U.S. Navy Disrupts Pirate Attempt In Arabian Sea

U.S. Naval forces disrupted a pirate attack on M/V Falcon Trader II, a Philippine-flagged merchant vessel, after it reported it had been attacked by pirates March 24. All 20 Filipino crew members of the Falcon Trader II are safe and in control of the vessel. At approximately 10:30 a.m. (local), aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and guided missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), conducting operations supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, responded to a distress call from the M/V Falcon Trader II reporting that suspected pirates in a small skiff were attempting to board the vessel.

Enterprise Strike Group Exemplifies CNO's Maritime Strategy

The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Adm. Gary Roughead, along with the Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC), Gen. James Conway and Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Thad Allen released the "Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower" on Oct 17. As the maritime strategy was released, Enterprise Strike Group (ENTSG) was executing it while forward deployed in the 5th Fleet area of operations. The new strategy stresses the importance of the Navy's core capabilities of forward presence, deterrence, sea control, and power projection as well as its expanded core capabilities of humanitarian assistance/disaster response and maritime security. ENTSG's assets are currently deployed throughout the Eastern Hemisphere in the performance of those missions.

SECNAV Visits Big E

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Joseph R. On Nov. 24, the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), Donald C. Winter, spent time on board USS Enterprise (CVN 65) to thank members of the Enterprise Strike Group (ENTSG) for their dedicated service. Shortly after his arrival, Winter made his way to the ship's hangar bay to address the crew. "I am here to thank you for everything you are doing on behalf of our Navy and our nation," he said. "The effects your efforts are having, combined with the effects the joint operations are having are making a big difference. Winter then held a question and answer session with the ENTSG Sailors and Marines, discussing topics such as expansion of the fleet, tuition assistance and individual augmentee billets.

USS Alexandria Receives MUC Award

By Lt. The crew of USS Alexandria (SSN 757) received the meritorious unit commendation award, Nov. 26, for their 2006 deployment with the Enterprise Strike Group to the 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet areas of operation. Alexandria, a Los Angeles-class nuclear powered submarine, was recognized for its achievements during its deployment from May to November 2006 in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Maritime Security Operations. According to Cmdr. Mike Bernacchi, Alexandria's commanding officer, the multi-mission capabilities of the Navy's modern submarines have been clearly demonstrated by Alexandria over the past few years.

Enterprise Strike Group Arrives in 5th Fleet

The Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG) entered the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations Aug. 1 to conduct Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in regional waters and provide air support to ground forces operating in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Enterprise CSG is part of the ongoing rotation of U.S. warships to the region.
