ATSB Calls Out Inadequate Fire Safety Standards

Australia's national transport safety investigator is calling out inadequate international vessel fire safety standards and regulations in the wake of a 2018 bulk carrier fire that took five days to contain and extinguish.The 202 meter, Australian flagged self-unloading bulk carrier Iron Chieftain was discharging its cargo of dolomite at Port Kembla, New South Wales in the early hours of June 18, 2018 when friction, probably from a failed bearing, generated enough heat to ignite a rubber conveyor belt in the C-Loop internal cargo handling space.

Seaspan Selects Alfa Laval's Steam Solution

Seaspan Ship Management selected Alfa Laval to help resolve steam balance and redundancy issues connected to sulfur-compliant fuels. The solution – an integrated steam boiler plant comprising oil-fired steam production, waste heat recovery, advanced control and connectivity – will be implemented on eight Seaspan-owned large container ships.Prior to the IMO global sulfur cap’s entry into force, Seaspan Ship Management made the decision to work with sulfur-compliant fuels on its container vessels.

MES-S Delivers 66,000 Dwt Bulker Newbuild

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding (MES-S) has handed over a 66,000 dwt bulk carrier to Liberia-based Tomaros Navigation at its Tamano Shipyard.The newbuild is named M/V Tomaros."This is the 20th ship of our "neo66BC", the "wide beam shallow draft vessel" of our line-up "neo series"," said the shipbuilder.Featuring a length of 200 meters and a width of 36 meters, the 38,234 GT bulker flies the flag of the Bahamas.Tomaros has four cranes and five cargo holds, and keeps the superior usability of 56BC.The vessel is designed to have enough deadweight more than 66,000 metric tons and capacity more than 82,800 cubic meters for loading various cargos like coal…

Japanese shipbuilder MITSUI E & S SHIPBUILDING CO., LTD. (MES-S) said it has completed and delivered a 66,000 dwt bulk carrier M.V. Kedros at its Tamano Shipyard on June, 14, for KEDROS NAVIGATION SA, Liberia.The vessel is the 17th ship of the builder's wide beam neo66BC series.The vessel is equipped with four cranes and has five cargo holds with total capacity for more than 82,800 cubic meters for loading cargoes such as coal, ore, grain, as well as lengthy/heavy cargo like steel pipe and hot coil. MES Delivers 66,000 DWT Bulk Carrier

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) said it has completed and delivered a 66,000 dwt bulk carrier to owner Ostria Marine Co. The newbuild, M.V. Christina, was delivered at the builder's Tamano Works on March 15, 2018. The vessel has four cranes and five cargo holds, with more than 82,800 cubic meters cargo capacity. The ship’s main engine, a MITSUI-MAN B&W 7S50ME-B9.3 diesel engine, complies with MARPOL NOx restriction (Tier-II) for exhaust gas emissions. The ship has low sulfur fuel oil tanks, which are designed for operation in Emission Control Areas (ECA). Service Speed: abt.

Milos is the first vessel in a series of two Suezmax Crude Oil Tanker, built by SungDong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for Kyklades Maritime Corporation. The vessel is built under the survey of Lloyd’s Register and designed in accordance with IACS Common Structure Rule(CSR). The vessel features a double side skin and has a flush deck, bulbous bow, transom stern, open water type stern frame, semi-balanced rudder and single propeller driven by a slow speed diesel engine.

Keppel Secures Marine Projects worth S$120 mln

Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M)'s wholly owned subsidiary Keppel Shipyard Ltd (Keppel Shipyard) has secured four contracts worth a total of about S$120 million from repeat customers. Mr Michael Chia, Managing Director (Marine & Technology) of Keppel O&M, said, "We are pleased to secure new orders from long-time customers who continue to entrust their projects with us, whether it is for turret fabrication or vessel upgrades. The first contract that Keppel Shipyard secured is from BW Catcher Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of BW Offshore, for the installation and integration of topside modules for a newbuild Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.

