Silver Ships Wins $8.2 Million Order for Navy and Coast Guard Boats

Aluminum workboat builder Silver Ships, Inc. said it was awarded an $8.2 million delivery order as a result of being awarded a firm-fixed-price indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) single award contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command for the construction and delivery of up to 110 Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Surface Support Craft (SSC) and U.S. Coast Guard Special Purpose Craft, Law Enforcement (SPC-LE) vessels, in addition to other accessories, parts and training.

Silver Ships, Inc. has announced its collaboration with industry vendors in the creation of an aluminum demonstration yacht tender. Silver Ships Hires Lobree as Federal Contracts Manager

Silver Ships, Inc. announced the hiring of Shawn Lobree, a recently retired U.S. Navy captain, as Federal Contracts Manager. Lobree has more than 25 years of military experience in maritime operations, human resources, information technology, shipbuilding and repair. His skillset will help give Silver Ships military customers a seamless contract and build process experience. In addition to his service in the Navy, Lobree’s career has included working as a maritime and defense consultant and assistant to a shipbuilding supervisor.

GoM shipyards are meeting the demand for right-sized, multi-mission boats. In the last decade, Gulf Coast shipyards have watched demand for multi-mission vessels grow from foreign governments and U.S. authorities. In particular, local counties and municipalities – pinched by shrinking budgets and expanding mission sets – began the march to leverage a single hull for more than one task. And, since these boats can serve military or civilian needs, the need for boatbuilders to quickly adapt a standard hull form to a particular requirement became a highly desired skill set.

New Multi-mission Patrol Boat for Montauk, NY

A new 38-foot multi-mission patrol boat for Montauk, N.Y. will be officially dedicated during a “splash down” ceremony on July 26. Delivered by aluminum boat builder Silver Ships, Inc., the vessel is a multi-agency, multi-mission vessel designed for emergency response and patrol within the Montauk Harbor. The vessel was garnered through the collaborative efforts of the Montauk Fire Department, the East Hampton Town Police Department, East Hampton Town Marine Patrol and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Silver Ships Delivers Fire/Rescue Boat

Silver Ships, Inc. has recently delivered a 34-foot custom designed and purpose-built all-welded aluminum fire/rescue boat to the Islip Fire District on Long Island, N.Y. The Islip Fire District’s area of responsibility includes The Great South Bay, communities on Fire Island, the Atlantic Ocean and Fire Island Inlet. This boat will also be made available to other fire districts on a mutual aid basis. The Board of Fire Commissioners of the Islip Fire District wanted an all-welded aluminum boat to ensure the safety and comfort of their crews when responding to, and on scene, of various emergency situations, including fire and rescue, emergency medical, diving operations and the supply of water to land-based units in order to aid in firefighting operations.

Silver Ships to Build 36 Navy Boats over Five Years

Silver Ships, Inc. was awarded an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract to provide the U.S. Navy with the follow on variant of the 11-meter Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Surface Support Craft (SSC) for a total of 36 boats over a five-year period. The 11-meter NSW SSC is an aluminum deep-vee hulled boat with a protective collar for open water utility operations. Crafts are used from inland bays and waterways to deep water over the horizon transits, in all operating conditions and weather. Open ocean diver and swimmer support, safety craft, medical transport, alongside vessel operations, combat craft and parachutist water airdrop training support, over-the-horizon training evolutions.

Silver Ships, Inc. said it has been awarded a firm-fixed price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity multiple award contract for the construction of High Speed Maneuverable Surface Targets (HSMSTs). The U.S. Navy maintains an inventory of HSMST’s to be utilized mainly for weapon system test and evaluation and fleet training exercises at nine seaborne target operating activities (ranges). Patrol And Combat Builders Fret About Budget Cuts But See Bright Spots. So far; so good. U.S. companies building patrol and combat craft aren’t happy about federal, state and city budget cuts but say they do see positive, demand-side factors. Much of their overseas business depends on the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program. The FMS, which transfers defense equipment and services to other nations, is retrenching now, however. Here at home, states and municipalities have fewer funds, grants and matching grants to pay for patrol vessels, builders say.

