Sizing Up the Market, Scaling Solutions to Size

In October of 2014, news of Oceaneering’s purchase of GE Transportation’s newest marine engine offering was making waves. These engines – ones which meet EPA Tier 4i and IMO Tier III Emissions standards – without the need for a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) exhaust gas after-treatment, had workboat operators everywhere looking at new possibilities. Before that, Harvey Gulf International Marine also entered into a contract to construct a new Multipurpose Field Support Vessel (MPFSV) at Eastern Shipbuilding, this one also powered by GE’s Tier 4 compliant, EGR main engines. That’s important because Harvey Gulf, the recognized North American leader in rolling out LNG and dual fuel propulsion vessels, in this case, selected a pure diesel engine.

GE Diesel Engines and Gearboxes for Reinauer ATB

Reinauer Transportation Companies, LLC, purchased two GE U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 certified marine diesel engines and two Lufkin Marine Propulsion Gearboxes for its new articulated tug and barge (ATB), GE Marine announced. The ATB will be built by Senesco Marine and is scheduled to be commissioned in early 2016 to transport petroleum products in U.S. and International coastal waters. Local engine support will be provided by GE Marine’s Distributor, Cummins MidSouth.

GE’s First IMO Tier III Marine Diesel Engines Ordered

Bastø Fosen has placed an order for eight of GE Marine’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III compliant marine diesel engines for new and repowered vessels. The order, which includes six eight-cylinder in-line engines for three new ferries and two 16-cylinder V engines to repower two existing vessels, Bastø I and Bastø II, will see Bastø Fosen be among the first customers in Northern Europe to operate GE’s diesel engines that meet IMO Tier III emissions standards without Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment or urea injection.

ExxonMobil Offers New Zinc-Free Marine Engine Oil

ExxonMobil introduced Mobilgard 410 NC, touted by the oil company as a zinc-free high-performance oil that offers marine operators an improvement in piston cleanliness (up to 20%), a reduction in liner wear (up to 50%), and a significant enhancement in bearing protection.

Marine fuel and lubricant providers increasingly are playing a pivotal role in helping ship and boat owners to reduce emissions and improve performance. To this end, ExxonMobil introduced Mobilgard 410 NC, touted by the oil company as a zinc-free high-performance oil that offers marine operators an improvement in piston cleanliness (up to 20%), a reduction in liner wear (up to 50%), and a significant enhancement in bearing protection. GE Marine Sell 3 Marine Diesel Engines at Korea Expo

At the presently running Kormarine International Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment Exhibition in Busan, South Korea, GE Marine say they have sold three 16V250 marine diesel engines: 2 engines to Dongwon Industries, one of the world's largest tuna fishery companies; and one engine to Hansung Enterprises, a leading Korean seafood and fishery company. The GE Marine engines will power 80-meter-long tuna purse seiners. The engines are IMO (International Maritime Organization) Tier II and KRS (Korean Register of Shipping) certified and scheduled for commissioning in early 2014. Local support is provided by GE Marine’s regional distributor, YusinHR.

GE Marine Engines Grab Orders at IWS 2012

GE Marine take 16 orders at the 2012 International WorkBoat Show (IWS) in New Orleans to deliver L250 and V250 engines. A combined total of 16 engines have been ordered for newbuilds and repowers by new customer Hyak Maritime and by an existing customer of GE Marine, Weeks Marine, Inc. Headquartered in Delaware, Hyak Maritime selected GE engines for the main propulsion of two 120-foot ASD Titan Class tugs. GE Marine will provide four 2,679 horsepower 8L250 engines to power these tugs. One of the largest marine dredging and tunneling contractors in the United States and Canada, Weeks Marine, Inc. has ordered four 6L250 and eight 16V250 engines to power and repower dredge pumps, serve as main propulsion and power gensets. These GE Marine L250 and V250 engines are ABS classed and meet U.S.

GE Engines for Panama Canal Tugboats

This marks the third order by the authority for GE Marine engines to power its fleet. The first order for 26 GE Marine Model 12V228 engines was placed in 2008 to power 13 vessels that are now in service. A second order was placed in 2009 for an additional four Model 12V228 engines for tugs still being built. Marinsa International, the GE Authorized Distributor for Panama, will commission and install the engines and continue to support the operating fleet. GE Marine say their engines are designed for availability, performance and low life-cycle cost. GE’s global distributor network provides regional support and service for the portfolio of GE Marine engines. "These new tugboats are an important acquisition for the operation of the Panama Canal.

