Singapore Completes First Methanol Bunkering

Maersk and Hong Lam Marine have conducted the world’s first ship-to-container ship methanol bunkering operation of a Maersk’s container vessel at the Raffles Reserved Anchorage in Singapore.This was also Singapore’s first methanol bunkering and it was conducted with the support of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), government agencies and research institutes.Maersk’s container vessel – the world’s first container vessel sailing on green methanol – was successfully refuelled with approximately 300 metric tonnes of bio-methanol via Hong Lam Marine’s Singapore-registered tanker…

OCIMF Updates Safety Guide for Tank Barges and Terminals

Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) and the inland navigation sector with the support of the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) have collaborated with other European organizations to produce the second edition of the International Safety Guide for Inland Navigation Tank-barges and Terminals (ISGINTT).The purpose of ISGINTT is to improve the safe transport of dangerous goods at the interface between inland tank barges and other vessels or shore facilities (terminals).

UK Launches Offshore Wind Leasing Round

Australia’s Largest High-speed Lobster Boat Delivered

Dongara Marine has delivered Australia’s largest capacity high-speed lobster boat, the 85-foot Holdfast.With capacity for 210 baskets or 6.2 metric tons of live lobster, Holdfast is the fourth 20+ meter lobster boat in as many years to be designed by Southerly Designs, joining Ohana (2015), Daydawn (2016), and Gambler (2017).Although not the lead builder for the Daydawn and Gambler projects, Dongara Marine played a key role as the manufacturer of their resin-infused composite wheelhouses.

FueLNG Completes First Commercial LNG Bunkering in Singapore

FueLNG, a joint venture between Keppel and Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Ltd (Shell), has achieved the first commercial Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunker transfer in Singapore by completing truck-to-ship bunkering for the Floating Liquefaction (FLNG) vessel, Hilli Episeyo. The LNG bunker transfer, which was carried out in batches from 22 July to 23 September 2017, was conducted in accordance with the Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SCIC) Technical Reference for LNG Bunkering (TR 56), which provides a safe, efficient and sustainable technical framework for LNG bunkering operations. IBIA Supports Efforts to Ensure Integrity of MFM Systems

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) believes the benefits achieved from adopting mandatory use of Mass Flow Meters (MFMs) for marine fuel oil deliveries in Singapore must be protected by effective enforcement, and that using approved MFMs to measure quantity being loaded onto bunker tankers as well as that delivered to ship would address a missing link in supply chain integrity. The Singapore regulation that came into effect on 1 January 2017 was widely perceived to be a significant step forward in promoting greater transparency and ensuring the accuracy of delivered tonnage in the port, but it hasn’t all been plain sailing.

Coalition Urges Congress to Address Asian Carp in the Great Lakes

Hong Kong Establishes New Maritime Body

Hong Kong is to establish a new government body - Hong Kong Port and Maritime Board - this year that oversees the local maritime sector, in a bid to enhance the city’s shipping sector. Hong Kong's chief executive Leung Chun-ying in his annual policy address for this year announced that the government will merge the existing Maritime Industry Council (MIC) and the Port Development Council (PDC) to form a new Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board. The board, to be chaired by the Secretary for Transport and Housing, will promote manpower development, marketing and research on all fronts to develop a high value-added maritime services sector, he said.

The Coast Guard Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced its 2014 board of trustees. Consisting of 117members, the Coast Guard Foundation Board of Trustees and Directors oversees management of the organization and helps to provide resources to advance the Foundation’s mission to support the service of men and women in the United States Coast Guard. Elliott Bay Design Group Opens Office in Alaska

Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG), the naval architecture and marine engineering firm based in Seattle and New Orleans, has established an office in Ketchikan, Alaska, to meet growing customer demand in that region. EBDG said it is the preferred service provider for a number of Alaska-based companies with which it shares long-standing relationships. EBDG is a member of the Ketchikan Marine Industry Council and shares that body's commitment to expanding Ketchikan's marine industrial capacity. Safety Data Sheets for Chemical Tankers

Intertanko, the International Parcel Tankers Association (IPTA), the Chemical Distribution Institute (CDI), the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and the Dangerous Goods Advisory Council (DGAC) have completed a comprehensive information paper on the requirements for Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for Chemical Tankers. This information paper brings together the regulatory requirements and guidance governing the provision of SDS and outlines the key information that should be contained in a safety data sheet. This paper is intended to serve as a single point of reference for seafarers, owners and shippers. SDSs are documents which convey hazard information to anyone who may be involved in the preparation, handling, use and/or carriage of substances of mixtures that may be hazardous.

Drydocks World spearheads the launch of DCMMI

Drydocks World, a service provider in the maritime industry, has announced  the formation of the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries (DCMMI), a specialized non-profit trade and industry council to promote the interests of the marine and maritime industry in Dubai and the UAE. DCMMI represents a wide cross-section of the UAE’s marine and maritime industry such as Offshore & Engineering, Ship Repair & Maintenance, Shipbuilding & Conversion, and Rig building, Chandlery and Yacht Services. The Council was launched under the auspices of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

EMSA Updates Chemical-spill Advice Service

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) reminds of its rapid-response service providing expert advice on chemicals in maritime emergencies. In close cooperation with the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) and the Centre of Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution (Cedre), EMSA created the MAR-ICE Network in 2008. It offers remote product and incident- specific information and advice within 1 hour of the request and more detailed information shortly thereafter. Information provided within one hour includes safety data sheets, and relevant data from international codes & 
regulations; shortly after it provides additional information on product properties from a knowlegeable chemical company (if necessary).

Intertanko Says Simplify Inert Gas Regs

EU Ministers Fail To Agree on Shipbuilding Aid

The main item discussed at the European Council meeting of European industry ministers on December 5 was shipbuilding. Commission presented to the Industry Council the fourth report on the situation of world shipbuilding. Once more, the conclusions pointed to anti-competitive practices by South Korean shipyards: i.e. and guarantees, allowing them to offer ships at below-cost prices. strategy to improve the situation: a request for dispute settlement at the World Trade Organization and a Temporary Defensive Mechanism for the EU shipbuilding industry. The Commission has insisted that both elements of the proposed strategy would have to be implemented in combination. In the Council, however, there has been unanimous support for the first element but not for the second.

EU Agrees Strategy to Counter Korean Shipbuilding Practices

Today the Council of the EU approved the twin-track strategy proposed by the European Commission to counter unfair Korean practices in the shipbuilding sector. The EU has set a deadline of the end September to resolve the dispute amicably, failing which it will immediately launch procedures for a Panel against Korea in WTO and activate a temporary defensive mechanism (TDM) for European shipbuilding. The Commission will now hold a series of further negotiations with Korean authorities in an attempt to restore normal trading practices in this sector.
