GE Marine and GE Oil & Gas announced that the marine module package design for its LM6000PG aeroderivative gas turbine has been certified by Lloyd’s Register and RINA Services (RINA). GE LM500s to Power Korea Navy Ships

GE Marine reports its LM500 aeroderivative gas turbine has been selected to power the Republic of Korea Navy’s PKX-B patrol boat program. The LM500 gas turbines will be manufactured in-country by Samsung Techwin at its Changwon, Korea, facility. The potential gas turbine propulsion system value over the life of the 34-ship PKX-B program is approximately $400 million. The program will be conducted in two phases. The first phase is for 16 shipsets. After completion, Phase II will proceed according to ROK government procedures.

GE to Provide Equipment, Services for Statoil’s Gina Krog Platform

GE Oil & Gas was awarded a contract to provide Korean shipbuilding firm Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) with turbomachinery equipment and services for a new oil and gas production platform being built to support the production activities of Statoil Petroleum AS and its partners Total S.A. and Det Norske in the Gina Krog field in the Norwegian North Sea. Gina Krog (previously known as Dagny) is located 30 kilometers (km) northwest of the Sleipner field and approximately 250 km southwest of Stavanger, Norway. The development of Gina Krog will be among Statoil's major new developments with an estimated 225 million barrels of oil and gas. For the project, GE is supplying DSME with an integrated topside turbomachinery solution featuring products from several GE businesses.

GE Gas Turbines on Euro Frigate

GE Marine reports that the first frigate Aquitaine of the Italian-French FREMM program was recently launched at DCNS’ shipyard in Lorient, France. The ship is powered by the GE LM2500+G4 gas turbine-based propulsion system. Aquitaine sea trials were successfully completed in May 2011. The United States Navy commissioned its new LHD 8 ship USS Makin Island on October 24, 2009 in San Diego, California. GE Gas Turbine Powers First National Security Cutter

Bertholf is the first of class for the U.S. Coast Guard under its Deepwater Program.

GE Marine announces that its LM2500 marine aeroderivative gas turbine now powers the United States Coast Guard’s first National Security Cutter, Bertholf. The cutter recently completed extensive sea trials and was delivered to the U.S. Coast Guard on May 8 by shipbuilder Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB).The cutter’s propulsion system consists of one LM2500 gas turbine in a COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) arrangement with two MTU 20V1163 diesel engines. The propulsion system was provided by MTU Detroit Diesel Corporation.

GE to Supply FREMM Vessel

GE Marine will supply Avio, Torino, Italy, with a third GE LM2500+G4 aeroderivative gas turbine for the European Multi-Mission Frigates (FREMM) program. The engine will be the basis for the COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion module that will power the French Navy’s second FREMM ship. The French and Italian Navies are jointly developing the FREMM program, and combined, the navies are slated to build a total of 27 next-generation frigates. GE has already contracted with Avio to supply two LM2500+G4 gas turbines for the initial two FREMM vessels.

The world’s largest transatlantic liner, the Queen Mary 2, set sail on its maiden voyage powered by two GE LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbine-generator sets and four diesel generator-sets. The new flagship of the British merchant fleet, owned by Cunard Line, will take 14 days to sail from Southampton in the United Kingdom to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A special highlight of Queen Mary 2’s inaugural schedule will be her maiden eastbound crossing from New York on April 25 as both Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 sail in tandem.

GE Focuses on Optimization For Cruise Ships

The natural progression is underway from installation, design and commissioning of GE gas turbines aboard cruise ships to cooperation with users to further enhance operations. GE is focusing its efforts on optimizing maintenance and improved system reliability, the company reported today at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention. "The use of gas turbines to power cruise ships was long in coming, so it seems fitting that the four years since the world's first gas turbine-powered cruise ship set out on its maiden voyage have gone by quickly," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine. Celebrity Cruises' Millennium is the first cruise ship to use gas turbines.

