USCG Cutter Munro Powered by GE

GE’s Marine Solutions announced that the U.S. Coast Guard commissioned Munro, a new National Security Cutter (NSC), on April 1 in Seattle, Washington. All of thenew Legend class cutters use the same COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion system featuring one GE LM2500 gas turbine and two diesel engines. According to a U.S. Coast Guard press release, Munro is the fourth NSC to be homeported on the West Coast in Alameda, Calif. It was commissioned in Seattle to honor the Coast Guard’s only Medal of Honor recipient, Signalman First Class Douglas A. Munro (1919-1942).

USCGC Kimball Christened; GE Marine Gas Turbines Provide Power

The U.S. Coast Guard’s seventh new National Security Cutter, Kimball (WMSL 756), was christened on March 4. The ceremony was held at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division in Pascagoula, Miss. According to HII, Kimball is the third ship named in honor of Sumner I. Kimball. The first Kimball (WSC/WMEC-143) was commissioned in 1927, and was eventually decommissioned in 1968. The second ship to bear the name was SS Sumner I. Kimball (EC2-S-C1); it was torpedoed and sank by the Nazi submarine U-960 with the loss of 64 American lives.

LM2500 Gas Turbine Powers Turkish Navy's MILGEM Corvette

GE’s Marine Solutions announced that the Turkish Navy’s third MILGEM multi-purpose corvette TCG Burgazada was launched powered by a GE LM2500 gas turbine-based propulsion system. The launch ceremony was held in mid-June at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard; a keel laying ceremony was also held for sister MILGEM ship TCG Kınalıada. The propulsion system for TCG Burgazada (F-513) is the same as sisters TCG Heybeliada (F-511) and TCG Büyükada (F-512), consisting of an LM2500 gas turbine in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines. Total propulsion power is 31,000 kilowatts, allowing the ships to reach maximum speed in excess of 29 knots. The corvettes have an overall length of 99 meters with a displacement of 2,300 tons.

The German Navy's third F125-class frigate Sachsen-Anhalt was christened in March during a ceremony held at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipyard in Hamburg. The U.S. Navy has recently commissioned and launched two Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) of the Independence-variant, both of which are powered by two GE LM2500 marine gas turbines, GE Marine reports. The USS Jackson was commissioned on December 5 in a ceremony in Gulfport, Miss., following the launch of sister ship LCS USS Omaha in late November, also in Gulfport. Furthermore, according to shipbuilder Austal USA, the future USS Montgomery also is preparing for acceptance sea trials in early 2016.

GE Gas Turbines to Power US Navy’s New Destroyers

The U.S. Navy’s new DDG 121 and DDG 122 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers will be powered by eight LM2500 marine gas turbines supplied by GE Marine, who also received a five-year extension on its requirements contract for the DDG 51 program. “Once operational, these Arleigh Burke-class destroyers will be in service for some 30 years. GE Marine will be there alongside the U.S. Navy for the life of this program, providing support of the LM2500 gas turbines through continual infusion of advanced technologies,” said Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, Marine Operations, GE Marine, Evendale, Ohio.

USS Cincinnati Will Be Powered by GE Engines

GE Marine said its LM2500 marine engines will provide power for the U.S. Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), USS Cincinnati (LCS 20). USS Cincinnati’s two engines will be manufactured at GE’s Evendale, Ohio facility. GE Marine reports that its LM2500 gas turbine will power the United States Coast Guard’s eighth National Security Cutter Midgett (WMSL 757). The ship will be powered by one GE LM2500 gas turbine and two diesel engines in a Combined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion system. All eight ships in the U.S. Coast Guard’s Legend-class cutter program feature the same LM2500-based CODAG propulsion arrangement. Similar to its sister NSCs, Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division will construct the 418-foot-long Midgett at its Pascagoula, Mississippi, shipyard.

National Security Cutter Hamilton (WMSL 753) was commissioned by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) on December 6, 2014, at its home port of Charleston, S.C. GE Marine reports that the vessel is powered by one GE LM2500 gas turbine and two diesel engines in a Combined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion system. Constructed in Pascagoula at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division, Hamilton previously completed a series of sea trials that proved the successful operation of a variety of components including the CODAG system.

GE Gas Turbine to Power Italian Frigate

GE Marine has received an order to supply one LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbine to Avio Aero of Turin, Italy, a GE Aviation business. The gas turbine will power the Italian Navy’s eighth FREMM frigate. Through Avio Aero, at least 17 LM2500+G4 gas turbines are expected to provide propulsion for the Italian-French-Moroccan FREMM program, which includes eight ships each for the Italian and French navies and one ship for the Royal Moroccan Navy. Other international navies are considering the FREMM frigate for use in their fleets.

Littoral Combat Ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) was commissioned by the United States Navy on April 5 at its home port of San Diego, California. GE Marine reports that the German Navy’s Baden-Württemberg(F125-class) frigatewas christened in December 2013, powered by a GE LM2500 gas turbine-based propulsion system. The christening ceremony was held at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in Hamburg, Germany. According Dr. MTU Friedrichshafen, a GE Marine System Supplier, provided the ship’s propulsion module, which includes one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets in a combined diesel-electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion arrangement.

