USCG Saves 6 from Sinking Vessel on Portage River

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rescued six people from the Portage River near Port Clinton, Ohio, Thursday, after the vessel they were aboard began taking on water. Shortly before 1:30 p.m., a member of Rescue Marine Salvage Company notified the watch stander at Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio that a 28-foot charter vessel with six people aboard was taking on water. A Station Marblehead boat crew responded aboard a 45-foot response boat. They arrived on scene and found the vessel listing to the port side with its engine compartment flooded. The crew removed five of the passengers from vessel for safety. The owner stayed aboard while commercial salvage dewatered the vessel.

PT-728, one of the few remaining examples of the torpedo-armed fast attack craft that helped America win WWII, is no ordinary boat. To help move the vessel carefully, HOSTAR Marine used a hydraulic yard trailer. Portraying various sister boats, PT-728 has played a starring role in numerous movies and documentaries, most famously as PT-73 in the television show McHale's Navy. Change of Command for Port Security Unit 309

Cmdr. Geoffrey S. Deas assumed command of Coast Guard Port Security Unit 309 from Cmdr. Gerald A. “Jerry” Nauert during a change-of-command ceremony at the PSU 309 Facility, Lake Erie Business Park in Port Clinton, Saturday. Deas became the ninth commanding officer of PSU 309 during the formal ceremony officiated by Capt. Thomas E. Crabbs of the Alameda, Calif., based Coast Guard Pacific Area command. The ceremony constituted the continuity of the commanding officer’s authority and represented a total transfer of accountability from one individual to another.

Ohio Marinas Upgrade With Travelift

Marine Travelift dealer increases local marine economy sales. Two Ohio marinas purchased new Marine Travelift Mariner Forklifts from Interstate Lift Truck, an established Marine Travelift dealer for 20 years. The sales are a positive indication that the marina economy is growing from its 2008 economic decline. Since then, vessels have continued to develop in size and weight; and Foxhaven Marina and Whiskey Island Marina remain invested in the future of the industry. Rack storage has been a primary source of revenue for Foxhaven Marina since 1973.

NMRA Officers Elected

The National Marine Representatives Association (NMRA) has elected its 2011-2012 officers and board members. One new officer and three new board members are joining the association's leadership group. Chris Kelly of Waters & David Co., New Orleans, Louisiana, is now president. Kathy Munzinger of Munzinger & Co., Springfield, Missouri, has been elected vice president and Ken Smaga of ComMar Sales LLC, Land O' Lakes, Florida, is now treasurer. Brandon Flack of Atlantic Marketing Co., Stonington, Connecticut, joins the officers as NMRA's new secretary.

Coast Guard Port Security Members Return Home

Twenty-one members of Port Security Unit 309, out of Port Clinton, Ohio, are arriving at Cleveland Hopkins Airport Saturday. PSU 309 was deployed to the Persian Gulf in February in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Port security units are self-sustainable units capable of deploying within 96 hours of notification and are able to establish operations within 24 hours of arrival in theater. The mission of a port security unit is to provide waterborne and limited land-based protection for shipping and critical port facilities.

News: Mission Marine Makes a Delivery for the Port Clinton

Mission Marine, a Sandusky boat-builder, delivered its Mission 288 to the Port Clinton Police Department in Ohio. The 25-ft. boat with a wide 11.5-ft. beam was purchased with a Port Security Grant awarded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The police department needed a multi-mission boat with the ideal platform, superb stability, large deck space, great maneuverability and ride to assist the critical missions of the police department. The department chose Mission Marine. "When I examined Mission Marine's boat, I was impressed," SGT Toney states, "It has an outstanding platform from which to work and incredible stability on the water. I knew our community would greatly benefit from her service.

Coast Guard Commissions New Port Security Unit

Coast Guard Pacific Area is set to commission a new port security unit (PSU 312). Vice Adm. Harvey Johnson, commander of Coast Guard Pacific Area, will be the presiding official for the ceremony in which Cdr. Donald G. Huenefeld will assume responsibility for PSU 312. PSUs provide a force of six active duty and 140 reserve members who possess specialized skills, capabilities and expertise to perform a broad range of port security and harbor defense missions. They are the model on which Coast Guard law enforcement detachments and maritime safety and security teams are based. PSUs are capable of augmenting Coast Guard or Department of Defense forces during major marine events or law enforcement operations focused primarily in ports, harbors, internal waterways and coastal regions.

Gladding-Hearn has again added to its reputation as one of the preeminent builders of fast craft in the U.S. with the delivery of Jet Express III, a new 88-ft. (26.6-m) high speed passenger ferry for Put-In-Bay Boat Line and Put-In-Bay Township Port Authority of South Bass Island, Ohio. The catamaran, built to the Incat design, will transport up to 149 passengers between Port Clinton and South Bass Island on Lake Erie. The owner currently operates two 98-ft. high speed ferries, which have carried more than 150,000 passengers each summer from the mainland for more than a decade. Cutter Deploys for Operation Enduring Freedom

A Charleston-based Coast Guard cutter has been ordered to deploy overseas to support Operation Enduring Freedom and to prepare for future contingencies. USCGC Dallas (WHEC-716), a 378-foot high endurance cutter with a crew of about 175, was underway on patrol this past weekend when it received the order from the Atlantic Area commander here to head overseas. Dallas is deploying with an HH-65B Dolphin helicopter and 7-member aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J. The ship departed Charleston Feb. 8, patrolling and conducting training off the East coast of the United States prior to receiving deployment orders. The largest and most capable class of Coast Guard cutter, Dallas is deploying at the request of the Department of Defense as the U.S.

Coast Guard Unit Returns From Iraq

The more than 100 members of Coast Guard Port Security Unit 305 (PSU 305) based at Ft. Eustis, Va., who were assigned under the European Combatant Commander for Operation Iraqi Freedom, will return home late Tuesday night. PSU 305 was deployed as part of a Master Plan, which included the deployment of extensive military equipment and more than 300,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen. Port Security Unit members are trained to provide waterborne and limited land-based protection for shipping and critical port facilities throughout the world. At the height of Operation Enduring Freedom, more than 100 PSU 305 personnel were deployed.
