MAN Developing Methanol Retrofit Solutions for Medium-speed Engines

MAN Energy Solutions announced it will begin developing retrofit solutions for medium-speed marine engines as part of a research association including WTZ Roßlau gGmbh and TU-Darmstadt. The three-year research project, ‘CliNeR-ECo’, is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) with initial work having already commenced at the beginning of 2023.CliNeR-ECo aims to develop concepts for diverse, medium-speed, marine engines that will enable the retrofitting of entire ship fleets at reasonable economic and technical costs.

Rolls-Royce Acquires Electrically-assisted Charging Technology

Rolls-Royce said it has acquired from G+L innotec the exclusive rights of use for a new technology for the electrically-assisted charging of off-highway combustion engines in the power range above 450 kW. The new invention from the development and engineering services provider based in Laupheim in southern Germany is protected by patents and has thus not been available on the market to date. Rolls-Royce plans to offer engines of its MTU brand with this technology as of 2021. “Electrically-assisted charging is a milestone on the way to the hybridizing of the engine. Using this technology, it will be possible for us to develop agile, low-consumption engines,” said Dr. Johannes Kech, Director of Development Turbocharging & Fluid Systems at MTU.

Harris Pye Announces New Scrubber Installations

The Harris Pye Engineering Group is currently engaged in turnkey scrubber installation packages for major cruise line companies. On August 3, 2016 Harris Pye completed the installation of an Advanced Emission Purification System, fully automated, which was duly DNV GL certified which met with MARPOL regulation 14 of Annex V1 for the control of emissions complying to regulations 14.1 or 14.4. The design package for open and closed loop systems was utilized to model and fabricate all piping systems, hardware integration, and major/minor steelworks. Along with new exhaust tail pipes, sea chests were installed with the vessel in service along with the associated overboard discharges.

Rotork Acquires Masso

Rotork announced it has acquired Masso Ind s.p.a., a manufacturer of shipboard valve remote control systems (VRCS), to enhance its range of flow control products and services for the worldwide marine and offshore industries. Masso VRCS solutions include hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems that are compatible with most integrated automation systems required for critical safety applications. The Masso product range also includes hydraulic quarter-turn and linear actuators, hydraulic power packs, solenoid cabinets and electro-hydraulic actuators for shipboard applications.

Deepwater Market Surge Spurs Ensco Drillship Order

UK-based Ensco has ordered an additional advanced-capability DP3 ultra-deepwater drillship based on the Samsung GF12000 hull design. The vessel, ENSCO DS-10, will be the eighth Samsung DP3 drillship in the Ensco fleet, further extending the benefits of Ensco’s fleet standardization strategy. It will be built at the Samsung Heavy Industries, Co. Ltd. (SHI) shipyard in South Korea, with delivery scheduled for the third quarter of 2015. The agreement includes an option for an additional drillship of the same design. Ensco Chairman, President and CEO Dan Rabun said, “We continue to see very strong demand for rigs in existing deepwater markets, along with growing demand from emerging exploration areas.

3rd CIMAC CASCADES: Seminar for Younger Engineers

The third staging of the CIMAC CASCADES seminar for younger engineers and students took place at the ETH Swiss Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland on June 8, 2012. Organized by the CIMAC National Member Association (NMA) in Switzerland, the Division Combustion Engines of the Swiss Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Industries (Swissmem), the event was considered a considerable success by all attendees. In what may become the standard framework for a CASCADES event, the seminar itself was preceded on 7th June 2012 by a visit to a member company’s facility.

ABS to Class Ensco Deepwater Drillships

Ensco plc has selected ABS as the class society for its advanced-capability, ultra deepwater drillship to be built at the Samsung Heavy Industries, Co. Ltd (SHI) Shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. The ENSCO DS-8 will be the sixth Samsung DP3 drillship in the fleet and will extend the benefits of Ensco’s fleet standardization strategy. With drilling capabilities in water depths to 12,000 feet and a total vertical drilling depth of 40,000 feet, this new vessel will meet the demands of ultra deepwater drilling. “Samsung is the market leader in drillship newbuilds and utilizes advanced shipbuilding technology. We’re proud that ABS will be the first class society to deliver this new drillship design,” says In Yong Jeong, ABS District Principle Surveyor.

