ThyssenKrupp Develops New Lithium-Ion Batteries for Submarines

Raimon Strunck (53) has been appointed as MV WERFTEN's Chief Technology Officer (CTO), taking over the newly created role on October 1. His responsibilities include project management, design, planning as well as procurement and logistics. He is a member of the senior management and reports to CEO Peter Fetten.Strunck has 24 years of professional experience in the shipbuilding industry. After studying mechanical engineering at the University of Hanover, he held various positions in the areas of project management, sales and planning, working for different shipyards in Germany and abroad.

thyssenkrupp to Overhaul Indian Navy Submarine

German manufacturer thyssenkrupp has been awarded a 410 Crore contract with Mazagon Docks Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) to refit the Indian Navy’s Shishumar-class non-nuclear submarine, INS Shishumar. The Medium Refit and Life Certification (MRLC) contract for the submarine will commence in October this year and is expected to be completed by 2021. Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Awarded Service Order in Peru

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, a leading global system supplier for submarines and surface vessels, has received a service order worth around €40 million from the Peruvian naval shipyard SIMA. A key component of the order is the provision of consulting during the planning and realization of extensive modernization work on four HDW 209/1200 class submarines over a period of seven years. Among other things thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will perform engineering and technical services such as cutting and welding on the submarines and will make specialists available to provide local support. India Shortlists 5 Shipyards for $10.1 Bln Submarines Project

India's top government committee has selected five Indian shipyards to compete for an Rs 64,000-crore ($10.1 Bln) project to build high-tech submarines for the navy. The Indian Navy will soon invite tenders for building six conventional submarines after a high-level committee of the Defence Ministry submitted its report identifying shipyards capable of executing the project. “The Committee has visited all the shipyards in the country and has submitted its report recently. Germany Lobbies for India's Submarine Project

Germany is hopeful in bagging multi-billion-dollar Indian submarine project for building six conventional submarines, says a PTI report. German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner said the P-75(I) project was under discussion and that the matter also came up during German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen's visit here last month. He said that the talk did not specify the modalities of the deal on whether this should be Business-to-Business or Government-to -Government. According to Michael his minister said that it was a clear sign that there is potential for cooperation in this field (defence) and also in the field of submarines. German defence major TKMS is offering India its HDW Class 214 vessel and is in talks with leading shipyards in the country for a tie-up.

Germany Looking to Dock Submarine Deal with India

The German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is visiting India lobbying for the purchase of German Stealth Submarines and European military hardware, say local media. Sources said that Ursula  talked of Eurofighter and [HDW] submarines in her discussions with Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. India reportedly asked Germany what all it could offer if a direct deal was struck between the two countries on next-generation submarines. The move comes after India recently announced to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets from France. The German Shipbuilding Rebound

German shipbuilding has made a significant turnaround. The country’s shipbuilding industry has seen increases in the number of employees, orders and deliveries compared to 2013, according to the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM). The special shipbuilding sector drove this growth, as 20 of the 34 delivered new builds could be classified as high-quality special vessels or naval units. Although VSM announces its annual balance officially in May of each year, MR was able to obtain some early insights into the results.

India's First Indigenously Built Attack First Scorpene Submarine Launched Into Water

Indian Navy's first Scorpene class stealth submarine, Kalvari, on Monday was undocked at the Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. The diesel-electric vessel INS Kalvari was built by Mazagon Dock Limited in collaboration with France’s DCNS, and it will now undergo sea trials before being formally handed over to the Navy in September next year. The launch of the submarine was witnessed by Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral RK Dhowan and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, amongst others. After the launch of the Kalvari, Parrikar called for the staff and workers present at the docks to help make the Indian Navy a true 'Blue water Navy', and urged the defence public sector yards to double their production in the coming three years.

Powerful Submarines Join Israel’s Navy

The Israel Navy’s fourth submarine, the ISS Tanin (Crocodile), is expected to become fully operational in a few weeks and participate in naval operations. The nuclear-capable submarine boasts an array of sophisticated weaponry, as well as the latest in intelligence-gathering technology. It stands at a whopping 68 meters long, compared to 57.3 meters on average for other submarines. The navy’s fifth submarine, meanwhile, is expected to arrive this summer, and is now in the final stages of construction at the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) shipyards in Kiel, Germany. Germany Fights for Indian Submarine Contract

German giant ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the parent company of leading submarine builder HDW, will offer India its HDW Class 214 vessel, with an eye to huge project of Indian Navy for six submarines, reports PTI. TKMS is also in talks with leading shipyards in the country for a tie-up and promising a no-hold barred transfer of technology in line with the Narendra Modi government's 'Make in India' push. The Indian Defence Ministry is expected to issue the P-75I RFP for which TKMS is planning to offer the Type 214 submarine, which combines best-in-class underwater endurance and diving depth, Gurnad Sodhi, Managing Director of TKMS India) said. The HDW Class 214's "proven" fuel-cell based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system is the best available on the market, he said.

