IMO to Review GHG Strategy and More at MEPC 80

The IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) - 80th session will meet at IMO Headquarters in London from July 3-7, and amongst key agenda items, the MEPC 80 session is expected to adopt an upgraded IMO greenhouse gas strategy.The revised IMO GHG Strategy will contain concrete greenhouse gas reduction targets for the sector and is expected to outline a range of technical and economic measures. Grimaldi Group Orders Six RoRo Ships

The Grimaldi Group said it signed an order contract worth more than $500 million for the construction of six new ro/ro multipurpose vessels at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd (Ulsan) in South Korea.With a length of 250 meters, a beam of 38 meters and a deadweight of 45,684 tonnes, the six newbuilds  are expected to be delivered for Grimaldi's Neapolitan Group between the first months of 2023 and the end of 2024. The vessels will replace older 25-year-old-plus tonnage and will be deployed between North Europe and West Africa…

Italian Navy Launches Offshore Patrol Ship

GE Marine's LM2500+G4 gas turbine will  power the Italian Navy’s new Paolo Thaon di Revel Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (PPA) a hybrid-electric, multipurpose offshore patrol ship that was launched in mid-June and will be delivered in 2021.Being built at Fincantieri Shipyard in Muggiano – La Spezia, Italy, the PPA patrol ship will serve multiple functions from patrol with sea rescue capacity to civil protection operations. It is 133 meters long and can carry 90 crew members with additional accommodations for up to 171 members.

ACL Christens Its New Vessel Atlantic Sun

Atlantic Container Line (ACL) held a christening ceremony for its new G4 vessel, the Atlantic Sun, on Wednesday, at FAPS Port Newark Auto Marine Terminal at the Port of New York & New Jersey. The ACL G4 vessels are the first of their kind and the largest multipurpose RoRo/Containerships ever built. They incorporate an innovative design that increases capacity without significantly changing the dimensions of the vessel. The G4s are bigger, greener and more efficient than their predecessors.

Grimaldi Group: Alfa Laval PureSOx for Five ACL Vessels

The Grimaldi Group signed an agreement for PureSOx connectivity services on five vessels operated by Atlantic Container Line (ACL). The services will provide not only compliance monitoring, but also valuable data for use in optimizing PureSOx operation. The Grimaldi Group has been using PureSOx for exhaust gas cleaning aboard its vessels since 2014. ACL, a Grimaldi Group company specialized in transatlantic cargo shipping, has hybrid PureSOx scrubber systems installed on all five of its Generation 4 (G4) vessels: Atlantic Sail, Atlantic Sea, Atlantic Sky, Atlantic Star and Atlantic Sun.

GE Powers Canada’s New Combat Ships

GE Aviation’s marine gas turbines are the ideal solution for the Royal Canadian Navy’s next generation surface combatant program, GE Marine said Thursday at the CANSEC 2018 trade exhibition.“GE’s LM2500 family of engines are used by the Royal Canadian Navy and 34 other navies worldwide, setting the benchmark for reliability. The global fleet of GE gas turbines has logged over 15 million operating hours in the marine environment and another 90 million in industrial applications,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE’s Vice President, Marine Operations, Cincinnati, Ohio.

GE Powers New Italian Frigate

Federico Martinengo, the seventh multipurpose FREMM frigate recently delivered to the Italian Navy by shipyard Fincantieri, like all 10 ships in the new Carlos Bergamini-class FREMM frigate program, features the power dense GE LM2500+G4 gas turbine in a COmbined Diesel eLectric And Gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion system.In 2013, Fincantieri delivered the first Italian FREMM, Carlo Bergamini. In addition to the Italian FREMM frigates, DCNS shipyard in Lorient, France, is well underway having delivered six FREMM frigates in a 10-ship program.

GE, DSIC Unveil Plan for LNG Carrier Power Conversions

GE’s Marine Solutions and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd. (DSIC) completed a preliminary design for the conversion of a steam turbine powered LNG Carrier (LNGC) to a gas turbine-based propulsion system. The study aims at steam powered LNGCs that offer low fuel efficiency but are not ready to be retired from service. RJE to Build GE Gas Turbine Modules for Australian Navy Frigates

GE’s Marine Solutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with RJE Global, Morphettville, South Australia, whereby RJE will assemble GE LM2500 gas turbine modules and manufacture a number of components for this engine in support of the Royal Australian Navy’s new SEA 5000 frigate program. The MOU was signed by both companies recently at RJE’s facility in Adelaide. The nine-ship SEA 5000 Future Frigate Program will replace the aging Anzac class frigates. GE’s LM2500 gas turbines are operational on two of the short-listed qualified ship designs -- Fincantieri’s FREMM and Navantia’s F100.