Foreign Demand For U.S. Military And Commercial Vessels Is Brisk; For Now. In the heavy shadow of possible sequestration-induced federal budget cuts, some U.S. companies are busy supplying vessels to overseas customers under the Navy’s Foreign Military Sales program and through private contracts to foreign government and firms. Demand for offshore oil vessels is strong. A big chunk of overseas business now is under the U.S. FMS, transferring defense equipment, services and training to other nations. Countries approved for the FMS pay for vessels themselves and/or with U.S. government help.

Silver Ships Delivers Patrol Boats to NC Sheriffs

Silver Ships, Inc. recently delivered two 27’ Patrol Boats to the New Hanover and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Departments. The vessels will be tasked with patrolling the Intracoastal Waterways, the Cape Fear River and coastal waters as well as the surrounding estuaries and barrier islands within the jurisdiction of the New Hanover & Brunswick Counties, North Carolina. The 27-foot, deep vee, vessels were designed and configured to meet the mission requirements for extended patrol, emergency response and fast pursuit when necessary.

The use of small craft by terrorist organizations and domestic terrorist cells is a worldwide threat as demonstrated by the bombing of the USNS COLE. The attack on Mumbai, India, in November of 2008, brought the danger to the forefront. Nations realized that to combat this asymmetrical small craft threat, a similar small craft defense – not replacing, but in parallel with traditional larger platforms – is required.

Silver Ships Delivers Navy Force Protection Medium

The Alabama based Silver Ships inc. built and delivered eight of the 36-ft RHIBs to the U.S. Navy in 2009-2010. The boats will be utilized around the globe for various force protection assignments. The vessel is equipped with twin Yamaha 225hp outboards and a 7 kW genset. The fully clad interior contained shock mitigating seats, a complete head and a versatile electronics package. A removable canopy provides shade to the rear deck and access doors on all four sides of the cabin allow freedom of movement for the crew.

USCG Awards Contracts for Four Test Boats

The Coast Guard on June 7 awarded four firm fixed-price production contracts to deliver the first test boats for the seven-meter Cutter Boat Over-The-Horizon-IV (CB-OTH-IV) project. The contracts were awarded to MetalCraft Marine U.S. (Clayton, NY), SAFE Boats International (Port Orchard, Wash.), Silver Ships, Inc. (Theodore, Ala.) and William E. Munson Company (Burlington, Wash). Each awardee will deliver one test boat to the Coast Guard for competitive evaluation beginning fall 2011. At the conclusion of the competition the Coast Guard will select one of the four test boats for additional production and begin operational test and evaluation activities.

FBM Babcock Wins U.S. Contract

The U.S. Army's Tank Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) awarded FBM Babcock Marine, a contract to commence the overhaul and modernization of its fleet of specialist Bridge Erection Boats (BEBs). The contract to upgrade the existing U.S. Army BEBs of Mk1 and Mk2 specification to a new BEB-M22 specification will be managed by FBM Babcock Marine from Southampton in the UK, in conjunction with Silver Ships Inc. of Theodore, Ala. The work to be performed under the modernization program will include condition assessments, structural and coating overhauls, replacement of obsolete equipment including new waterjets, marine diesel engines and control systems, and the development of a new Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package.

The first ever unassisted crossing of the North Atlantic just south of the arctic circle in a small, open, Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) has been completed by a team of dedicated adventurers led by Bear Grylls. Traveling from Nova Scotia to John O'Groats via a route which passed just south of the Arctic Circle, the expedition, which has raised around $80,000 for the UK young persons' charity, The Prince's Trust, has been completed a week ahead of schedule despite encountering icebergs and horrendous weather conditions. The expedition, which involved a five-man team sailing the open boat across 3,000 miles of the North Atlantic on a route that saw landfall in Halifax…
