GE to Supply Propulsion Systems for MARAD's New Training Ships
GE’s Power Conversion business has been awarded a $40 million contract to supply the power and propulsion systems for two National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMV). This new class of purpose-built ships for the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD) will be used primarily to provide cadets with at-sea training on operational vessels.GE was selected as the single-source vendor (SSV) for the ships’ propulsion system, which includes the integration of the diesel engines…
Electric Shipping Study, Pose2idon
BMT Defence Services Limited, a subsidiary of BMT Group, is heading a consortium of 30 companies to investigate the commercially effective application of electric ship technology in a $30.3m European Union funded project. The ultimate aim of this study, which will begin in January 2009, is to provide a working guide on how to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of the combined European commercial shipping fleet. The Power Optimised Ship for Environment with Electric Innovative Designs ON board (Pose2idon) project will see BMT Defence Services co-ordinate the activity of the 30 company consortium which includes Converteam Technology Limited, DCNS, DNV, SAM, Sirehna, GICAN, EMEC and BALance.

ALSTOM Wins $102M Navy Deal
ALSTOM has won a second order of around $102 million to supply an integrated electric power and propulsion system for the Royal Navy’s Anti-Air Warfare Type 45 Destroyers. Following on from the first contract in April 2001 for batch one, this order is for batch two vessels and was awarded by BAE Systems Type 45 Destroyer Prime Contract Office. The order for the integrated electric power and propulsion system also includes the supply of major items of equipment including: 21 MWe alternators, 2MW diesel generator sets, HV switchboard, service transformers, VDM25000 PWM drives, 20MW 15 phased advanced induction motors (AIM), harmonic filters and the electrical power management system.
Alstom Presents Integrated Electric Propoulsion at Euronaval
ALSTOM will present its latest developments in the field of electric propulsion at this year's Euronaval Naval Defence and Maritime Exhibition and Conference. In particular, its Mermaid™ electric propulsion system to be fitted on the future Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs) for the French Navy. Mistral & Tonnerre will be the first military vessels ever to be propelled by this type of propulsion that has already been tried and tested in several merchant vessels. The manoeuvrablity and availability of the LHDs will therefore be improved considerably. ALSTOM will also present the Advanced Induction Motor (AIM), which was selected by the Royal Navy for its three new T45 destroyers currently under construction.