Korean Shipyard Wins Ultra-deepwater Drillship Contract

Ensco plc has has ordered a new advanced-capability, ultra-deepwater drillship to be built at the Samsung Heavy Industries, Co. Ltd. (SHI) Shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. The vessel, ENSCO DS-8, will be the sixth Samsung DP3 drillship in the Ensco fleet, extending the benefits of Ensco’s fleet standardization strategy. It is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2014. Including commissioning, systems integration testing, project management and spares, the construction cost is expected to be approximately $645 million. ROMAR International Secures Shell UK Contract

Aberdeenshire-based oilfield service company ROMAR International has announced a contract award with Shell UK. The scope of work involves ROMAR providing swarf handling equipment and personnel to recover metal cuttings during the plugging and abandonment of six wells for the UK oil major. The ROMAR specialist equipment removes metal contaminants from all forms of drilling fluids. ROMAR is currently in the process of planning to mobilise equipment and crew to Shell’s Shearwater field in the central North Sea for the next well at the end of October.

Alfa Laval Acquires Aalborg Industries

Alfa Laval – a leader in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and fluid handling –signed an agreement to acquire Aalborg Industries Holding A/S for a total cash consideration of $729.6m, on an enterprise value basis, from Altor 2003 Fund, LD Equity and the Company’s management. Aalborg Industries has some 2,600 employees and is expected to generate sales of about $481.5m in 2010. The acquisition will be accretive to EPS from 2011. The closing of the transaction is subject to clearance from regulatory authorities. Headquartered in Aalborg, Denmark, the company is a provider of products, systems and service solutions, today mainly to the marine and off-hore markets, but it also has an increasing exposure to the power industry as well as to other industrial end markets.

70 Shipyards Awarded ARRA Grants

The Department of Transportation has announced 70 grants totaling $98m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds that will be used to improve small shipyards throughout the United States. The funds, awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Assistance to Small Shipyards program, will help create and preserve jobs, provide valuable employment training and make much needed improvements to shipyards across the country. The Small Shipyards Grant program provides up to 75 percent in ARRA funds for a project and requires the remainder be matched by the shipyard. A detailed list of the grantees is as follows. •    Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc.,  Philadelphia, PA: $2,312,614, for the first year of training program.

All-In-One Dye for Leak Detection

Tracer Products has developed a fluorescent dye, TP-3405CS Dye-Lite All-In-One, improves leak detection in all oil and oil-based fluid systems. It is effective with all UV and blue light lamps. TP-3405CS Dye-Lite All-In-One dye contains two fluorescent dyes. One fluoresces best under UV and the other under blue light. The dye is circulated through the vehicle’s fluid system and will escape with the host fluid through the small leaks. When the system is scanned with a high-intensity Tracerline UV lamp, the dye will glow, spotlighting the exact location of every leak.

Curtiss-Wright Acquires Nu-Torque

Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE:CW) has acquired substantially all of the assets of Nu-Torque, a designer and manufacturer of electric and hydraulic valve actuation and control devices primarily for U.S. Navy ships. The business will become part of Curtiss-Wright's Flow Control segment. Curtiss-Wright Chairman and CEO Martin R. Benante said, "Nu-Torque also provides the opportunity to expand our presence in the U.S. Nu-Torque was founded in 1980 and acquired in 2002 by Tyco Flow Control, a unit of Tyco International Ltd. With annual sales of approximately $8m, typical applications for the Nu-Torque products are for valve automation of shipboard fluid systems, such as fire main, ballast and various safety systems on numerous categories of Navy combatant ships.

Halliburton Wins $40M Contract

Halliburton Worldwide Limited has been awarded a two-year, $40 million multi-service contract by Occidental Mukhaizna, LLC, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation for the Mukhaizna Field in the Sultanate of Oman. The contract calls for Halliburton to provide an integration of services from the Fluid Systems, Drilling and Formation Evaluation, and Production Optimization divisions. The range of services includes fluid services, cementing, casing attachments, directional drilling, mud logging, reservoir coring, and completion tools.

Engine Oil Analysis Kit Launched

Jet-Care International and its parent company Spectro Oil Analysis Co. Ltd. introduced a new engine oil analysis kit and service for the marine market that can save long delays and expensive repairs. "With proper monitoring of oil and fluid systems, marine operators can significantly reduce wear caused by contamination from sea water, fresh water, fuel dilution or the use of incorrect lubricants and save long delays and expensive repairs," says Spectro chief chemist Colin Stevens-Hoare. "In bigger vessels, oil sumps are so large the oil's never or rarely changed. Most operators try and clean the oil, but some are complacent, relying on their purification equipment to remove contaminants.
