Carnival Maritime GmbH has announced  that Dr Hermann J. Klein has been appointed as its new Managing Director, starting September 1st, 2018. Klein is currently Managing Director and Group COO of CPO Holding (Offen Group) in Hamburg, Germany. He will be succeeding Lars Ljoen, who will join Carnival Cruise Lines in Miami, USA, as Head of Marine Operations. Carnival Maritime is the marine service unit for Costa Group with its brands AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, and Costa Asia. “Hermann Klein is a long-standing, well recognized executive of the maritime industry and has the perfect background and profound marine experience to further drive innovation and operational excellence across our fleet,” said Michael Thamm, Group CEO, Costa Group and Carnival Asia.

U.S. Jeffrey G. Lantz, Director of Commercial Regulations and Standards for the United States Coast Guard’s Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety, Security and Stewardship is slated to moderate a special session of a panel discussion consisting of a Coast Guard Rear Admiral and shipping industry professionals on critical cyber security issues and concerns for the industry. Top Society Announces Further Expansion in Germany. Last month MR’s Henrik Segercrantz traveled to Hamburg for an exclusive preview of the SMM 2010 exhibition. The SMM international trade fair for shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology will take place in Hamburg, Germany, on 7-10 September. This year much focus will be on environment-friendly technologies and products. The supporting program for SMM 2010 will for the first time this year include the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (gmec), and the Offshore Dialogue, which will also look into maritime technologies for offshore mining and wind farms.

The 61st Council Meeting of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) at Germanischer Lloyd's head office in Hamburg achieved a number of significant developments. Dr Hermann J. Klein, Chairman of IACS and member of the Executive Board of GL, welcomed thirty representatives of eleven IACS member societies. The group of high level class managers reviewed the harmonization process of the Common Structural Rules for tankers and bulk carriers. The Council agreed on a revised time schedule for the harmonization project aligning with the latest IMO decision on the implementation of Goal Based Standards. IMO has requested submission of rules for verification by December 31st, 2013. The Council confirmed the significance of moving ahead with the harmonization project.

A collaboration on advanced maritime training has been agreed on between Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC) and GL Academy. The Principal of AEMTC, Capt. K.N. Deboo, Dr Hermann J. Klein, Member of the Executive Board Germanischer Lloyd, K. Seal, Risk Manager of AEMTC, and Dr Volkmar Wasmansdorff, Executive Vice President and Director Region Asia/Pacific with GL, signed the agreement. The first GL Academy course on "Ship Structures II" will be held in February. Further topics are scheduled for 2009. The cooperation marks the beginning of an extensive collaboration to work jointly on a post-graduate diploma course in naval architecture. Additionally, value-added seminars and workshops for the maritime industry will be provided.

In the last two years, shipowners have seen bunker prices increase by roughly 140%. Additionally, considering upcoming environmental regulations, shipowners pay more attention to an economical and environmental friendly way of transport. Two 7,250 dwt multi-purpose-vessels are the latest addition to the orderbook of classification society Germanischer Lloyd. The ships will be built at Ananda Shipyard in Bangladesh for German shipowners Komrowski and Herrmann Lohmann Schiffahrt. Germanischer Lloyd Member of the Executive Board Dr Hermann J. Klein and Ananda Shipyard’s Managing Director Mrs. Afruja Bari signed the agreement at SMM in Hamburg. The two multi-purpose-vessels belong to a series of ten. The eight previous ships were already ordered with GL class in December 2007.

Hellenic Shipyards has secured a contract for the construction of a sea platform to accommodate offshore wind-parks for location in the Baltic and . The classification of the 70 metre platform Thor has been entrusted to Germanischer Lloyd. Mr. Ioannis Manolemis, Member of Hellenic Shipyards Board of Directors, and Dr. Hermann J. Klein, Member of the Executive Board Germanischer Lloyd signed the contract today at Posidonia. The platform is 70 metres long, 40 metres wide, has a draft of 6 metres and can be operated in water depths of up to 50 metres.

The Russian Maritime Authority has authorized classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to perform statutory duties on ships with Russian flag. Germanischer Lloyd is the very first foreign society to be granted this right. Russian shipowners can now choose GL as their recognized organization, and thus profit from the society's longtime expertise in the maritime industry.

The German Society for Maritime Technology (STG) has become a member of CEMT, the Confederation of European Maritime Technology Societies. president Dr. Hermann J. Klein and STG Secretary General Iwer Asmussen were welcomed by CEMT's nine member institutions from the UK, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy. "Ship efficiency is a question of perspective", this is one conclusion of the two-day expert conference of the German Society for Maritime Technology on "How to make ships more efficient?". More than 150 participants from all over the world attended the first international conference on ship efficiency in Hamburg. Increasing fuel prices and strong environmental concerns have initiated the high ranking forum of naval architects, ship engineers, ship owners, ship builders, maritime institutions and suppliers, classification societies, financial analysts investors, academics and media representatives. Participants came from Australia, Denmark, Indonesia, Italy, Iran, Norway, Sweden Finland, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, UK, India, Korea and the US.

Rainer Schöndube, Member of the Executive Board at Germanischer Lloyd AG, will conclude his tenure at the classification society based in Hamburg on 30 September 2007. guests came to his farewell at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hamburg. At the beginning of Schöndube's career, in 1980, Germanischer Lloyd had 535 employees. Today, over 4,100 employees in over 76 countries work for the classification society. During this period Germanischer Lloyd's newbuilding orderbook rose from 1.1 million GT to over 24 million GT. The Fleet in Service which Germanischer Lloyd monitors has grown since 1980 from 16.5 million GT to over 70 million GT. The number of ships under regular supervision has nearly doubled, and currently totals more than 6,300 units.

Rainer Schöndube, Member of the Executive Board at Germanischer Lloyd AG, will resign from office leaving the management on September 300. He will, however, stay affiliated with Germanischer Lloyd as adviser. With his retirement Schöndube, who has been responsible for the commercial field and the Industrial Services at Germanischer Lloyd, gives way for a change in the Executive Board. On September 1, 2007 the Executive Board of Germanischer Lloyd will be extended by Dr Joachim Segatz. Dr Segatz will take over Mr Schöndube's finance division. Dr Segatz studied Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on aircraft construction and fluid mechanics at the Technical University Braunschweig, Germany.

At a shareholders' meeting, Germanischer Lloyd's Executive Board announced the successful defense against the hostile takeover bid by a French competitor. The binding purchase offer by the Hamburg entrepreneur Günter Herz, with secure long-term perspectives for the Society, met with the approval of shareholders who were willing to sell. More than 40% of the shares changed hands. The Executive Board of Germanischer Lloyd has already approved the transfer of these registered shares. Last week, Günter Herz made all shareholders a firm and unconditional offer, with the aim of safeguarding the independence of the Society and the Hamburg location. The Executive Board and Supervisory Board of Germanischer Lloyd AG advise their shareholders to reject the acquisition offer by Bureau Veritas. It would neither meet the needs of the Society and its 3,200 employees, nor be in the best interests of the shareholders themselves. After due examination and assessment of the purchase proposal, both bodies of the Society have issued a joint statement to the shareholders, detailing their reasons for rejecting the offer. On 7th February 2003, the Supervisory Board of Germanischer Lloyd AG appointed Dr.-Ing. Hermann J. Klein (45) as a member of the Executive Board with effect from 1st September 2003. Dr. Klein will succeed Dr. tech. Hans G. Payer (64), who is to retire as of 31st December this year after over 10 years of service on the Executive Board.