India Seeks Submarine Cooperation with Japan

The government of India has put forward a proposal of over Rs 50,000 crore ($6 billion) project to construct six stealth submarines in India. India is especially interested in acquiring the latest diesel- electric Soryu –class submarines, according to a report in the Times of India. The 4,200 tonne Soryu submarines, jointly manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, may not meet the Indian requirements but it may become a serious contender for the program called Project-75 India if Japan agrees to bid in the project. India is looking to manufacture these submarines in India under the newly launched ‘Make in India’ program.

Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, FSG, was founded in 1872 by a group of five local ship owners who previously had all their steamboats built in England as most German ship owners did in the 19th century. The first ship, the iron tall ship Doris Brodersen, was delivered to one of the founding partners in 1875. The cargo steamer Septima was commissioned a year later. In 1892 a floating dock, with a capacity of 2,300 tons has been built. At the turn of the year 1900, more than 2c000 employees worked at FSG.

Abu Dhabi MAR Kiel

As of September 1, 2011, the contracts for the acquisition of the former HDW Gaarden GmbH in Kiel have entered into force. Abu Dhabi MAR Kiel GmbH starts with 172 employees, the facilities, equipment and infrastructure of the former HDW Gaarden, working on first orders of its target markets offshore, mega yachts and construction of special vessels. Management Directors of this new company are Ms Susanne Wiegand and Mr Holger Kahl. The operations manager is Mr Christian Schmitt, who already held a leading position at HDW Gaarden’s surface vessel division for several years. Abu Dhabi MAR Kiel is currently building a 75 m yacht and an offshore transformer platform.

Gibdock Completes Work on Spirit of Adventure

Gibraltar-based Gibdock has recently completed a drydocking contract for UK-based Saga Holidays. Last month, the niche cruise operator docked the 9,570gt, 139m long Spirit of Adventure for a 10 day program of works, including steel repairs to the bulbous bow and a comprehensive external clean and repaint. PlanetSolar Solar Powered Ship

Imtech N.V. (technical services provider in Europe) is acting as technology partner of PlanetSolar, a solar energy powered ship. In 2011, PlanetSolar will set sail on a world cruise of approximately 50,000 km, with the aim of promoting solar energy and the use of environmentally-conscious alternative fuel for sailing. PlanetSolar is a high-tech 85 ton, 31 meters (101.7 ft) long and 15 meters (49.2 ft) wide catamaran, covered by 537 m2 of solar panels. The futuristic-looking ship is powered by two 10 kW electric motors.

Solar Powered Wavepiercer Cat

On March 31, 2010 the roof at the HDW Shipyard in Kiel, Germany slid open to reveal to the daylight the what is claimed to be the world’s largest solar powered vessel, a wavepiercer catamaran named Planet Solar. Appearing small against the back drop of the giant crane hoisting her to the water and the enormous ship building halls she was assembled in, the 101.7 ft long, 52.5 ft wide carbon fiber craft was launched a few hours later into the Kiel fjord, floating to her lines and looking more like a misplaced space ship than an ocean going yacht.

Atlas Elektronik Equips Korean Submarines

Atlas Elektronik has been awarded the largest single order in its company history. Bremen’s specialist for naval electronics will equip six submarines for Korea with combat systems of the type ISUS 90-61. The corresponding contract was signed with Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW), which belongs to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG. HDW will deliver six material packages to Korea for the construction of Class 214 submarines. The six ISUS systems from Atlas Elektronik form an important part of this order. In addition, the contract provides for extensive teamwork with the Korean industry. Atlas Elektronik is therefore also represented in the second batch of the Korean submarine programme. Italian Navy, More Subs with Siemens Fuel Cells

For the Italian navy, the Siemens Industry Solutions Division is equipping two new submarines of the U212A type with fuel cell modules for air-independent propulsion. The systems are ordered by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW). Delivery of the two submarines to the Italian navy is planned for 2015 and 2016. This will increase to 30 the number of submarines plying the seas worldwide with a Siemens fuel cell technology. The order has a volume of around $42.6m. The submarines are being built at the Italian Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A shipyard.

OTAL Adds Hamburg to West Africa Schedule

On 26 November 2009, the container ship CMA CGM Iguacu called at the Port of Hamburg as part of the expanded sailing schedule for the Nigeria Express liner service operated by the OT Africa Line (OTAL). Hamburg is included for the first time in this liner service, which links the ports of Dakar, Lagos-Apapa, Lagos-Tincan and Abidjan with the European continent. The CMA CGM Iguacu is scheduled to arrive in Lagos on 18 December 2009. The inclusion of the northern European continent only occurred in July this year. The CMA CGM Iguacu was built by the HDW shipyard in Kiel in 2006.
