A ferry ran aground with 118 passengers and seven crew-members aboard in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Saturday evening.Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York command center received a report that the 150-foot Seastreak ferry Commodore ran aground and was taking on water in Bushwick Inlet near the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, at approximately 4:17 p.m.The ferry, which runs routes between New York and New Jersey, lost power and steering and began drifting before striking ground, operator Seastreak said. On March 3, the Coast Guard published a notice that Martin Midstream Partners (MMP), a petrochemical transport and storage company, was seeking approval to modify terminal operations in Beaumont, Texas, along the Sabine-Neches Waterway. If approved, MMP would expand its liquefied hazardous gas (LHG) operations, both in volume and products. Instead of just handling ammonia the change would allow shipments of butane, propane, ethane, ethylene and propylene.Critically, MMP’s expansion would increase LHG vessel transit from 24 ships to as many as 350 per year.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) announced that two new Fast Response Cutters (FRCs) will be named in honor of Coast Guard reservists who served in the New York City Police Department and New York City Fire Department and lost their lives responding on 9/11.Adm. SAFE Boats International (SAFE), delivered boats 17, 18 and 19 to the marine division of the New York Fire Department during the month of August. Since 2006 SAFE has successfully built and delivered a variety of boats to FDNY ranging in size from a 27’ full cabin vessel with firefighting equipment all the way up to the 64’ “Bravest” with three separate fire pump stations that went into service in 2011.The three latest additions to the FDNY fleet are 33’ full cabin boats. They are the 11th, 12th and 13th boats of that size and configuration.

A 479-foot asphalt tanker was towed into New York Harbor after an engine room fire left the vessel disabled off the U.S. East Coast.Early on October 5, U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders in Woods Hole, Mass. received a report that the Hong Kong-flagged tanker Feng Huang AO loaded with asphalt and bound for New York Harbor suffered a fire in its engine room while transiting 57 miles southeast of Nantucket Island.The flames were extinguished using the ship’s installed carbon dioxide fire suppression system.

Coast Guard and partner agency crews responded to a ferry aground with 27 people aboard near Rockaway Inlet, New York, Wednesday evening. The Flyer, an 80-foot New York City Ferry became stuck on a sandbar after departing from the Rockaway terminal at 5:15 p.m., en route to Wall Street’s Pier 11 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Boatcrews from Coast Guard Station New York, and Station Sandy Hook arrived on scene with New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and New York City Police Department (NYPD) marine units. Due to shallow water, Coast Guard crews were unable to safely approach the ferry. An FDNY crew evacuated 23 passengers and a crewmember safely and placed them aboard one of their rescue boats. All passengers were transferred to the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Brooklyn, New York.

A marine power generation and climate control products manufacturer Northern Lights, Inc. (NLI) has  announced  completion of a 235kW Commercial Series generator set for the Fire Department of New York. The unit – M235C13.11NYFD – was built with a number of specifications unique to the requirements of metropolitan fire-fighting, including a nonstandard base pan, shutdown switches and USCG fuel lines plumbed to the base frame. The unit was completed to ABS and USCG standards and included a special “fire engine” red paint scheme.

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. launched the Impala Soledad, the first in a series of four inland river towboats for IWL River, Inc. This series of CT Marine designed 134 ft. ABS Classed Inland River Service towboats are Triple Screw with a Retractable Pilothouse and all are currently under construction at Eastern’s Allanton facility. The vessel series is scheduled for delivery starting in late 2016 into 2017. The launch on June 10, 2016 was hosted by Eastern’s Project Manager Joe Stark, a Navy veteran, followed by a decorated 25 year career with the FDNY as a Marine Engineer.

November 20, 2015 (New York) -- Today at Pier 16 in lower Manhattan the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) honored William M. Feehan by christening and commissioning of the new fireboat William M. Feehan. Captain Louis Guzzo led the ceremonies which included a number of dignitaries from in and around the FDNY. William M. Feehan was a FDNY firefighter lost in the September 11 World Trade Center attacks. Feehan, who at 71 was the oldest of 343 firefighters to pass away in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.

Construction of FDNY’s newest fireboat, William M. Feehan, has been completed by shipbuilder MetalCraft Marine Incorporated, and is slated for delivery and christening in the coming weeks. The name of the new boat honors veteran firefighter William Feehan, who at 71 was the oldest of 343 firefighters to pass away in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. The vessel’s nameplate, displayed prominently alongside the cabin, is milled from an I-beam lifted from the rubble of the World Trade Center.

Three U.S. Navy ships, two U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) cutters, and four U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) Yard Patrol boats have arrived in the New York Harbor to participate in the 2015 Fleet Week New York Parade of Ships. Participating ships include the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17), Arleigh Burke-class Aegis guided-missile destroyers USS Barry (DDG 52) and USS Stout (DDG 55), 703-class USNA Yard Patrol boats, and U.S. Coast Guard cutters Sturgeon Bay (WTGB 109) and Spencer (WMEC 905). A fire has broken out aboard the motor vessel Grey Shark at Homeport Pier in Staten Island, New York, Wednesday, The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported. The USCG, FDNY, NYPD and the ship’s owners are working together to extinguish the blaze that ignited Sunday aboard the 360-foot Panamanian-flagged roll-on/roll-off vessel. The fire has been contained by the onboard firefighting system but has continued to smolder since the initial ignition. Grey Shark departed New York for the Caribbean Sea on March 11 with 13 crewmembers aboard. On Saturday, one of the vessel’s two engines had ceased to operate, forcing the ship to return to New York for repairs. On Sunday, at approximately 4 p.m., the vessel experienced difficulty with its second engine, causing the fire to break out.

An historic U.S. Navy vessel that was originally deployed during Vietnam and later used to train U.S. helicopter pilots will temporarily dock at Pier 5 of Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) and for the first time be open for public tours. Free walk-up tours of the 'Baylander' are currently scheduled for weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning July 26 through Labor Day, inform the owners, the Trenk Family Foundation. In advance of construction of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Marina, the Baylander IX-514 will open for tours as part of a larger program designed to highlight the history of the ship and its extraordinary background, as well as facilitate the Marina's community boating program.

Monday, April 7, 2014, at the Sea Air Space Exposition at the Gaylord National Convention Center - National Harbor, MD, Brian D’Isernia, Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc’s president, was presented a NYC Firefighter Plate which honors the 343 NYC firefighters who sacrificed their lives during the 9/11 World Trade Center disaster. Presenting at Eastern’s booth was Jim Carney with the JCarney Company, a retired NYC Firefighter and Kevin Traver, Staff Vice President of Corporate Affairs for the Navy League of the United States.

Resolve Fire and Salvage signed an agreement with Fire Department New York (FDNY) last week, allowing the vast resources of the FDNY to be included in Resolve’s network of first responders that are available to vessel owners and operators, under the OPA90 Salvage & Marine Firefighting (SMFF) requirements. “FDNY has an excellent marine division that already responds first to marine incidents. This agreement simply formalizes FDNY’s role in the Vessel Response Plan (VRP), as a fellow marine firefighting responder, under the OPA90 SMFF regulations.

Coast Guard, partner agencies respond to ferry allision in Manhattan. The Coast Guard is responding to an allison that occurred at the Pier 11 ferry terminal in Manhattan, N.Y. Fifty-seven injuries have been reported after the ferry Seastreak allided with the pier at 8:45 a.m. Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station New York, along with FDNY and NYPD are responding to the scene. An investigation team from Coast Guard Sector New York is also responding. Drug and alcohol testing is being conducted in accordance with federal regulation.
