Dutra Dredging Company, Calif. was awarded a $19,869,500 firm-fixed-price contract for dredging in the Thimble Shoal Federal Navigation Channel and the Cape Henry Federal Navigation Channel, Norfolk Virginia. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk, Va., is the contracting activity. Austal USA LLC, Mobile, Ala., was awarded an $8,247,342 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-11-C-2301) on Nov. 27, 2013, to exercise an option for littoral combat ship (LCS) core class services. The company will assess engineering and production challenges as well as evaluate the cost and schedule risks from affordability efforts to reduce LCS acquisition and lifecycle costs. Work will be performed in Mobile, Ala. (60 percent), and Pittsfield, Mass.

DeJong & Lebet, Inc. announced that Norman N. DeJong passed away on November 7, 2013. Norman was 75 years old at the time of his passing. Norman was one of the founding partners of DeJong & Lebet, Inc., Naval Architects, in 1983 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Blokker, Noord Holland, the Netherlands, immigrating to the US after earning a BS in Naval Architecture at HTS Haarlem in 1959. He worked at Phillip F. Spaulding in Seattle, and NASSCO in San Diego before moving to Jacksonville, FL to work at Gibbs / Aerojet General in 1963.

This episode features attorney David Skeen of the firm Wright, Constable & Skeen, LLP in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Skeen has been practicing admiralty law for 39 years and has been an editor with the publication American Maritime Cases for most of that time. He is a member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States and has written and lectured on various aspects of maritime law. Mr. Skeen discusses the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in the case of Lozman v. City of Riviera Beach, Florida to hold that a houseboat previously considered a vessel under maritime law was not a vessel.

Delta T Systems announced the appointment of HVAC veteran Bob Miller to its staff. Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems announced the successful completion of the first Critical Item Test (CIT) required for development and fielding of the AN/WLD-1(V)1 Remote Minehunting System. AN/WLD-1(V)1 is being developed by Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Undersea Systems (NE&SS-Undersea Systems) in Syracuse and Riviera Beach, Fla., under a contract awarded in December, 1999 by the U.S. Navy. It will provide Arleigh Burke Class DDG-51 Flight IIA ships with its first-ever offboard mine reconnaissance capability. Key elements of AN/WLD-1(V)1 include a diesel-powered, semi-submersible Remote Minehunting Vehicle (RMV) with a deployable Variable Depth Sensor (VDS), line of sight and over-the-horizon real-time data links and a shipboard launch and recovery subsystem.

By R/C William E. Florida’s Palm Beach Sail & Power Squadron a unit of the United States Power Squadrons has honored sixteen student heroes from neighboring Riviera Beach Maritime Academy. A month before this event, these seafaring students were cruising toward Key West and the Dry Tortugas on a 10-day training mission aboard the S/V Denis Sullivan. Suddenly they became central figures in a highly publicized rescue involving three stranded fisherman adrift off the Florida Keys. High school sophomore T.J. Quails, with only ten minutes remaining on his watch, spotted signal flares in the evening sky. He immediately alerted his ship’s captain who notified the United States Coast Guard.

The Remote Minehunting System (RMS) successfully completed the test phase of a formal Operational Assessment designed to validate the system's mine hunting capabilities and operational availability on Aug. 21 at Lockheed Martin’s Riveria Beach, Fla., Test Facility. The RMS is one of several next-generation Naval mine countermeasure systems being developed by the Navy. The two Engineering Development Model (EDM) RMS systems will be formally accepted by the Navy in the very near future. The objective of the Operational Assessment was to demonstrate the last two items remaining in RMS development; system availability and crew training.

The U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin a $10.6 million contract modification to integrate a sensor array capable of three-dimensional (3D) obstacle detection and classification, VHF communication and 3D bathymetry into the Navy's Advanced Development Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (ADUUV). Under the contract modification, Lockheed Martin will provide engineering and manufacturing services to integrate the Littoral Precision Underwater Mapping Array (LPUMA) sensor into the ADUUV. LPUMA is produced by the Applied Research Laboratory in Austin, Texas. The first phase includes the design, fabrication and testing of a single ADUUV to support risk reduction for the Mission Reconfigurable UUV (MRUUV). Work will be performed in Riviera Beach, FL, and is expected to be completed by September 2007.

In a move it describes to strengthen its competitive advantage in design and integration of combat systems and sensors for maritime and related markets, Lockheed Martin is further integrating its naval electronics and surveillance systems units into a single business enterprise called Maritime Systems & Sensors (MS2). This restructured company, with more than 11,000 employees, has significant operations in Akron, Ohio; Archbald, Pa.; Baltimore, Md.; Eagan, Minn.; Manassas, Va.; Syracuse, N.Y.; Moorestown, N.J.; Clearwater and Riviera Beach, Fla., as well as satellite operations in more than 70 locations, including 22 overseas. Additionally, all the ships but Palm Beach Princess were charged with allowing gambling within Florida's territorial waters (which is prohibited less than three miles offshore). Additionally, all the ships but Monte Carlo were charged with unlawful sports bookmaking, allegedly taking bets on sporting events that would take place days later.
