President Joe Biden on Friday nominated Admiral Lisa Franchetti to lead the Navy, an historic step that would break a gender barrier in the U.S. military by making her the first woman to command the service and to become a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.The decision by Biden is a surprise. US Grants LNG Shipping Waiver for Puerto Rico after Hurricane

The Biden administration late on Sunday approved a waiver of U.S. shipping rules to address Puerto Rico's urgent need for liquefied natural gas (LNG) after Hurricane Fiona. US Approves Temporary Jones Act Waiver for Storm-hit Puerto Rico

The Biden administration on Wednesday approved a waiver of U.S. shipping rules to address Puerto Rico’s immediate energy and other essential needs in the wake of a devastating hurricane.Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said he approved "a temporary and targeted Jones Act Waiver" to ensure Puerto Ricans "have sufficient diesel to run generators needed for electricity and the functioning of critical facilities after Hurricane Fiona." Bollinger Delivers Final Bahrain-bound Fast Response Cutter

Bollinger Shipyards has delivered the USCGC Clarence Sutphin to the U.S. Coast Guard in Key West, Florida. This is the 170th vessel Bollinger has delivered to the U.S. Coast Guard over a 35-year period and the 47th Fast Response Cutter (FRC) delivered under the current program.The USCGC Clarence Sutphin is the final of six FRCs to be home-ported in Manama, Bahrain, which will replace the aging 110’ Island Class Patrol Boats, built by Bollinger Shipyards 30 years ago, supporting the Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA), the U.S.

OSM Inks Deal for VLCC Fleet

OSM Maritime has secured a contract for the full technical management of Hunter Group’s fleet of ECO design SMART VLCCs, currently under construction at DSME in Korea. Hunter Group has eight identical 336m vessels, set to be delivered towards the end of 2019 and into 2020. The Hunter vessels will be managed from OSM’s base in Arendal, Norway, which offers an established strength in specialist tanker services.“This is the beginning of a strong strategic alliance between two Norwegian headquartered companies with clear global ambitions,” comments Hunter Group CEO Erik A. S. Frydendal.

MV WERFTEN Takes On 90 New Trainees

In an official ceremony held in Wismar, MV WERFTEN welcomed 102 new recruits to the maritime industry. 90 apprentices in five different professions and 12 students taking sandwich degree courses were given a warm welcome by the company management, works councils and training supervisors, set against the impressive backdrop of the company’s shipbuilding hall. “Today is a very special day for us – we are taking on over 100 new recruits in one fell swoop and are setting course together for a successful career path over the coming years,” said Holger Tepper, COO of MV WERFTEN.

FEMCO Contracts Havyard for Ice Breaker Newbuild

Havyard has been commissioned to design and build an ice breaker vessel for Russian shipping company FEMCO, to be designed by Havyard Design & Solutions in Fosnavaag, Norway and is going to be constructed at Havyard Ship Technology`s shipyard in Leirvik in Sogn, Norway. The vessel will become newbuild no.122 and is due to be delivered in September 2015. The Russian shipping company has also secured an option for the construction of one further Havyard 843 Ice. Havyard has experience in constructing icebreakers for Russian shipowners.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding 1Q13 Net Profit Down 30%

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (YZJ) reported a 22% YoY fall in revenue to RMB2.9b and a 30% drop in net profit to RMB717.2m in 1Q13, accounting for 24% and 26% of our full year estimates, respectively, according to OCBC Investment Research. YZJ delivered only nine vessels in 1Q13, compared to 15  in 1Q12. OCBC noted though that gross profit margin from the shipyard operations remained healthy at 25.9% vs. 26.4% in 1Q12 and 24.1% in 4Q12. Still, the group entered eight new shipbuilding contracts totaling $237 million recently, bringing its current order book to $3.31 billion.

New opportunities in the Barents Sea

Holdings in 11 new production licences have been awarded to Statoil in the 21st licensing round on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS), which was announced by the government today, 15 April. The group received eight new operatorships, with four of these in the Barents Sea and four in the Norwegian Sea. “We are very pleased with the award of new acreage in the Barents and Norwegian Seas,” says Gro Gunleiksrud Haatvedt, senior vice president for exploration on the NCS. “I’d particularly highlight the operatorship/acreage in the Hoop area.

Dominguez and Dowd Awarded Thomas Crowley Trophies

Charlie Dominguez, vice president of sales and marketing, Latin America, for Crowley Maritime Corporation's liner services group in Jacksonville, and Jerry Dowd, vice president of labor relations in Seattle, were awarded 2006 Thomas Crowley trophies, the company's highest honor, at ceremonies Friday in Jacksonville. Created 20 years ago, the Thomas Crowley Trophy award honors employees with outstanding performance, whose dedication, leadership, initiative and productivity most clearly reflect those of the company's founder. The trophy, a limited edition, bronze sculpture depicting young Thomas Crowley as he ferried goods to and from ships on San Francisco Bay in the early 1890s, is a tribute to the founder of the company as well as the winners of the award.

China's Shipbuilding Strives for Top Spot

According to reports, China strives to become the world's largest shipbuilder. Last year China maintained its position as the world's third-biggest shipbuilder, a rank it has held for 12 consecutive years, as ship export volume surged 74 percent to $8.11b. Two leading domestic shipbuilders, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd, became world top-10 shipbuilders, joining a list that was before the sole domain of Japanese and South Korean companies. Chinese shipbuilders produced 14.52 million deadweight tons last year, nearly 20 percent of the world's total, compared to only 6 percent of the global market in 2000. Their profitability has also improved.

Transport Ministers Vow Crackdown on Terrorism, Piracy

Transportation ministers from 14 countries met in Tokyo (Jan. 12-13) and announced their unanimous commitment to greater international cooperation on transportation security and, in particular, to take all possible measures to thwart terrorism targeting public transport systems. Maritime security was high on the agenda of the first Ministerial Conference on International Transport Security and of particular focus were small cargo ships, fishing vessels, harbor tugs, and boats like the one used to launch the October 20, 2000 attack on the USS Cole in Yemen.

Cruise Ship To Host E8 Leaders

A luxury liner called "The European Vision" which will act as a floating hotel for leaders of the world's top industrialized nations next month docked in Genoa on Wednesday. With the exception of President George W. Bush and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, all Group of Eight (G8) leaders will have a berth on the 58,500 ton cruise liner during their July 20-22 summit. European Vision Leaves Vacationers Stranded in Genoa

Vacationers who booked a cruise on the luxury liner used by world leaders during last month's G8 summit were disappointed when the ship broke down at the weekend. European Vision had to stop in Genoa on Sunday to allow 1,500 passengers to disembark after an engine problem, a spokeswoman for Festival Cruises said. The 58,600-ton floating luxury resort, which includes Turkish baths, was home for two nights to world leaders such as French President Jacques Chirac and British Prime Minister Tony Blair during the Group of Eight summit last month. Passengers, who were on a seven-day cruise, were reimbursed and offered a 50 percent discount on future cruises with the company.