GE Gas Turbines Power Japanese Destroyer

GE's Marine Solutions reports that the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned its second Izumo-class helicopter-carrying destroyer. The new JS Kaga (DDH 184) is powered by four GE LM2500 marine gas turbines, and was commissioned at the Japan Marine United Corporation shipyard in Yokohama on March 22, 2017. First-in-class JS Izumo (DDH 183) and JS Kaga are the largest surface combatants in the JMSDF fleet. Both feature a powerful and reliable combined diesel and LM2500 gas turbine propulsion system, with the gas turbines using GE’s integrated electronic controls.

Hamburg Süd Reports Sustainably

Hamburg Süd is the first container shipping lines to publish its Sustainability Report in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Standard Disclosures (Core). Entitled “Setting standards and acting sustainably”, the 84-page report sets out the key topics in the areas of environmental, social and economic responsibility for the 2014 and 2015 reporting period. “With the new Sustainability Report, Hamburg Süd is once again demonstrating that sustainable conduct is an indispensable part of its corporate philosophy. Atlantic Sail Hits the Water

Atlantic Container Line (ACL) took delivery of Atlantic Sail last week, the second of five new conro (container and roll-on/roll-off) - new G4 generation vessels - ships the company is building as part of its fleet renewal process. The Atlantic Sail will sail from China early in the week of April 4th and will take its place in the company’s transatlantic schedule in early May. The remaining three G4 vessels will all be delivered during this year. The ACL G4 vessels are the first of their kind and the largest multipurpose RORO/Containerships ever built. CMA-CGM and Cosco Alliance in the Offing?

The newly-formed shipping giant China Cosco Shipping Corporation and CMA CGM met recently in Shanghai to discuss the possibility of a new French-Asian alliance, say local Chinese media. According to sources,  the alliance would also include Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). If it happens it would be shake-up the present structure of maritime alliances of container companies. China Cosco Shipping Corporation - which is made up of Cosco and CSCL - is likely to own 832 ships including containers, dry-bulk vessels and tankers amounting to almost $22 billion. Together with NOL and its subsidiary APL, CMA-CGM remains in third place, but would rise to 2.3 million TEUs of total capacity, behind Maersk and MSC.

GE Gas Turbine to Power Italian Navy Patrol Ship

GE’s Marine Solutions announced it will provide a LM2500+G4 gas turbine that will power the Italian Navy’s new Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura (PPA) multipurpose offshore patrol ship. The PPA’s hybrid electric propulsion system also will use GE’s shock-proof MV3000 drives and a GE-designed electrical network of motors as part of the propulsion system. Avio Aero, a GE Aviation business headquartered in Italy, will have the design responsibility for the gas turbine package. The PPA ship will be built by Fincantieri at its Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano.

Naming of UASC's 'Barzan' at HSHI, S. Korea

Barzan, the first in a series of six 18,800 TEU container vessels ordered by UASC, was recently named at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) in Mokpo, South Korea. The vessel is the first to receive classification society DNV GL’s new GAS READY notation. INTERSCHALT VDR Earns CCS Certification

INTERSCHALT maritime systems AG, the provider of maritime software, services and systems for navigation and communications systems (NavCom) and manufacturer of Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) systems, announced that its new generation VDR G4[e] has been type approved by the China Classification Society (CCS), effective July 1, 2015. By granting the type approval, CCS certifies that the VDR G4[e] complies with the international regulations and performance standards of IMO Resolution MSC.333(90). The VDR G4[e] has also been approved by the German federal authority BSH.

Interschalt Expands Network in China

Interschalt  maritime systems AG, a provider of maritime software and services for navigation and communication equipment (NavCom), as well as the manufacturer of the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR 4G[e] and S-VDR), has expanded its Asian service network by designating Seven Seas Electronic Co. Ltd as its preferred service partner in China. Seven Seas Electronic Co. Ltd will be responsible for installing, commissioning, retrofitting and maintaining VDR G4[e], S-VDR, and MER-(s)-VDR systems, and for carrying out the annual VDR performance tests (APT) in line with IMO regulations. On behalf of Interschalt , the company will also take over a wide range of maintenance work on navigation and communication equipment for the Chinese market.
