The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of its newest warship, a state-of-the-art aircraft carrier to be named in honor of the 38th president of the United States. The product of years of construction, planning and design, the future USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) was delivered from Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division to the Navy in Newport News, Va., on May 31, following the ship's completion of acceptance trials May 26. Ford will be commissioned into the fleet this summer, formally placing the ship into active service.

U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa hosted 23 distinguished visitors from multiple European countries aboard aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) as a part of the Navy's Distinguished Visitor (DV) Embark program, Oct. 30. The Honorable Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy March 18, as the 2014 Hedrick Fellow. Justice Scalia will address the corps of cadets in Leamy Hall Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., in an event that is open to the public. Justice Scalia was nominated by President Ronald Reagan and is currently the longest-serving justice on the Supreme Court. He took his seat on the Court, Sept. 26, 1986. The purpose of the Hedrick Fellow program is to bring world-renowned political, military, and industry leaders to the Academy to share their knowledge and insight with cadets and faculty, and provide an opportunity for the Coast Guard’s future leaders to learn from the experiences of America's most distinguished leaders.

Unmanned aircraft accomplishes first ever ‘touch-and -go’ aboard aircraft carrier CVN 77. The Navy's X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstrator (UCAS-D) has begun touch-and-go landing operations aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush following on board launching. For UCAS-D, this represents the most significant technology maturation of the program. Austal USA, Mobile Ala., was awarded a $99,557,548 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-08-C-2217) on Jun. 17, 2009, for long lead time material (LLTM) for Ships 2 and 3 of the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) Program. This contract provides LLTM for main propulsion engines, aluminum, waterjets, reduction gears, generators, and other components to support construction of JHSV Ships 2 and 3, commencing in June 2010. The LLTM procured or manufactured for construction or installation in JHSV 2 and 3 will be subsumed with their associated costs into their respective ship construction line items upon award of construction contracts for JHSV 2 and 3.

The shipbuilders of Northrop Grumman Corporation (NSYE:NOC) were honored by the Virginia House of Delegates during a ceremony held on April 8 at the start of the Reconvened Session. The 2009 General Assembly adopted a resolution commending the employees of the company's Shipbuilding sector on the completion of the USS George H.W. Navy tradition dictates that each ship constructed for the Navy be honored by ceremonies on four historic occasions: keel laying, christening (or launching), commissioning, and decommissioning. George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) will be honored with the first of its historic occasions on Saturday, September 6, at Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA. The keel laying celebrates the laying of the first timber of a ship and can be traced back to the construction of early Navy ships. The present-day ceremony maintains the tradition, but has been modified because of updated materials, technology, and shipbuilding techniques.