GE Marine reports that it will provide eight LM2500 marine gas turbines to power the United States Navy’s DDG 117 and DDG 118 destroyers, to be named USS Paul Ignatius and USS Daniel Inouye respectively. The gas turbine will power the French Navy’s ninth FREMM frigate. Through Avio Aero, at least 18 LM2500+G4 gas turbines will provide propulsion for the Italian-French FREMM program, which includes six ships for the Italian Navy, 11 ships for the French Navy, and one ship for the Royal Moroccan Navy. Other international navies are considering the FREMM frigate for use in their fleets.

GE to Supply Austal with Gas Turbines for Navy Ships

GE Marine said it will provide Austal USA, Mobile, Ala., with four LM2500 marine aeroderivative gas turbines to power the United States Navy’s 14th and 16th Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). GE is providing 20 LM2500 gas turbines for the Austal USA LCS program, part of a contract for up to 10 ships over a five-year period. The Austal-built LCSs are powered by two LM2500s arranged in a combined diesel or gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines. According to Austal, Coronado (LCS 4) will complete sea trials later this spring.

GE Delivers Gas Turbine to Avio for French Navy Vessel

GE Marine has delivered one LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbine to Avio S.p.A. of Turin, Italy, a GE Marine System Supplier. The gas turbine will power the French Navy’s eighth FREMM frigate Lorraine. The Italian-French FREMM program marks the first application in the marine sector of GE’s LM2500+G4 gas turbine, which has 17% more power than its LM2500+ predecessor. Through Avio, 18 LM2500+G4 gas turbines will provide propulsion for the current FREMM program, which includes six ships for the Italian Navy, 11 ships for the French Navy, and one ship for the Royal Moroccan Navy.

GE to Provide MTU with LM2500 Gas Turbine

GE Marine reports that it will provide MTU Friedrichshafen, Friedrichshafen, Germany, with one LM2500 gas turbine for the German Navy’s fourth Baden-Württemberg-class (F125) frigate. For each new F125 frigate, MTU will provide the German Navy with one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets in combined diesel-electric and gas turbine propulsion arrangement. The keel for the first F125 frigate was laid in November 2011 at the Blohm +Voss shipyard in Hamburg.

Evendale, Ohio -- GE Marine reported that it will provide MTU Friedrichshafen with one LM2500 gas turbine for the German Navy’s third Baden-Württemberg-class (F125) frigate. “We are pleased to also announce that GE recently extended its Marine System Supplier agreement with MTU, a long-standing relationship which has been in place between the two companies since the early 1970s,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine general manager. Under the MSS agreement, MTU buys GE Marine LM gas turbines and installs them into MTU packages for integration into complete propulsion systems.

LM2500 Gas Turbines for USN New DDG 51 Restart

GE Marine delivered eight LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines that will power the United States Navy’s DDG 113 and DDG 115 destroyers, in the DDG 51 restart program. Commencing with this program, the U.S. Navy has adopted GE’s recommended LM2500 common engine initiative. “The U.S. Navy’s adoption of the LM2500 common engine program allows GE to leverage the LM2500 industrial volume to control cost, and improve manufacturing and durability, as well as spare parts lead times, in support of U.S. Navy fleet,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine general manager.

GE delivers two LM2500+G4 marine gas turbines to Avio for French and Italian FREMM frigates. GE Marine has delivered two LM2500+G4 aeroderivative marine gas turbines to Avio S.p.A. of Turin, Italy, a GE Marine System Supplier. The gas turbines will power the Italian and French Navy’s fifth and seventh FREMM frigates, respectively. The first French Navy frigate Aquitaine of the Italian-French FREMM program was launched in December 2010 at DCNS’ shipyard in Lorient, France. The first Italian Navy FREMM Bergamini was launched in June 2011.

GE Marine announces it has delivered two LM2500 marine aeroderivative gas turbines to Austal USA’s Mobile, Alabama, shipyard. These units will power the United States Navy’s Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship Jackson (LCS 6). GE will provide 20 LM2500 gas turbines for the Austal USA LCS program, part of a contract for up to 10 ships over a five-year period. Similar to the previous two Austal-built LCS Independence and Coronado, Jackson will be powered by two LM2500s arranged in a CODAG configuration with two diesel engines.

GE Delivers LM2500 Gas Turbines for Royal Australian Navy’s

GE Marine reports it has delivered two LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines to ASC in Adelaide, Australia. The LM2500s will power the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) third Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD). ASC, the AWD project shipbuilder within the AWD Alliance, is constructing all three Hobart-class AWDs. Each ship features two LM2500s configured in a CODOG arrangement with two diesel engines. The RAN’s new destroyers are based on the design developed and used by Navantia of Spain for the Spanish Navy’s F100 frigate program.
