Interview: Tore Morten Olsen, President Maritime, Marlink
Tore Morten Olsen, President Maritime, Marlink, discusses the pace and direction of high speed comms in maritime.Using metrics of your choice, put in perspective where we are today in terms of getting shipowners to adopt high speed communication solutions. The term broadband has been used in the maritime industry for at least a decade and if we are to follow the FCCâs definition which was upgraded to 25mbps from 4mbps (download) in 2015, then those high speed internet services are nothing of the sort. However, everything is relative.
Autonomous Shipping â Cyber Hazards Ahead
If autonomous vessels are the future of maritime shipping, then cyber threats may be its Achilles heel. Congested shipping, restricted visibility, limited maneuverability, and intensive docking activities all contribute to port hazards â 42 percent of EU reported marine accidents (injury/death/damage to ships) took place in port areas and 44 percent of workboat fatalities occurred on Tugs. Autonomous shipping should provide numerous benefits including increased safety by relieving crewmembers of unsafe and repetitious tasks.

Maritime Ports Pushed to Up Cyber Security
Resilience planning, Info Sharing Take SpotlightâOh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.â That old chestnut gets turned on its head when it comes to port cyber security. Itâs more like âOh what a tangled web weâve woven, so much harder to stop data stolen.âPorts today have the physical aspect of security pretty well nailed shut - gates, locks, fencing, alarms, cameras, drones, etc. As Chris Mason, Rajant Corp.âs director of sales for EMEA, notes, âEveryâŠ

Maritime Cyber Security: Good, Better & Best
As an industry that spends a great amount of its resources procuring and sending data in order to operate, the maritime industry is an attractive target for cyber criminals. Due to the remote locations of vessels and limited staff aboard ships and rigs, organizations and their offshore vessels and platforms are often ill equipped to ward off cyber threats. The cost and repercussions of a breach can be extensive in terms of both money and crew safety. According to a recent study, the cost of cybercrime has even surpassed that of drug crime.

Cyber Vigilance at Sea: The New Norm
The risk of cyber attacks on vessels at sea continues to be significant, and itâs not going away any time soon. Each year, it seems, there are more and more reports of hacks that have resulted in loss of critical data, financial loss or problems with IT systems or shipborne systems functionality. Shipowners have been reluctant to share information on actual or attempted breaches for fear of being identified. However, thereâs no shortage of examples of cyber attacks on vessels.
Shippers Need Practical Steps to Achieve Cyber Security
GTMaritime, provider of shipboard software solutions, says too many shipping companies have yet to take basic precautions for cyber security onboard ship. While cyber security has become a hot topic on conference platforms and industry events around the world, implementation plans and training for crew are lagging as companies take time to develop top-down strategies. While shipping companies get to grips with the longer term issues of securing supply chains and remote monitoring systemsâŠ
Security Check List for Internet Access at Sea
An increase in internet access at sea will lead to an increased risk of suffering a cyber-attack, says a research report by Protection Vessels International. However, if addressed correctly, this risk can be lowered to sit comfortably within the acceptable risk tolerance levels of an organisation. Britain is a maritime nation. We depend on the sea to trade with others. Over 90% of the worldâs trade goes by sea â this figure is 95% for the United Kingdom. - GBP 13.8 Billion contribution to UK GDP (0.9% overall). - GBP 2.7 Billion in taxation revenue. - 262,700 jobs (0.8% of total UK employment). The maritime sector is a very competitive one. If there is a perceived lack of preparedness against all threat vectors, then a customer may very well choose to use a competitor.
