Nimitz Award last night. The Navy League presented the award at the annual Sea-Air-Space Black Tie Reception and Banquet at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The Nimitz award honors an industry leader who has made a major contribution to the nation's maritime strength or enhanced national security.

Huntington Ingalls Industries say they recently donated $25,000 to Special Olympics of Mississippi. The check was presented at an event in Jackson and will help with travel expenses for Mississippi athletes and families to attend the Special Olympics USA Games, which will take place in June in New Jersey. "Ingalls Shipbuilding fully supports the Special Olympics, and this donation will go a long way in providing these Mississippi athletes and their family members what they need to be able to compete in the national games," said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Irwin F. Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has purchased property in Moss Point where the former 84 Lumber was located. The acquisition of the property closed on Jan. 31. “This purchase is another component of our strategy to consolidate facilities,” said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Irwin F. Edenzon. “The 84 Lumber property gives us a single, large footprint in relatively close proximity to our production activities and will allow us to receive, store and deploy material more efficiently. It also allows us to reduce the number of warehouse facilities we maintain at different locations around town. The 12.26-acre property will be used mainly for warehousing.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today that its Ingalls Shipbuilding division has awarded nearly $108,000 in grants for 25 different projects from schools and educational organizations in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The grants, which were requested by all of the organizations, will be used for projects associated with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This is the sixth year for Ingalls' STEM program. The company has awarded more than $500,000 for STEM-related projects during that period.

The U.S. Navy today awarded Huntington Ingalls Industries a $2.38 billion fixed-price-incentive contract for the detail design and construction of the multipurpose amphibious assault ship Tripoli (LHA 7). The ship will be built at the company's Ingalls Shipbuilding division. LHA 7 and LHA 6 are the first two ships in the new America class of amphibious assault ships. Tripoli will be 844 feet long and 106 feet wide and will displace 44,971 long tons. The fuel-efficient gas turbine propulsion system will drive the ships in excess of 20 knots.

Ingalls Shipbuilding authenticates the keel of U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter 'Hamilton' (WMSL 753) with sponsor's intitials welded in. Mrs. Linda Kapral Papp, wife of Adm. Robert J. Papp Jr., commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, is the ship's sponsor. Her initials were welded on a keel plate that will be part of the ship as long as it remains in the operational fleet. Ingalls has delivered three NSCs, the flagships of the Coast Guard's cutter fleet. They are designed to replace the 378‐foot Hamilton-class high-endurance cutters, which entered service during the 1960s.
