Russia's Shipping Trade Slides After Ukraine Invasion

Russia's shipping trade has plummeted since Moscow's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine and Western sanctions push many foreign companies to suspend sailings, adding further pressure on the country's economy, according to freight data.The world's biggest foreign container lines—including the top three MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM and others such as Hapag Lloyd—have temporarily suspended cargo shipments to and from Russia, while multiple companies including home furnishings firm IKEA have shut stores.Food companies Nestle

Maersk VC co-leads Funding Round in Egyptian Freight Logistics Start Up

Egyptian startup Trella, a digital platform connecting truckers with freight loads, has raised $42 million in equity and debt, including from the venture capital arm of shipping giant Maersk, its chief executive said.Founded three years ago in Cairo, Trella operates in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. It is one of several technology firms around the world seeking to upend traditional truck brokerages.Through Trella's online platform, shippers and truckers can directly book freight loads for transport.

Port of Gulfport Names Nass CEO

The Mississippi State Port Authority (MSPA) Board of Commissioners has named Jon Nass the new CEO and executive director of the Port of Gulfport, following a national search led by Tim McNamara, head of Odgers Berndtson’s Transportation and Infrastructure Practice in Washington, D.C. His tentative start date is June 1.“After nearly an eight-month process, the MSPA Commission is very pleased to announce we have selected a new executive director to lead the Port of Gulfport team,” said MSPA President E.J. Roberts.

The Connecticut Port Authority (CPA) approved the appointment of John Henshaw as its new executive director, effective September 8, 2020.Henshaw comes to the CPA after serving as the executive director of the Maine Port Authority for over 10 years and after serving as commissioner for the Board of Harbor Commissioners for the Port of Portland.He was selected for the position following an extensive search by the CPA board for a candidate with a specific set of skills and experience.

The coronavirus pandemic has shutdown much of the U.S. economy for months and even as parts of it reopen, the data is beginning to reveal the extent of the damage that has been done and a slow recovery is taking a tentative shape.The second estimate for gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter shows a 5% contraction from the previous quarter, and just 0.2% growth from the first quarter of 2019. With lockdown measures having only come into force in late March, the second quarter of the year will prove even more damaging for the U.S.

MSC Isabella, Largest Boxship to Call in Singapore Port

The 23,656 teu MSC Isabella became the largest containership to call the Port of Singapore when it berthed on 10 November 2019.The MSC’s Gülsün-Class of container vessels is currently the world’s largest series of container ships.To date, MSC Isabella is the biggest container ship to call at Singapore, the world’s top transshipment hub. Measuring around 400 meters long and 61 meters wide, the ship can carry up to 24 rows of containers, with a height of 13 tiers on deck. Its total capacity is 23,656 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). Its length exceeds that of the Eiffel Tower and it can transport the equivalent of about 384 million pairs of shoes.Singapore is the ship’s first port-of-call in Asia after sailing back from Europe. The ship was delivered to MSC in August 2019.

The first ever containerized cargo movement via Indo-Bangladesh protocol route and Brahmaputra (National Waterway -2) river will start from West Bengal's Haldia Today."In line with Government’s focus on improving connectivity to the North Eastern Region (NER), a landmark container cargo consignment will sail on inland waterways from Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) to the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) terminal at Pandu in Guwahati on 4 November, 2019," said a government release.Gopal Krishna, Secretary (Shipping) will flag off the inland vessel MV Maheshwari carrying 53 TEUs (containers) of petrochemicals, edible oil and beverage etc.

GEA Equips Cruise Ships with Transcritical CO2

German manufacturer GEA has developed a new, transcritical CO2 technology especially for use on seagoing vessels.GEA signed a contract last year with P&O Cruises, part of Carnival Corporation & PLC, the world's largest commercial cruise ship operator, for its new transcritical CO2 refrigeration technology.The environmentally friendly refrigeration technology has already been installed on board the Arcadia, a 2,000-passenger ship from P&O Cruises, where it provides energy-efficient refrigeration for all the ship's food and beverage refrigeration systems.Further orders for its transcritical CO2 refrigeration technology have now been received by GEA for two new cruise ships to be built in China and for a Dutch fishing trawler

DNV GL Names New Vice Chair

International accredited registrar and classification society DNV GL has announced that Jon Fredrik Baksaas has been appointed the Vice Chair of its Board of Directors.The Norway-headquartered classification body said in a press release that Baksaas started his working career in DNV in 1979 and worked in Norway and Japan until he left DNV in 1985.He went on to work in Stolt-Nielsen and Aker and topped his executive career with more than 25 years in Telenor – the last 13 as CEO and President until he stepped down in 2015.Baksaas has served 12 years as a member of the DNV Council. Varanasi Port Receives India's First Inland Cargo Vessel

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first multi-modal terminal built on the river Ganga in Varanasi (Kashi). He also received India's first container vessel that sailed from Kolkata on the newly-developed inland waterway.The event marked India’s first inland voyage by a container ship since it gained independence from Britain 70 years ago. Cruise Industry Embraces Transcritical CO2 Technology

International technology group GEA signed a contract for its new transcritical CO2 industrial refrigeration technology, with P&O Cruises, part of Carnival Corporation & PLC.The green refrigeration technology has already been installed on board P&O Cruises 2,000-passenger ship Arcadia, where it will deliver the energy-efficient cooling supply for all of the ship’s food and beverage refrigeration units. Carnival Plans $200 Mln Cruise Ship Makeover

Carnival Cruise Line will spend nearly $200 million on a major makeover of the 1999-built Carnival Triumph. The bow-to-stern renovation will add a number of new Carnival branded food, beverage and entertainment options, as well as updates to all staterooms.The nearly 20-year-old ship will enter drydock in Cadiz, Spain for a two-month-long refurbishment staring March 1, 2019.
