Second Berth Opens at DP World London Gateway

Berth 2 now fully operational as five new services start up at DP World London Gateway

New shipping services are being announced as the second berth at DP World London Gateway opens for business. Britain’s newest port doubled its capacity as the second berth began operations in May. Five new shipping routes to North America, South America East Coast and West Coast, the Middle East and Europe are starting. New rail, road and container services are also announced. The G6, one of the world’s largest shipping alliances, will start a new service at DP World London Gateway on Friday, May 16.

FMC Commissioner Approves Amended G6 Alliance Agreement

Commissioner William P. Doyle of the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission has voted in favor of the amended G6 Alliance Agreement. Commissioner Doyle highlighted the U.S.-Flag international trade, U.S. mariner jobs and environmental benefits. He also pointed out concerns on some language in the amendment on how the G6 Parties may handle discussions and agreements with tug operators. "I am in favor of not taking any further action to delay the implementation of the amended G6 Alliance Agreement that was filed with the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC or Commission) on December 2, 2013.

G6 Alliance Plans Expansion

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL, President: Koichi Muto) , a Member of the G6 Alliance has announced plans to expand their cooperation to the Asia-North America West Coast and Trans-Atlantic trade lanes. The G6 Alliance said the expanded cooperation will provide customers with more service choices and increased sailing frequency. G6 Alliance Announces Port Rotations

After agreeing to expand the successful G6 Alliance to the transpacific trade earlier this year, the six member lines announced the port rotations of their new comprehensive and competitive service portfolio. Containership Alliance Launches Asia-Europe Service

Members of the G6 Alliance announced today that their groundbreaking cooperation in Asia-Europe container shipping will begin operation in the first week of March – one month ahead of schedule. “We are eager to roll out our competitive products to benefit customers by offering a comprehensive and increased coverage of 40 ports in the Asia-Europe market with more sailing frequency,” the members said in a statement. The G6 Alliance, serving the Asia-to-Europe-and-Mediterranean market was announced last December. The G6 Alliance members are the carriers in the Grand Alliance and New World Alliance: APL, Hapag-Lloyd AG, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Mitsui O.S.K Lines, Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Orient Overseas Container Line.

TNWA Group Launches Trans-Atlantic Service

The New World Alliance (TNWA) – APL Co. Pte Ltd (APL), Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) - today announced the launch of a new Trans-Atlantic service connecting Europe and the UK with the US East Coast and Panama. The Americas Europe Express (AEE) service is TNWA's third dedicated Trans-Atlantic service. It offers multiple weekly sailings from major US and European ports, as well as competitive transit times from Latin America to North Europe via the trans-shipment hub in Panama. The Alliance will deploy high reefer capacity ships with an average effective capacity of 3,200 TEU. APL will operate three vessels, and HMM and MOL will operate one vessel each.

Drewry: Container Schedule Reliability Improvement

Container service reliability improved for the second quarter in a row during the third quarter of 2011, according to Drewry Maritime Research’s latest Schedule Reliability Insight report. The report is the longest established independent survey of liner service reliability in the marketplace with data stretching back to the end of 2005. The proportion of 3,281 ships arriving on time (defined as either arriving at port on the advertised ETA or a day earlier) at selected ports in the third quarter of 2011 rose by 8 percentage points against the previous quarter to 63%. Maersk Line retained its position as the most reliable of the Top 20 carriers (by vessel fleet size) across all the trades covered by Drewry.

NOL Group Signs Contracts for Containerships

NOL Group confirmed it has signed contracts with Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., Ltd to build 12 new container vessels, including ten of its largest vessels. The confirmation follows the Group’s announcement on June 15 that it had signed letters of intent with both shipyards for its $1.54 billion newbuild program. * Upgrade of ten 8,400-TEU vessels to 9,200-TEU vessels with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Singapore-based NOL also announced that it had agreed to charter five of the newly ordered 14,000-TEU container vessels to alliance partner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) when they are delivered in 2013 and 2014.

MOL Orders New Containerships

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) today announced a decision to order two containerships (8,600 TEU) from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., with delivery slated for 2013. Along with eight 8,100 TEU ships already in operation, the new vessels will be deployed to Asia-Europe routes. The company also reached an agreement with NOL Group* for a three-year charter of five large containerships (14,000 TEU) of 10 that NOL Group has on order. The five chartered ships will be delivered in 2013 –2014 and will serve with the other five operated by APL on Asia-Europe routes. “Expansion of the fleet will secure needed capacity on the East-West route," said Junichiro Ikeda, CEO, MOL Liner.

