U.K.-based safety and survival solutions provider Survitec on Wednesday said it has signed an intent to purchase Hansen Protection, a Norwegian provider of specialist survival suits and protective equipment.Ron Krisanda, Survitec's executive chairman, said, "Hansen Protection has a reputation for consistently delivering excellent products and services. The coming together of our two businesses, through a combination of our people, products, technology and wide-reaching footprint, will bring added value to our customers and reinforce Survitec’s position in the energy and marine sectors."

Costa Crociere S.p.A., placed a new order with Fincantieri S.p.A. for the construction of a new cruise ship. The new ship ordered today, with a gross tonnage of 132,500, 3,700 lower berths, 4,928 total Guests and 1,854 cabins, will be the largest Italian cruise ship and the 10th ship ordered from Fincantieri by Costa Cruises in the past 10 years. The new flagship in the Costa fleet and the Italian passenger fleet will be built at the Fincantieri shipyards in Marghera (Venice), for a total ship owner’s all-in cost of approximately €150,000 per lower berth. Delivery is planned for October 2014. The new ship will be an innovative evolution of the "Concordia-class” project, developed by integrating and improving the main features of the latest successful Costa ships entered into service.

FDGM, Inc., a U.S.-based, wholly owned subsidiary of Fincantieri of Italy, was selected to repower the United States Coast Guard’s 75-ft. WLR and WLIC class cutters with keel cooled Isotta Fraschini MotoriV1312T2 marine diesel engines. The V1312T2 will replace the current main propulsion plant for the Coast Guard cutters that work in conjunction with 130-ft. barges and primarily serve as aids to navigation. Isotta Fraschini has supplied numerous power plants to the Italian Coast Guard and for other patrol vessels and cutters in other countries. This is the first contract for FDGM/Isotta Fraschini products for the United States Coast Guard.

VT Halmatic said that Professor Bob Cripps, currently Engineering Manager at the RNLI, will be joining VT Halmatic as Technical Director as of May 9, 2005. Professor Cripps worked at Lloyds before moving to the RNLI and has extensive technical knowledge and experience of small craft and composite technology. The continuing challenge for technical excellence is essential to the VT Halmatic business plan. Professor Bob Cripps will lead the technical team supported by Dr Andrew Humphries, Marine Design Manager and Dr Robin Mableson, who heads up the Composite Technology Centre. The VT Composite Technology Centre (CTC) was formed in 2001 by the amalgamation of composite expertise from various divisions within the VT Group.
