitive applications such as water quality management or reservoir maintenance.
"Making its debut at Charleston Race Week as a media platform, the Light 18 was quick, nimble and able to get close to the action without disturbing the sailors with wake, noise and exhaust," said Steve Trkla, president of Torqeedo, Inc. "Torqeedo's quiet electric motors allow for easy communication on the water, so they're ideal for safety vessels or coaching boats."
"It was clear to me that Torqeedo motors allowed us to address an emerging need in the marketplace," said Skip Barker, Wing Systems' director of special projects. "This is the first time Wing Systems has built a power boat and using the Cruise motor fulfills our company goals of creating environmentally sustainable marine products. Torqeedo's been a terrific partner and a joy to work with."
