Two Trapped, Scores Rescued After Flames Engulf Greece-Italy Ferry

Two people are trapped on a ferry that was engulfed in a blaze as it sailed from Greece to Italy early on Friday, the coastguard said, after scores of others passengers and crew members were rescued.A total of 239 passengers and 51 crew were onboard the Italian-flagged Euroferry Olympia when the fire broke out and rescue vessels had taken most of them to the island of Corfu where ambulances were waiting, the Greek coastguard added."We were woken up around 4:20 a.m. Within an hour we had left the ship ...

Grimaldi Group’s Fifth Hybrid RoRo Christened

The fifth in a series of 12 hybrid ro-ro ships for the Grimaldi Group has been christened in the port of Catania.Built by the Chinese Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, Eco Catania and its sister vessels already in service in the Mediterranean are part of the GG5G (Grimaldi Green 5th Generation) class, which rank among the largest and most eco-friendly ro-ro ships in the world.With a transport capacity of more than 500 trailers, these green giants are able to halve CO2 emissions compared to the previous generation of ro-ro ships operated by the Grimaldi Group…

Bristol Port Upgrades Box Terminal

France Battles Slick from Capsized Boxship

French authorities battled on Thursday to contain an oil slick after the Italian Grande America ship capsized in the Atlantic this week.The Grimaldi Lines container ship capsized and sank on Tuesday, after catching fire while sailing from Hamburg to Casablanca. Britain's Royal Navy frigate Argyll rescued all 27 crew members from the water.The ship was carrying 2,200 tonnes of heavy fuel when it sank some 330 km (200 miles) off the coast from La Rochelle in western France. The 'Grande Halifax' Christened in Halifax

The Pure Car & Truck Carrier Grande Halifax, owned and operated by the Grimaldi Group, has been christened yesterday in Halifax, New Scotia. Godmother of the new vessel was Ms. Karen Oldfield, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority. A ceremony took place at Halterm/Autoport with the presence of a distinguished delegation composed of representatives of civil and maritime authorities, among which the mayor of Halifax Michael Savage, Members of Parliament, the honorary consul of Italy in Halifax Marilisa Benigno, port operators, shippers, managers of the Grimaldi Group and of its daughter company ACL (Atlantic Container Line).

Grimaldi Group Orders New RoRo Vessels

In the framework of the expansion and modernisation programme of its owned fleet, as anticipated in the last months, the Grimaldi Group has signed yesterday an agreement for the construction of six ro/ro vessels, for a total investment worth over USD 400 million. The order has been awarded to the Chinese shipyard Jinling, thus consolidating an important partnership with the Neapolitan Group, the world's leading company in the ro-ro sector. The new vessels, whose delivery is expected as from 2020, will have a length of 238 metres, a beam of 34 metres and will have a gross tonnage of 64,000 tonnes. They will be able to transport over 7,800 linear meters of rolling units, equivalent to about 500 trailers.

Fincantieri, Grimaldi Sign Cruise Revamp Deal

The construction of the two mid-body sections will begin in 2018, while the completion of the works at Palermo shipyard is foreseen within summer 2019. The two vessels, currently in service on the daily route Civitavecchia- Porto Torres-Barcelona with the “Grimaldi Lines” livery, have been built by Fincantieri shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia and delivered to the Neapolitan group in 2007 and 2008 respectively. They are 225 meters long, having a gross tonnage of 54,000 tons and capacity of transporting about 3,000 passengers, a 2,400 square meters car deck and approx. 3,000 linear meters for heavy vehicles. Fincantieri to Revamp Grimaldi Ferry Pair

Fincantieri and the Grimaldi Group have signed a letter of intent for the cruise ship lengthening and transformation program "Cruise Rome" and "Cruise Barcelona" . The construction of the sections that will be inserted in the ships will begin in 2018, while the end of the operations is expected, at the Palermo plant, by the summer of 2019. The two units, currently used on the daily route Civitavecchia-Porto Torres-Barcelona with the livery "Grimaldi Lines", were built by Fincantieri in the construction site of Castellammare di Stabia and delivered to the Neapolitan group respectively in 2007 and 2008. New Ferry Safety Initiative from RINA

Italy-based classification society RINA informs it has launched a ferry safety initiative. The Asset Integrity Management scheme for ro-pax ferries covers fire risk mitigation, single-failure risk assessment, enhanced planned maintenance and condition-based monitoring and also food and bacteriological risk management. Paolo Moretti, General Manager Marine, RINA Services, said, “With over 300 ferries in our class we are the world leaders in ro-pax ferry safety. That gives us two things. One is a lot of experience and feedback from vessels in service, the other is a sense of responsibility.