The New World Alliance to Reduce Ocean Capacity

The New World Alliance said it will temporarily reduce capacity on selected Trans-Pacific Trade services to coincide with Lunar New Year factory shutdowns in Asia. The three container shipping lines in the alliance -- APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) said the winter deployment program is expected to last six weeks; more if necessary. "We'll review demand and capacity again well in advance of the peak shipping season," said APL President Eng Aik Meng. Winter deployment programs are routine for The New World Alliance carriers and the Trans-Pacific Trade in general, where Asian exports slow significantly during the Lunar New Year holiday break. Factory closures sharply curb the production of finished goods which are a staple of the trade.

Mitsui O.S.K Lines Ltd.(MOL)'s MOL Precision made its first call at Tan Cang-Cai Mep International Terminal (TCIT) in Vietnam on January 15, where a welcoming ceremony was held in commemoration of the event. New World Alliance Service Changes

The New World Alliance (TNWA) carriers –APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) announced revised capacity and service plans for the Transatlantic trade. TNWA and Maersk Line have been exchanging space in the Transatlantic trade. While TNWA continue to cooperate with Maersk Line, capacity reductions and service changes will be implemented in response to market conditions. While excess capacity will be eliminated from the Transatlantic by this group of carriers, enhancements on other routes will ensure continued service reliability and rapid transit times for shippers. •    Currently APL and HMM have the space on this loop. •    Subject to regulatory filing, from December 2009 the ATN/TA3 service between the US East Coast (USEC) and Europe will be suspended.

Joint Black Sea Service Suspend

The New World Alliance (TNWA) –Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), APL, and Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) – and Grand Alliance (GA) – Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Berhad, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) –announced on Feb. 3 the suspension of their joint Black Sea service, the EBX (East-Mediterranean/Black Sea Express).   The EBX has been operating since mid-June 2008 and deployed eight ships, each with a capacity of 5,000 TEU. MOL Sails Back into Southhampton

At 1,050 ft in length and capable of carrying over 8000 containers, the MOL Cosmos was an impressive sight as she sailed into Southampton for the first time early this morning. Although MOL has been offering services into Southampton as part of The New World Alliance, the arrival marked a return of MOL-owned vessels to the port after a break of several months. “MOL has been a long-time supporter of the port of Southampton, and we are very pleased to be able to include our newest and biggest vessels in the services we offer to and from the port,” commented Adrian Jones, MOL’s Regional General Manager for the UK and Ireland. Grand Alliance Changes Service

For this purpose the South China Express Service (SCE) of the GA will be temporarily adjusted to cover also the additional ports of the New York Express Service (NYX) of the NWA. The GA and NWA have agreed to jointly operate the loop for a period of 18 weeks as a seasonal arrangement. The SCE will move from an eight to nine ship loop in order to cover the additional ports without increasing the average speed in order to limit the additional bunker consumption for the benefit of the environment. The NWA and GA will provide five and four ships, respectively. The revised SCE service will make additional eastbound calls at Yantian and Manzanillo. Further Miami, Manzanillo, Balboa, San Pedro, Busan and Shanghai have been added.

TNWA Offers Two New Direct Shuttles

The New World Alliance (TNWA) carriers – APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) –  announced two new direct shuttle services linking , and on the US West Coast. Beginning in mid-May, the current PS3 service will be divided into two services. Transpacific Vessel Capacity Resumes Growth

Total vessel capacity supply by ocean carriers on the transpacific trade has started increasing again, according to a report released this week by ComPair Data Inc. Container Transport By Rail Remains Stable

According to the annual report of the Dutch organization of rail operators container transport by rail was constant in 2001. Within the Netherlands it declined with 2 percent to 225,000 TEU. On the one hand the bankruptcy of operator Deltalogic played a role, on the other hand the start of the Shortline shuttle Rotterdam-Eindhoven had a positive effect. International transport was practically constant: 560,000 TEU. Volume especially rose on the destinations far away such as Italy. This compensated the decline of maritime containers. On the short distances, for example Rotterdam-Antwerp, rail experiences fierce competition from inland shipping. Koole Tankstorage Pernis is going to expand its terminal for storage and distribution of edible oils and fats.

Report: Three Carriers Dominate TransAtlantic Trade

Three new carrier groups now control 58% of the total capacity in the transatlantic container trade, according to World Liner Supply, a new quarterly report from the compairdata.com on-line shipping database. The fourth quarter 2000 issue of World Liner Supply shows that the merger of services and the combination of smaller carrier groups has led to a substantially higher market concentration in the North America/northern Europe container trade.
