The Port of Vancouver USA Board of Commissioners today voted 2-1 to hire interim CEO Julianna Marler as the port’s permanent CEO/Executive Director. Marler, who was appointed interim CEO by the board in May 2016, was one of three finalists for the position. The other two were Edward Galligan, current Executive Director of the Port of Olympia, and Arthur Scheunemann, former President and CEO of the Economic Development Council of Seattle and King County. “We had three highly qualified candidates, and that made this a hard decision,” said commission President Brian Wolfe. “This was a rigorous process,” said commission Vice President Eric LaBrant. “Julianna was stacked up against the best of the industry and she’s the most qualified candidate.

The Board of Harbor Commissioners last evening awarded 83 sponsorships totaling $359,795, capping off a record year of Port community sponsorships that highlight the Port of Long Beach’s role in international trade and dedication to social responsibility. With the latest sponsorships, the Port has given a total of $737,995 in the current fiscal year, which began last October, for 159 events representing a wide cross section of the city and causes such as the arts, environment, social justice and historic preservation. Harbor commissioners in August 2015 adopted new guidelines for the Port's community sponsorship program with goals of increasing participation, setting clear, user-friendly guidelines and enhancing the Port's focus on public service.

The Port of Portland Commission today welcomed new commissioners Alice Cuprill-Comas and Gary Young. Both were earlier nominated by Gov. Kate Brown and confirmed the Oregon State Senate. Cuprill-Comas of Portland is a transactional lawyer, and is currently legal counsel at Oregon Health & Science University. A member of the Oregon, Washington and Texas State bars, she was in private practice for more than 15 years, most recently as a partner at Ater, Wynne, LLC in Portland. Cuprill-Comas was named a Rising Star by Oregon Super Lawyers in 2010. Energy Company, an alternative fuels company with international operations headquartered in Seattle.

Former Port of New Orleans Cruise and Tourism Director Robert Jumonville received the 2015 American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Cruise Award yesterday during the AAPA biennial Cruise Seminar in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The AAPA cited Jumonville as being the vision behind the phenomenal growth of the Port of New Orleans’ cruise passenger business and its terminal and cruise-related visitor assets. Under Jumonville’s watch, the Port of New Orleans invested more than $75 million in cruise facilities and saw a 1,200-percent rise in passenger throughput. Revenue produced by the Cruise and Tourism Division increased more than 500 percent during his tenure. In 2014, the Port handled more than 1 million cruise passengers for the first time in its history.

Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, Harbor Commissioners and senior Harbor Department staff are traveling to several Asian countries, meeting with the Port of Long Beach’s key customers to retain and bring more business to Long Beach. The Long Beach officials are scheduled to meet with senior leadership of shipping lines based in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Japan to explain the Port’s competitive advantages for business, and to introduce the new Mayor, Harbor Commissioners and Chief Executive.

A proposal by the LA 2020 Commission to merge the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach – the two busiest container ports in the US – has been slated by Long Beach leaders for being “condescending and disrespectful”. The Commission made the recommendation in its A Time for Action report, along with 12 other recommendations on minimum wage and promoting regional tourism, and defended its proposal by saying it will “put the city on a path to fiscal stability and renew job creation”.

Bill Terry, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Port Freeport, announces the selection and appointment of Mr. Glenn Carlson as Executive Port Director and CEO. Chairman Terry noted that after several months of diligent searching and review of a number of excellent applicants, the Board reached a unanimous decision in the selection of the new Executive Port Director and Chief Executive Office for Port Freeport. Mr. Carlson has an extensive background in port operations and the transportation industry spanning over 37 years.

More than 200 turn out to for Port of Long Beach Executive Director Honored by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute. The Connie Award was presented by the Containerization and Intermodal Institute (CII) to Richard D. Steinke, who will retire this month as executive director of the Port of Long Beach. Mr. Steinke was honored for his leadership role in developing the Port into one of the world's largest container harbors. More than 200 people attended the industry-wide dinner event held on September 21, at the Renaissance Hotel.

In 2007, the Port of Houston Authority achieved its eighth consecutive year of record-breaking operating revenue. Year-end numbers project that the PHA increased operating revenue by $24 million, or 14 percent, over the previous year. “We could not have reached this achievement without the leadership of our dedicated port commissioners and port staff, who have remained committed to the business priorities that serve as the benchmark to the measurement of our success,” said PHA Executive Director H. The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) issued an order upholding the earlier decision of the administrative law judge (ALJ) in favor of the Board of Commissioners of Port of New Orleans in its dispute with a stevedoring company. The company had alleged that the board violated the Shipping Act of 1984 by unreasonably refusing to deal or negotiate with the company and by providing an unreasonable preference or advantage. The ALJ found that the board did not violate the law. The company filed exceptions to the decision. The Commission found that the company failed to provide any basis to warrant reversing the ALJ's initial finding. New Orleans Stevedoring Company v. Cruise travel from Broward County's Port Everglades increased by 13.5 percent this past fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2001 through Sept. 30, 2002), greatly contributing to the Port's overall $9.7 million increase in operating revenue. A record 3.5 million passengers sailed to and from Port Everglades in the past fiscal year representing a 12.9 percent increase over the previous year. Cruise revenue increased by 26 percent from $20.4 million in FY2001 to $25.6 million. The greatest increases came from multi-day cruises with the number of passengers increasing 24.9 percent from 2.0 million in FY2001 to 2.5 million in FY2002. Single-day cruises decreased by 7 percent from 1.1 million passengers in FY2001 to 1.0 million passengers in FY2002.