Cruise + Ferry 2001 Preview

This year's Cruise + Ferry Exhibition promises to be even bigger than it was in 1999. The biennial show, which draws thousands of cruise and ferry operators, chief engineers, interior designers and naval architects is recognized worldwide as the premier exhibition in its market. With more than 450 companies representing more than 45 countries already scheduled to show off their innovations, record visitor and delegate participation is also expected at the conference, which will be held from May 8-10. With booths situated in London's Grand and West halls of Olympia, attendees will have the opportunity to meet and share ideas with the leading providers of products and services to the cruise, ferry and fast ferry industries.

GE Gas Turbines Power Three New Cruise Ships

GE announced that three new cruise ships recently went into service powered by GE LM aeroderivative gas turbines. The three ships -- Serenade of the Seas, Island Princess and Oosterdam -- each took their maiden voyage during July 2003. “GE is delighted to see the number of cruise ships continue to rise steadily that rely on our reliable and efficient LM gas turbines for propulsion as well as onboard power,” said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine Engines. “To date, 22 LM2500+ and four LM2500 GE gas turbine-generator sets are in operation or slated for service on 21 cruise ships.

GE To Provide Maintenance And Support For Canadian Navy's Gas Turbine-Based Frigate Fleet

GE Canada has signed a commercial maintenance and logistics support contract with Canada's Public Works Government Services. Under this multi-year contract, GE will provide maintenance and logistical support services for the Canadian Navy's fleet of LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines used to power Halifax-class patrol frigates. "This is a unique contract because it represents GE's growing trend to provide both military and commercial marine customers with single-point sourcing and comprehensive maintenance solutions," said Pierre Ayotte, Director, Government Programs for GE Canada. The contract will provide the Canadian Navy with a decrease in administrative functions such as procurement, inspection and technical support and material and inventory management associated with the LM2500.

GE Marine Engines Extends MSS Agreement with MTU

GE Marine Engines announced it has extended its Marine System Supplier (MSS) agreement with MTU Friedrichshafen (MTU), covering MTU's packaging and distribution of GE LM marine aeroderivative gas turbines. "Our successful MSS agreement with MTU dates back to the 1970s," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine Engines. "This relationship has made it possible for our LM1600, LM2500 and LM2500+ gas turbines to be used alone or in combination with MTU diesel engines from their full line of diesel engines. GE LM gas turbines cover the power range from 4,500 kilowatts (kW) to 42,700 kW. To date, MTU has packaged several GE LM gas turbines for commercial fast ferries and military vessels.

Gas Turbines Continue Making Commercial Inroads

GE Marine Engines has been supplying integrated propulsion systems for a variety of commercial and military marine customers for more than 25 years. GE's complete line of aeroderivative gas turbines includes the LM500 (6,000 hp), LM1600 (20,000 hp), the LM2500 (33,600 hp), the LM2500+ (40,500 hp) and the LM6000 (57,330 hp). For instance, the first gas turbine-powered fast ferry in Greece entered service in the summer of 2001. This Corsaire 14000-class monohull is powered by two GE LM2500+ gas turbines in a combined diesel and gas turbine (CODAG) arrangement with two diesel engines. The ship was built for operator Maritime Company of Levos (NEL), Piraeus, Greece, by Alstom Leroux Naval Shipyard in France.

GE Marine Engines Power Final Sealift Ship

GE Marine Engines’ LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines and main reduction gears power the eighth and final Strategic Sealift ship, the USNS Soderman, recently launched by National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO). “GE is proud to have supplied the engines, gears and automation systems for the eighth Sealift ship. This brings the total number of U.S. Navy ships fitted with GE’s gas turbines to 192,” said Karl Matson, General Manager of GE Marine Engines. “Our engines continue to provide the Navy with outstanding reliability, logging over 7.5 million operating hours in service for our country,” Matson added. Two GE LM2500s are used on each gas turbine-powered Sealift vessel. The gas turbines offer 32,000 horsepower -- a special rating for the Sealift operating profile.

GE Marine Engines To Supply For Corsaire

GE Marine Engines is set to supply Motoren- und Turbinen-Union (MTU), Friedrichshafen, Germany with a pair of GE LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbines. The units will be utilized to power the Corsaire 14000-class monohull fast ferry being constructed for Maritime Company of Lesvos (NEL), Piraeus, Greece. France-based Alstom Leroux Naval Shipyard is building this innovative new vessel class of fast ferry for NEL. The yard also constructed the Corsaire 13000, which is scheduled to enter service this June for Societe Nationale Maritime Corse Mediterranee (SNCM). LM2500+ gas turbines will be used in a Combined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) configuration with two diesel engines. With a total propulsion of 66 megawatts, the 460 ft.