Big Carriers Reduce North-South Options

Maritime research company, Drewry, said in this week’s container insight report that it is not just on the East-West routes that big container lines are consolidating, but consortia have also been expanding in North-South tradelanes, thereby reducing the number of weekly services available to shippers. Hapag-Lloyd’s recent reduction in the number of weekly services offered to customers between Northern Europe and the East Coast of South America through slot charters is just another step towards carrier and joint service consolidation in the North-South trades.

Grimaldi Newbuild for Hamburg–West Africa Connection

Overnight from 25 to 26 September 2011, the GRANDE SIERRA LEONE docked at the Unikai terminal at the Port of Hamburg for the first time. It is the first sailing of the newbuild in the West Africa service operated by Grimaldi Lines. The GRANDE SIERRA LEONE joins the “Southern Express” service of the Grimaldi Lines, which now operates with a total of six ConRo ships and links Hamburg with the West African ports of Casablanca, Dakar, Conakry, Lome, Pointe Noire, Luanda and Douala. On the south-bound leg, the port rotation includes Amsterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre, Bilbao, Leixoes and Lisbon. The deployment of the GRANDE SIERRA LEONE allows Grimaldi to step up the frequency of departures to West Africa from ten to eight days.

Hamburg Port's Liner Network

Hamburg has one of the most comprehensive liner networks in Europe, which in turn means that it plays an important role as a transport hub for global cargo flows. Specialized liner traffic connects Hamburg to six continents. Over 100 container liner services travelling to destinations all over the world are based in Hamburg. One of the main markets for the Port of Hamburg are liner services from and to the Far East. In 2008 an average of 30 weekly full container services called at the Port of Hamburg. 19 new liner services were established in 2008. Eight of them sail on shipping routes to the Far East; three to India and the Middle East; two to South America and one each on routes in the regions North America, Australia / Oceania, Africa, the Mediterranean and the North and Baltic Seas.

Grimaldi Lines: First Departure from Hamburg

As the first vessel to be used in the new Euro-Aegean service of the Grimaldi Lines shipping company, the RoRo ship Grande Sicilia was dispatched at Hamburg's Unikai Terminal on 27 December 2008. Together with its sister ship the Grande Italia, the Grande Sicilia forms part of a new service offering fortnightly departures from Hamburg in the first instance. The ports of call are Setubal, Valencia, Leghorn, Civitavecchia, Salerno, Piraeus, Beirut, Lattakia (only when carrying sufficient cargo), Gemlik and Alexandria.

Salvors Refloat Grounded Vessels in Scheldt

Salvage and towage companies Multraship and URS have successfully refloated two grounded vessels in the past week in the River Scheldt. On April 10, the Swedish-flag RoRo car carrier Grande Argentina ran aground off Terneuzen. The vessel, operated by Grimaldi Lines, was enroute from Antwerp when it suffered a complete black-out, ironically within view of Multraship’s headquarters in Terneuzen. Having swung hard to starboard, the vessel grounded on a sandbank. Working together, salvage teams from Multraship and URS mobilised a total of nine tugs and salvage craft to refloat the vessel in a quick and efficient operation. The salvors then escorted the vessel to Flushing, where an inspection revealed no structural damage, and the Grande Argentina was cleared to proceed with its voyage.

Container Ship Capsizes in Belgian Port

According to the Herald Tribune, a large container ship capsized during loading Thursday in Belgian port city Antwerp, officials said. No injuries were reported. The cause of the capsizing of the Republica di Genova, a roll on/roll off vessel of the London-based Grimaldi Lines, was not immediately clear, authorities said. Grimaldi Group vessels carry containers and Fiat cars from Italy to Antwerp. Port of Antwerp Captain Jan Persi said the 215-meter-long (705-foot-long) vessel slowly rolled onto its starboard side in a dead end dock early in the morning. He said the ship began taking on water and that the captain ordered the crew to evacuate. The white-and-yellow vessel lay resting on its side, part of its hull above the waterline in the dock.