Mitsui Delivers Bulker Ionic Unicorn

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has completed and delivered a 60,000 dwt type bulk carrier M.V. Ionic Unicorn (MES Hull No. 1905) at its Chiba Works on March 28, 2016 to Ionic Unicorn Inc., Marshall Islands. The vessel is the 11th ship of the builder’s neo60BC, the third Eco-Ship line up of its neo series. Designed for loading various cargos like coal, ore, grain, as well as lengthy/heavy cargo such as steel pipe and hot coil, the ship has four cranes and five cargo holds, and keeps with the usability of Mitsui 56, the builder said. The size of hatch opening is the largest for this type of vessel in terms of both length and width.

LNG-Powered, Electric Engine, Boxship Concept Design

French LNG containment specialist GTT, along with French containerline CMA CGM (and its subsidiary CMA Ships) and classification society DNV GL have released a technical and feasibility study for a new mega boxship dubbed the Piston Engine Room Free Efficient Containership (PERFECt), which could get rid of engine rooms all together. The concept vessel is LNG-fuelled, powered by a combined gas and steam turbine, and is electrically driven. Exploring this novel configuration resulted in the partners identifying and analyzing a propulsion concept that has the potential to offer a more efficient, more flexible and greener box ship design than current 20,000 TEU two-stroke diesel engine driven ultra large container vessels.

Phoenix Rising (MES Hull No. 1903) at its Chiba Works on July 1, 2015 to Saville Shipping Corporation, Liberia. Phoenix Rising is the second ship of the builder’s neo60BC, and the third Eco-Ship in the neo series lineup. The vessel features four cranes and five cargo holds, and keeps the superior usability of Mitsui 56, the shipbuilder said.

MES Delivers Bulk Carrier to Lepta Shipping

Alam Makmur (MES Hull No. 1866) at its Chiba Works on March 16, 2015 to Lepta Shipping Co., Ltd., Liberia. This is the eighth ship of MES’ neo56BC, the new generation eco-ship. According to the builder, this keeps the usability and reliability of Mitsui 56 which has seen more than 160 units delivered by MES. The vessel has four cranes and five cargo holds and is designed for loading various cargos like coal, ore, grain, as well as lengthy/heavy cargo such as steel pipe and hot coil.

Great Ships of 2014: Gas Star - 84,000 CBM LPG Carrier

Gas Star is the first of two 84,000 CBM LPG Carrier built by Hyundai Heavy Industries for KSS. The vessel measures 225 x 36.6 m, with a depth of 22.2 m and a design draft of 11.6 m. The ship is powered by a HYUNDAI-MAN B&W 6S60MC-C8.2 main engine with a NCR output of 11,340 kW at 89.5 rpm, enabling it to sail at a service speed of 16.8 knots with 15% sea margin. Electrical supply is derived from three generators of 1,140 kW, plus an emergency unit of 150 kW. It has a cargo space divided into four cargo holds.

Great Ships of 2013: Shuttle Tanker RIO 2016 for TEN

RIO 2016 is the first vessel in a series of two shuttle tanker in Brazilian water operation, designed by Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for Tsakos Energy Navigation Ltd., two companies with a long and good historic relationship. This vessel was chartered to Petroleo Brasileiro SA. The ship is built under the survey of DNV and designed in accordance with IACS common structure rule (CSR). The vessel has six pairs of cargo oil tanks, two slop tanks, fore and aft peak tanks, segregated water ballast tanks, fuel oil tanks and fresh water tanks.

ClassNK Amends Rules for Steel Ships

Classification society ClassNK has amended its rules and guidance for the survey and construction of steel ships. ClassNK said it regularly revises and amends its rules and guidance as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the safety of life and property at sea, reflecting the latest research and development results, feedback from damage investigations, requests from the industry as well as changes made to relevant international conventions, International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Unified Requirements and national regulations. Amongst the recent amendments was an update to the rules regarding the guidance for temperature gradient ESSO tests (tests for brittle crack arrest toughness) and double tension tests.

Great Ships of 2014: CSCL Globe - world’s largest containership

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) has built and delivered the world’s largest containership, the first of five 19,000 TEU containerships ordered from China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) in May 2013. The first containership in the series was named CSCL Globe, and it measures 1312.3 ft. (400 m) x 192.3 ft. (58.6 m) wide with a 100 ft. (30.5 m) depth.
