MARAD Announces $25 Million for Marine Highways

China Launches Energy Efficient VLCC

MOL Orders Japan's 1st LNG-Fueled Ferries

Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and its subsidiary Ferry Sunflower Limited have unveiled plans to construct Japan’s first two LNG-fueled ferries.Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will receive the order for the newbuild ferries that are designated to serve the Japanese market.Ferry Sunflower will charter the ferries after delivery and launch them on its Osaka-Beppu route from the end of 2022 through the first half of 2023, as replacements for vessels currently in service.The ferries will be equipped with high-performance dual fuel engines  and will provide passengers with comfortable accommodations and reliable schedules. NYK Demonstrates Support of Zero Emission Tokyo

In support of initiatives by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Bureau of Environment to make zero CO2 emissions in Tokyo, NYK has donated 14,027 tons of CO2 credits (excess reduction credits) acquired through energy conservation efforts in accordance with Tokyo’s Cap-and-Trade Program (total emission reduction obligation and emission trading scheme).In its medium-term management plan “Staying Ahead 2022 with Digitalization and Green” released in 2018, NYK announced the group’s intent to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives into management strategy to positively address the tough issues that challenge our society.

Shannon Insulation Solutions for Passenger Vessels

Shannon Enterprises of W.N.Y. a designer, and maker of reusable thermal and acoustic insulation, has put in place a custom-designed insulation system for Maid of the Mist Corp.'s two vessels, Maid of the Mist VI and Maid of the Mist VII, to improve engine efficiency, safety and acoustics on board each vessel.As part of a modernization program for the boats' lighting and climate controls, Maid of the Mist's engineering team installed a new generation set - including two, 38 kW Northern Lights marine generators - for both vessels.

Seven Major Ports Join Climate Action Program

John C. Stennis Best in the West

Stennis (CVN 74) as the recipient of the 2016 Battle "E" award for aircraft carriers home-ported in the Pacific, March 28. LA, Long Beach Ports Unveil Strategies to Cut GHG

Aggressively deploying zero and near-zero emission trucks and cargo-handling equipment and expanding programs that reduce ship emissions are among the core strategies the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are proposing for the next version of San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP). Proposals also focus on freight infrastructure investment, innovation and technology to improve supply chain efficiency, comprehensive energy planning, and increased advocacy for stricter emissions standards and government incentives to help pay for projects that advance testing and commercialization of zero and near-zero emission vehicles. The updated CAAP provides one of California’s first opportunities to implement the vision laid out in the State’s Sustainable Freight Action Plan.

Gazprom Earmarks RUB 10.8 bln for R&D

Gazprom Group continues earmarking considerable funds for financing research and development (R&D) activities. In 2014 a record-breaking amount in the whole Company history – RUB 10.82 billion – was devoted to these purposes. Gazprom is one of the leading Russian investors into innovations. ISO Certification for MOL Ship Management Company

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., today announced that its group ship management company for dry bulkers, Magsaysay MOL Ship Management, Inc. has acquired certifications from Nihon Kaiji Kyokai, for Energy Management Systems (ISO50001*1) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO14001*2) on June 18. MMSM’s certifications cover ship management of bulk carriers and other cargo ships, as well as office operations onshore. MOL Ship Management Co., Ltd. acquired the same certificates in July 2014, followed by MOL Ship Management (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and New Asian Shipping Company Ltd. With MMSM’s acquisition in this time, all 4 MOL Group ship management companies for dry bulkers have earned ISO50001 and ISO14001certification.

Ulstein Launches Discovery Series

Originating from an offshore design platform, Ulstein Group presents its Discovery Series concept, which includes three different vessels in the exploration, cruising and coastal patrolling categories. “70 percent of Earth’s surface is covered by oceans. 80 percent of the ocean is deeper than 3,000 meters. Norway alone administers an ocean area whose surface is six times greater than the mainland,” said Tore Ulstein, deputy CEO of Ulstein Group. The vast area of the unexplored has inspired ULSTEIN to come up with new concepts and developments, the company said.

NPCT1 to Develop New CT in Jakarta

PT. Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Persero) (“IPC”), Mitsui & Co, Ltd. (“Mitsui”), Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (“NYK Line”) and PSA International Pte Ltd (“PSA”) have agreed to jointly participate in the construction and operation of a new container terminal at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, Indonesia. This new terminal will be developed and operated by the newly established project company PT New Priok Container Terminal One (“NPCT1”). The Republic of Indonesia has in recent years experienced dramatic economic growth accompanied by a rapid increase in container traffic. Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok Port is the most important and largest port in Indonesia, handling the majority of Indonesia’s international container traffic.

MARAD Awards Grant for Green Tug Conversion

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has granted $450,000 to AEP River Operations of St. Louis, Missouri, to modify the Motor Vessel (M/V) Christopher Parsonage into a fuel-efficient hybrid vessel that conserves fuel and reduces emissions. The modification will provide the 180-foot tug boat, which operates along the lower Mississippi River, with a hybrid generator set attached to the main engine that will provide auxiliary power, which would normally be produced from the diesel generator.

International classification society Bureau Veritas has issued its annual group global Activity Report and its separate Marine and Offshore Business Review. The Bureau Veritas 2012 Activity Report provides a global picture of the group's performance and key achievements in 2012 and highlights the diversity of services delivered. The group revenues grew strongly in 2012 to Euro 3.9bn, up 16%. The group is active globally in eight major sectors: marine, industry, in-service inspection, construction, certification, commodities, consumer products and government services.

GasLog Ltd. Announces Delivery of 'Solaris'

GasLog Ltd. is pleased to announce the delivery of the fully owned LNG carrier Solaris, from Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. She today, commenced a medium-term charter to Shell Tankers Singapore (Private) Limited, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc. The vessel is a 155,000 cubic meter tri-fuel Diesel Electric (TFDE) LNG carrier that sets new standards for efficient performance and environmental protection. The vessel is classified to the ABS ENVIRO+ notation, signifying the highest level of environmental protection and energy conservation. Furthermore, the vessel is equipped with a new type of cargo compressors that will reduce the release of greenhouse gasses and offer enhanced cargo and heel management.

MACSEA Offers Low-Cost Ship Hull Monitoring

Hull and propeller performance degradation can cause a 15-20% loss in vessel efficiency, with a corresponding increase in fuel consumption and GHG emissions. Diligent hull condition monitoring and maintenance can negate these penalties and represents an effective, low-cost energy saving measure available to ship owners for immediate implementation. In responding to the market need to cut fuel costs, MACSEA is ramping up its Hull Medic hull condition monitoring service using its published methodology and automated, cloud-based data analytics process. The company is offering its hull condition monitoring analytical services for as low as $495 per month per ship for ten ships or more. Analysis can be done from data already collected or MACSEA can provide an automated data acquisition system.

China’s Growth Plans are Positive for Global Shipping

China’s aim of 7.5% GDP growth for 2014 is positive news for the shipping market – in particular, dry bulk, the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) said in a report published today. Despite being a little down on the 2013 GDP growth of 7.7%, BIMCO said the growth target of 7.5% set by China’s Premier Li Keqiang at his first appearance at China’s annual parliamentary session bodes well for shipping, trade and commodity demand in 2014. In 2013, Chinese seaborne imports surpassed the 2 billion metric tons, mark according to CRSL.
