Bay-Houston Towing Orders New Tugs from Sterling Shipyard

Gulf LNG Orders Four New Tugs

Gulf LNG Tugs of Brownsville has ordered four new tugs to serve the Rio Grande LNG export facility (RGLNG), which has commenced construction in Brownsville, Texas.Gulf LNG Tugs is a joint venture formed between Bay-Houston Towing Co., Moran Towing Corporation and Suderman & Young Towing Company to provide tug services for RGLNG under a long-term tug services agreement.The company announced Tuesday it signed construction contracts with Coden, Ala. shipyard Master Boat Builders and Port Neches, Texas shipbuilder Sterling Shipyard.

MARAD Awards $20.8 Million in Grants to Small Shipyards

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) on Wednesday announced $20.8 million in grant awards to 27 small shipyards in 20 states through the Small Shipyard Grant Program. Callan Marine's new Jones Act cutterhead suction dredge (CSD) General MacArthur and its accompanying idler barge have entered service in Texas, heading to work on several projects before transiting to Corpus Christi for the second phase of the deepening and widening project.The newest and largest dredger in Callen Marine's fleet, the General MacArthur represents the next generation of dredging technology and crew comfort, said Maxie McGuire, President of Callan Marine.“The General MacArthur is a complete game-changer for the dredging industry,” McGuire said.

Madelaine-D 2502 Delivered to Argosy Barge Lines

Argosy Barge Lines, LLC of Bellaire, Texas, accepted the Madelaine-D 2502 as the newest addition to their fleet in March 2013. The ABS-classed deck barge was built by Sterling Shipyard of Port Neches, Texas. The barge was designed by Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI) of Bristol Rhode Island, and construction of the vessel was overseen by BHGI’s sister company, The Shearer Group, Inc., of Houston, Texas. Madelaine-D 2502, named after Mrs. Madelaine D. Griswold, an officer and owner of the company, is a 250 ft x 54 ft x 12 ft load line deck barge with an allowable deck load of 2,500 lbs/ft2.

EMMF Enters Gulf Coast Barge Market

ExxonMobil Marine Fuels (EMMF) announced it is to offer a full range of marine fuels (HFO and MDO) for barge delivery in the ports of Beaumont, Port Neches, Port Arthur, Orange, and the Lake Charles area of the US Gulf Coast. This new service extends EMMF's previous USGC sales capability and improves its global supply network consistent with the efforts to meet the needs of its customers. Joe Rud, Manager of Marketing and Supply for EMMF, said: "This is good news for shipowners who wish to purchase high quality fuel in the US Gulf Coast region. It is also a good example of the combined strengths of ExxonMobil Refinery & Supply, EMMF and our barging partners coming together to expand product availability and services to customers."

River Remains Closed; Clean-Up Continues

The lower section of the Neches River from just north of DuPont plant to the Veteran’s Bridge remains closed as the oil spill clean up continues. "The safety of our responders, and the restoration and opening of the Neches River as quickly as possible are our main goals," said Capt. Sharon Richey, Commanding Officer of Marine Safety Officer Port Arthur and Captain of the Port. "We have more than 175 responders now on scene working to clean the river. The recovered oil is being taken to a holding tank at the local UNOCAL facility, where it will be recycled. The oiled snare boom and adsorbent pads are being stored in roll-off boxes to be disposed of later. Initial clean up costs are estimated to be $700,000. The costs will rise as clean up continues.

Oil Spill Clean-up Continues in Texas

The Coast Guard established a safety zone on the Neches River from just north of the DuPont plant to the Veteran’s bridge. No recreational boaters will be allowed into the safety zone until more of the oil has been removed. Both the Coast Guard and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will be patrolling the area to ensure that recreational boaters observe the parameters set by the safety zone. Since the Neches River’s opening at approximately 11:44 a.m. Wednesday, a significant amount of ship and barge traffic has been allowed to move in and out of port. As of 4 p.m. today, ship and barge traffic is largely back to normal with the exception of nine ships and barges that must be washed down before heading into uncontaminated water.