Propulsion: Gas Turbines: Keeping Fresh With Innovation

Keeping pace with the fast-evolving maritime industry is a mantra at GE Marine with its LM aeroderivative gas turbine line. Going forward, GE Marine will see its LM gas turbines applied in several novel and state-of-the-art military and commercial marine projects. One military application in particular — the Office of Naval Research's (ONR) new X-Craft (pictured left) high-speed catamaran — will use two LM2500 in a COmbined Diesel Or Gas turbine (CODOG) configuration with two MTU 16V 595 TE90 diesel engines with a corresponding gearbox and four waterjets. The propulsion system will enable the vessel to reach speeds of 50 knots. According to GE, the X-Craft will set the stage for the U.S. Navy's next generation of warship, the Littoral Combat Ship.

GE Gets USN Certification for LM2500+

GE Transportation's marine business received United States Navy certification for its LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbine. The LM2500+ has been certified by the U.S. Navy for 35,000 brake horsepower (bhp) for mechanical drive applications. Gas Turbine v. Diesel Debate Heats Up With Delivery of New Millennium

GE Begins Testing for ABS Certification for LM6000 Gas Turbine

GE Transportation's marine gas turbine business has launched a program to obtain American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification, to the Steel Vessel and the new Naval Vessel Rules, for its LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine. GE plans to certify the LM6000 at a power level greater than 36 megawatts based on United States Navy standard day conditions (100oF). "The LM6000 has been operating for more than 10 years in diverse marine environments. In fact, LM6000s have accumulated more than 290,000 hours on floating, production, storage and off-loading vessels, and aboard commercial power barges and offshore platforms," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Transportation's marine business, Evendale, Ohio.

GE signed a contract to provide MODEC with three LM2500+G4 aeroderivative gas turbine generators for use on a floating production storage and off-loading (FPSO) vessel in Brazil’s Campos Basin. Using the standardized package configuration of its commercial marine units, GE’s LM2500+G4 gas turbine generators offer substantial weight and space savings as compared to other similar units in the industry. LM6000 Gas Turbine Passes Test

GE Transportation announced that an LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine recently completed the 500-hour power generation phase of endurance testing towards American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification. GE is seeking ABS certification to the Steel Vessel and the new Naval Vessel Rules for its LM6000. GE plans to certify the LM6000 at a power level greater than 36 megawatts based on United States Navy standard day conditions (100oF). The 500-hour mechanical drive portion of testing will follow shortly, with GE on schedule to receive ABS certification in 2006. The LM6000 being used in the ABS qualification test is a standard production LM6000PC liquid fuel engine, with no modifications required to meet ABS Naval Vessel Rules requirements.

GE To Supply Gas Turbines for Royal Norwegian Navy

GE Marine Engines reported that its LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine will power five new Royal Norwegian Navy F310-class frigates. IZAR Construcciones Navales, S.A., will build the frigates at its naval shipyard in Ferrol, Spain. This is the first naval Combined Diesel And Gas Turbine (CODAG) configuration to be installed by IZAR, and the Royal Norwegian Navy is only the second international navy to adopt this arrangement. The Germany Navy uses an LM2500-based CODAG configuration on its new F124-class frigates. The CODAG configuration on each F310-class frigate will consist of one GE LM2500 gas turbine, rated at 21.5 megawatts/28,832 shaft horsepower, combined with the two diesel engines for a total propulsion system rating of 30.5 megawatts.

GE Marine Engines To Outfit Queen Mary 2 With Gas Turbine Power

GE Marine Engines announced that its LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbine has been selected for use aboard Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 transatlantic liner. Upon completion in 2003, this will be the world's largest passenger vessel. "We faced strong competition for the Cunard order, but the LM2500+ prevailed with its unmatched experience in various marine applications," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine Engines. "We are very excited to be an integral part of this important program," Matson added. The liner will use two GE LM2500+ gas turbine generator sets in a Combined Diesel and Gas Turbine (CODAG) configuration with four diesel engines. Top speed is expected to reach 30 knots.

Gas Turbine Advances

Not too long ago, the gas turbine for commercial maritime use was relegated as an exotic luxury by many, as the use was centered mainly on high performance naval vessel applications. But a metamorphosis of sorts has occurred in recent years, and a the market potential for gas turbine usage on commercial boats and ships is rapidly expanding. Specifically, the evolution of very large, very fast cargo, automotive and passenger ferries has resulted in the increased specification of gas turbine propulsion packages. Also, the increased focus on the environment and tighter scrutiny on exhaust emissions has led to new orders for gas turbines for new users, such as the cruise ship market.
