U.S. DOT: Funding Available for Small Shipyards

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced the availability of $19.6 million in federal funding to support capital improvements and employee training at small U.S. shipyards. The grants are provided through the Small Shipyard Grant Program, and help eligible shipyards modernize operations, increase efficiency and reap the benefits of increased productivity. In 2013, U.S. shipbuilders directly employed 110,000 Americans and produced $37.3 billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Available to U.S.

Small Shipyards Can Apply for US Federal Grants

The U.S. Maritime Administration invites small shipyards to apply for a share of $9.45 million in federal funding to help enhance their efficiency & competitiveness. The grants are available for capital and related improvement projects that foster efficiency and competitive operations; quality ship construction, repair and reconfiguration; and employee training. Grants under the Maritime Administration's Small Shipyard Grant Program may not be used to construct buildings or other physical facilities or to acquire land unless such use is specifically approved by the Maritime Administration as being consistent with, and supplemental to, capital and related infrastructure improvements.

DOT's Marad: Small Shipyard Grant Program

Under the Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration Small Shipyard Grant Program, there is currently $9,457,986.00 available for grants for capital and related improvements to qualified shipyard facilities that will be effective in fostering efficiency, competitive operations and quality ship construction, repair and reconfiguration. This notice announces the intention of the Maritime Administration to provide grants to small shipyards. Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance Number: 20.814. Potential applicants are advised that, based on past experience, the number of applications will far exceed the funds available and that only a small percentage of applications will be funded.

AGENCY: Maritime Administration, DOT / ACTION: Notice of Small Shipyard Grant Program. SUMMARY: This notice announces the intention of the Maritime Administration to provide grants for small shipyards. Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance Number: 20.814. DATES: The period for submitting grant applications, as mandated by statute, commenced on November 18, 2011. The applications must be received by the Maritime Administration by 5 p.m. EST on January 17, 2012. Applications received later than this time will not be considered.

Grant Helps Riverhawk Acquire Travelift

Marine Travelift Inc. announced that Tampa, Fla.-based RiverHawk Marine has acquired one of its 300C mobile boat hoists, thanks in part to a Small Shipyard Grant from the U.S. Maritime Administration. The Small Shipyard Grants program is administered by the Office of Shipyards and Marine Engineering in Washington D.C. RiverHawk’s 7.5-acre facility on West Tyson Avenue in Tampa is located with easy deep-water access from the Gulf of Mexico.
