Bulk Carrier Operator and Chief Engineer Convicted for Dumping Offenses

Vessel operating company New Trade Ship Management S.A. and chief engineer Dennis Plasabas pleaded guilty in San Diego for maintaining false and incomplete records relating to the discharge of oily bilge water from the bulk carrier vessel Longshore.New Trade and Plasabas admitted that oily bilge water was illegally dumped from the Longshore directly into the ocean without being properly processed through required pollution prevention equipment. Oily bilge water typically contains oil contamination from the operation and cleaning of machinery on the vessel. The defendants also admitted that these illegal discharges were not recorded in the vessel’s oil record book as required by law.

Dutch MARIN Launches Defense Department

The Maritime Research Institute of the Netherlands (MARIN) will combine its defense-related expertize as of July 1 in a new Defense department. MARIN said the aim was to properly coordinate defense activities MARIN-wide with Dutch, NATO and EU Defence partners, to optimally contribute with MARIN's knowledge contributes to an effective navy of the future. RECSO Hosts First Global Oil Spill conference

The Regional Clean Sea Organization (RECSO), an oil industry co-operative organisation in the Middle East, has hosted First RECSO Enviro Spill Conference and Exhibition.In delivering the keynote speech at the opening ceremony, Abdulhakim A. OPT Wave Power System Reaches Milestone

US-owned renewable energy company Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) announced that the Company's PB3 PowerBuoy deployed in the Adriatic Sea has produced more than one MegaWatt-hour (MWh) cumulative energy to date. California Clean Sea Rules Soon Apply

The state of California has announced a no-discharge zone (NDZ) for passenger vessels of 300 grt or more having berths or overnight accommodations, and oceangoing vessels of 300 grt or more, with available holding tank capacity, or containing sewage generated while the vessel was outside of the marine waters of the state of California. Vessels without dedicated sewage holding tank(s) may enter Californian waters and discharge treated sewage from sewage treatment system as before. When NorShipping 2009 closed on June 12, the organized had claimed a record numbers of visitors; a total of 15,999, along with a total of 17,780 exhibitor representatives (1105 exhibitors from 52 countries). Nor-Shipping Clean Shipping Awards

Nor-Shipping organizers, in cooperation with Den Norske Veritas (DNV), announced the nominees for the first Clean Shipping Awards. Winners will be announced at Nor-Shipping 2009’s Opening Conference, scheduled for June 9. Working in cooperation with DNV, Nor-Shipping has established the Clean Shipping Awards, scheduled to be introduced at Nor-Shipping 2009’s Opening Conference. Selected by an independent jury, the Clean Shipping Awards cover three categories: Clean Sea, Clean Air, and Clean Innovation. In total, 60 companies were considered for the awards. Hydroxyl CleanSea Awarded IMO Certification

Lloyd’s Register of Shipping has awarded Hydroxyl CleanSea the certificate of type approval as a result of successful test program in accordance with International Maritime Organization Resolution MEPC2(VI). The tested Hydroxyl CleanSea system utilizes non-biological advanced oxidation technologies capable of treating black, bilge, galley, laundry and gray water. This approach reduces costs and maintance. CleanSea also incorporates a complete sludge management solution which does not require the discharge to the sea.

First Tanker Gets RINA Green Star

Italian classification society RINA has issued its Green Star environmental logo to the 35,000 dwt Shogun, in what is believed to be the first time a chemical/product tanker anywhere has achieved the voluntary Clean Air and Clean Sea standards which until now have been applied only to passenger ships. The Shogun, an IMO 11 chemical/products carrier, has just been delivered to Italian owner Mediterranea di Navigazione from Korea's Hyundai Mipo yard. It will enter service on charter to Italy's major energy group ENEL, which has taken particular interest in the advanced environmental and technical features of the vessel. RINA's Green Star logo has already been sought for several passenger ship newbuildings…

In particular, leading-edge environmental technology continues as a high priority in support of the Royal Caribbean’s “Save the Waves” initiatives. Hydroxyl’s CleanSea advanced wastewater purification systems will enable the Genesis Class vessels to reliably treat all biodegradable water streams generated onboard prior to safe discharge to the ocean. Cruise Ships to get Wastewater Upgrades

Wastewater treatment systems on four popular cruise ships will receive a $9.2 million upgrade intended to enhance compliance with marine discharge regulations, according to a release issued by Hydroxyl Systems Inc. Hydroxyl, a Victoria-based manufacturer, was recently awarded contracts from Miami-based Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to design and build four CleanSea environmental water process systems, said the report. The systems will combine Hydroxyl's bio-film carrier process for high-rate biodegradation with its dissolved air flotation equipment, both of which decrease space requirements and system lifecycle costs, Hydroxyl representatives said in the release.

Costa Mediterranea Awarded RINA Green Star

The Costa Mediterranea, which was delivered to Costa Crociere by Kvaerner Masa-Yards yesteday, has become the latest state-of-the-art cruise ship to be awarded the Green Star logo by Italian classification society RINA. The 85,700 gt newbuilding was awarded the Green Star notation, a dedicated environmental standard for shipping. The 2,114-passenger vessel, which is built to RINA class, is a sistership to the Costa Atlantica (delivered in 2000), which was the first ship ever awarded the RINA Green Star. Other sisterships are the Carnival Spirit (delivered 2001), Carnival Pride (2001), and Carnival Legend (2002). All meet RINA's high voluntary standards of construction and operation to maximize environmental preservation.

Carnival Legend

MS Carnival Legend, newbuilding no. 501, was delivered to Carnival Corporation at Kvaerner Masa-Yards' Helsinki shipyard this past August. Legend is the fourth cruise ship in a series of new Panamax-Max size cruise ships under construction for Carnival Corporation and operated by Carnival Cruise Lines and Costa Crociere. The first ship in the series, Costa Atlantica, was delivered in June 2000, and the sisterships Carnival Spirit and Carnival Pride in 2001. Measuring 960 ft. (292.5 m) with a maximum breadth of 127 ft. (38.8 m), a breadth of 106 ft. (32.2 m) and a draft of 25 ft. (7.8 m), Carnival Legend entered service August 21 with a three-day cruise from Harwich, U.K. to Amsterdam.

HYDROXYL Systems has been working closely with Royal Caribbean to facilitate their environmental mandate for wastewater treatment on the Vision of the Seas with a HYDROXYL CLEANSEA(R) system. Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas has been equipped with a HYDROXYL CLEANSEA(R) system. The CLEANSEA(R) system has been in successful operation during the 2002 Alaska season and in the process established a series of “firsts”.

Carnival Legend Awarded RINA Green Star

Legend, delivered from Kvaerner Masa yard August 14, 2002, to Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival Legend is also built to RINA class. The 2,124-passenger vessel is a sistership to the already delivered Costa Atlantica (2000), Carnival Spirit (2001), and Carnival Pride (2001). Two more vessels, the Costa Mediterranea (2003), and Carnival Miracle (2004) are due to follow. construction and operation to maximize environmental preservation. "We know that passengers want to visit environmentally sensitive areas, but they want to leave them as they found them, pristine," said Ugo Salerno, ceo of RINA, presenting the award to the ship's master at the delivery ceremony.