Contracts

The U.S. Navy awarded the work package on its USS Whidbey Island to Norshipco, a member of the U.S. Marine Repair shipyard family. The contract, which calls for topside phased maintenance, fixed-price availability, states for work to commence on May 24 for a September 1 completion. The work package includes topside repairs, electrical and mechanical repairs, and ship alterations. Specific mechanical repairs entail main propulsion diesel engines, and ship alterations include the RAM Mk31 Mod and Ship's Self Defense System installations. Stratos has been awarded a contract to supply C-band satellite equipment and teleport services for PanCanadian Petroleum Limited's exploration drilling program offshore Nova Scotia.

GE's Gear Plant Receives U.S. Navy's Theater Surface Team Award

GE Marine Engines' Lynn, Mass. Gear Plant recently received the U.S. Navy's Theater Surface Combatant Team Award for Excellence for the prompt effort performed on the main reduction gear of the USS Decatur DDG 73 destroyer. The award was presented to GE in July by U.S. Navy Capt. Fred Parker, AEGIS Shipbuilding program manager. According to the U.S. Navy citation, signed by Rear Admiral William W. "Showing extraordinary initiative and responsiveness, team members immediately took action to identify the problem, deploy the necessary resources, and accomplish repairs in a timely and professional manner.

Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) is a propeller enhancing device, which is designed to cut fuel consumption and exhaust gases by up to five percent while incurring no additional maintenance cost once installed. The unit, according to H. Yumoto Manager of PBCF Div. Mitsui O.S.K. Techno Trade, Ltd., is now operational on 720 ship worldwide. The PBCF rectifies the propeller hub vortex and recovers rotational energy otherwise lost in the propeller slip stream. Increasing propeller thrust by over one percent and reducing propeller torque by over three percent, the PBCF reportedly results in fuel savings of up to five percent or compared to vessels operating at equivalent speeds but without the PBCF, alternatively, a 1.5 percent increase in speed at the same engine output.

GE Marine Engines Appoints Douglas As Marketing Director

GE Marine Engines has appointed Richard K. Douglas as director, Marketing and Sales. Douglas will lead the worldwide marketing and sales effort for GE's full line of LM marine gas turbines and main reduction gears. Prior to joining GE in 1996 after retiring from the U.S. Army, he served as GE Aircraft Engines' Asia Regional Black Belt for Six Sigma in Tokyo, Japan. Douglas also held the position of a senior regional director and business development leader, instrumental in launching the GE90-powered 777X aircraft in Japan. Douglas holds an M.P.A. from Harvard, and a B.S. degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Cruise Industry News Briefs

Following extensive dock trials, Royal Caribbean's 88,000-gt Radiance of the Seas departed the covered building dock at Meyer Werft's Papenburg shipyard. The vessel was then towed to the fitting-out quay for further completion of the interior, precedent to its sea trials, which are scheduled for January. The first of a four-part vessel series built by Meyer Werft for RCCL, Radiance of the Seas measures 962 ft. (293.2 m) with a breadth of 106 ft. (32.2 m). With its top service speed of more than 24 knots, the vessel can accommodate up to 2,500 passengers in 1,050 cabins; 850 crewmembers. Propelled via two 20 MW azipods, the vessel is the first of its kind to house a combination gas and steam turbine power package. The vessel is scheduled for a spring 2001 delivery.

GE Marine Starts Engineering For Eighth LHD

GE Marine Engines has received partial funding from Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Miss. to begin the engineering work on equipment to be used on the U.S. Navy's eighth LHD Wasp-class large-deck, multipurpose amphibious assault ship. This LHD project represents several milestones. The ship will be powered by two GE LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbines, with GE main reduction gearing (two gearboxes). This marks the first military application of GE's LM2500+ gas turbine. Currently there are 20 LM2500+ in or slated for operation worldwide on various commercial fast ferries and cruise ships, with an additional 74 units in diverse power generation applications. The LM2500+s each will have the U.S. Navy rating of 35,000 shaft horsepower for the LHD application. GE expects to finalize the U.S.

Algae-X International has announced its agreement with Nordic Tugs, to integrate the Algae-X Fuel Decontamination Technology into the fuel systems of the company's diesel-powered vessels. Mr. Shelton is incorporating Algae-X technology with traditional filtration to fulfill his goal of providing owners of Nordic Tugs with maximum reliability systems. GE Marine Engines Powers Brilliance of the Seas

GE Marine Engines announced that a GE LM2500+ combined gas turbine and steam turbine integrated electric drive system (COGES) plant powers Royal Caribbean International's Brilliance of the Seas cruise ship which recently made its maiden voyage. and the Caribbean. is of 90,090 gross tonnage and has a cruising speed of 25 knots. Infinity, Summit and Constellation. 59 megawatts. propulsion as well as all onboard power generation. gas turbines aboard the six ships have accumulated 75,000 hours in service. The COGES arrangement is a very efficient use of energy. generation and service steam use. which is customary for most cruise ships.
