LNG-fueled RoPax Ferry Completes Sea Trials

The first of two new 70-meter liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled RoPax ferries for Dutch operator Rederij Doeksen has completed sea trials in the Netherlands.The BMT-designed Willem Barentsz, and sister vessel Willem de Vlamingh, were built by Strategic Marine Shipyard in Vietnam while final outfitting and commissioning were completed by Rederij Doeksen.With an operating area within the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the main focus for Rederij Doeksen led by its managing director Paul Melles was on reducing the environmental impact of the vessel operation.

Long Beach's Cement Terminal Project Approved

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the Mitsubishi Cement Facility Modification Project this week, greenlighting the addition of 40,000 metric tons of additional storage capacity consisting of storage and loading silos on vacant Port property adjacent to Mitsubishi’s existing facility at the Port’s Pier F. The site will increase in size from 4.21 acres to 5.92 acres. The board’s approval was contingent on environmental measures and upgrades. The terminal receives imported cement and cement-like materials via bulk cargo ships. The product is stored in a warehouse or in silos. It is then loaded onto trucks and taken to local and regional concrete batch plants.

MIT Honors ABB as 'Disruptive Company' Innovator

MIT Technology Review’s 2013 list of 50 disruptive companies shows that innovation is far from dead. Friction Stir Fabrication Technology

In October, the Office of Naval Research hosted a Friction Stir Science & Technology Review in York, Pa. to discuss advancements in Friction Stir technologies. Among the attendees was Dr. Jeffrey Schultz Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Blacksburg’s high-tech engineering firm Schultz-Creehan, who reported the progress on his company’s development of Friction Stir Fabrication Technology. This Friction Stir Fabrication technology, invented by Schultz-Creehan, is a low-temperature friction-based coating method used to deposit coatings, including metal matrix composites, onto aluminum substrates at relatively low temperatures.
