The U.S. Coast Guard’s newest national security cutter Stone (WMSL 758) completed builder’s sea trials in the Gulf of Mexico. The new ship, built by Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Ingalls Shipbuilding division in Pascagoula, Miss., spent three days testing propulsion and auxiliary equipment, as well as various shipboard systems, Ingalls announced Monday.“Every successful sea trial is a major accomplishment for our shipbuilders, but this set proved to be a particularly substantial undertaking,” said Jay Boyd, Ingalls’ NSC program manager.

Group Will Develop Recommendations to Increase Trade Opportunities and Business Investment in Illinois. Governor Pat Quinn today convened the first meeting of the Illinois Export Advisory Council. As part of Governor Quinn’s commitment to strengthen the Illinois economy and create jobs, the group will work with the Governor’s office and recommend strategies to increase trade and business investment in Illinois. Governor Quinn announced the group as part of his growth strategy during his 2012 State of the State Address. “We have brought together some of the most successful business and economic leaders in the country with the single mission of advancing Illinois’ growth in the global economy,” Governor Quinn said.

On May 17, 2011, the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) hosts the Grand Reopening of its International Seafarers’ Center in Port Newark, NJ. SCI undertook a major renovation of the Center, completing construction late last year, to establish a first-rate facility for the global shipping industry working in the Port of New York and New Jersey, the East Coast’s largest port. “The welfare of international trade in the Port of New York and New Jersey hinges on this Center,” says the Rev. David M. Rider, President & Executive Director of SCI.

1934- The United States Line SS Washington came within inches of ramming the new Light Vessel No. 117 on the Nantucket Station.  The liner scraped the lightship’s side, shearing off davits, a lifeboat, antennas, etc.  Five months later the lightship was sunk by RMS Olympic when it rammed the lightship, killing seven of the lightship's crew. 1973- The U. S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut, announced that its cadets were served "meals for the first time by female civilian employees."  The Academy had "recently became the first of the nation’s service schools to contract their food services to a civilian company."  Previously, Coast Guard personnel had done the serving. On Friday January 30, 2009 at approximately 9:00 a.m. a new cruiseferry for FSG`s Canadian customer British Columbia Ferry Services, Inc. (BC Ferries), will leave the Flensburger shipyard and start her voyage from Germany to British Columbia, Canada. The new 498 ft ship will accommodate 600 passengers and 130 vehicles. Among its many features, the Northern Expedition will offer 55 modern cabins for customers and an expanded range of food services and other amenities to delight local residents and tourists alike. The transfer voyage will take about 45 days.

The Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania has granted a request for an expedited hearing requested by major maritime interests in the Delaware River area in a lawsuit questioning the jurisdiction of the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority. The hearing, scheduled presently for October 3, 2007, is based on a complaint filed by the International Longshoremen's Association District Council of Philadelphia and Wilmington (DE), the Philadelphia Marine Trade Association (PMTA) and the Maritime Stakeholders Group (MSG). The three organizations, which collectively represent more than 300 maritime-related entities, claim that the PRPA is overstepping its jurisdiction by preparing to convey maritime land to a non-maritime related use.
