Elbe Fairway Dredging Begins

The deepening and fairway widening program on the Elbe River officially launched yesterday (July 23)."The adjustment of the Elbe fairway will offer much better connections between the Port of Hamburg and the global flow of goods," said Dr. Maximilian Rothkopf, Chief Operations Officer of Hapag-Lloyd AG, during a groundbreaking ceremony held today to mark the official start of dredging operations.“Once the relevant work has been completed, the world’s largest container ships will be able to reach the City of Hamburg with virtually no limitations,” Rothkopf said. ZIM Improves its Cross-Atlantic Services

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) has announced changes and improvements of the services between the Mediterranean and the US East Coast & Canada, ZCA and ZCI.The upgrades are planned to start in December (subject to regulatory approval), as follows:ZIM’s flagship ZIM Container Service Atlantic (ZCA), connecting main Mediterranean ports, US East Coast & Canada, will have the following rotation: Mersin – Ashdod – Haifa – Aliaga – Piraeus – Livorno – Barcelona - Valencia – Halifax – New York –  Norfolk – Savannah – Valencia – Tarragona – Mersin ZIM Container Service Italy (ZCI), in cooperation with THE Alliance and following the introduction of their upgraded product, commencing December 2018, will have the following rotation: La Spezia – Genoa – Fos – Barcelona – Valencia – New York –

ZIM to Enhance its Atlantic Network

​ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd (ZIM)  has announced a significant upgrading of its Atlantic network, offering improved connections between US, Canada and the Mediterranean, starting April 2017, subject to FMC approval. ZIM Container Service Italy (ZCI) - A new premium string, offering improved service to the Italian and French markets, connecting with Canada and the US East Coast, with faster transit time, additional ports of call in Italy and a direct call in Fos, France. ZIM’s flagship service, ZIM Container Service Atlantic (ZCA), operating 7 vessels, will focus on the East Med and Spain, with a new call in Algeciras, serving the South Spain market and adding new direct calls in two major Turkish ports- Izmir and Mersin.

Crowley Adds Sailings from North Atlantic to Puerto Rico

Crowley Maritime Corp. informs its liner services group will add sailings between Pennsauken, N.J., and San Juan, Puerto Rico, this summer. The company has served the Puerto Rico market since 1954. “With our accelerated sailing schedule, we have determined that we can add a sailing each month between Pennsauken and San Juan,” said John Hourihan, Crowley senior vice president and general manager, Puerto Rico services. “We’ve been working diligently since last December to add capacity and tweak our vessel rotations and operations to accommodate as much cargo as possible. The 580-series, triple-deck Ro/Ro barge capable of carrying 345 loads will alternate between the South Atlantic and North Atlantic services…

G6 Alliance Makes Seasonal Service Change

Pacific Atlantic 2 service has temporarily stopped calling European ports due to a seasonal change in market demand. The service portfolio between Asia and North America East Coast continues unchanged. Members of the G6 Alliance have adjusted one of its Pacific Atlantic services in response to seasonal changes in market demand. The Pacific Atlantic 2 (PA2) service will temporarily stop calling European ports, and instead turn around on the U.S. East Coast. The service portfolio between Asia and North America East Coast continues unchanged. The G6 Alliance continues to offer a variety of services between North America East Coast and Europe covering all major port pairs with weekly sailings. Additional service adjustments will be made where necessary to meet market demand.

G6 Alliance Announces Port Rotations

Members of the G6 Alliance  released details on port rotations for the proposed service expansion to the Asia-North America West Coast and Trans-Atlantic trade lanes, announced in early December last year. Subject to the completion of regulatory review process, the 17 services are scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2014. “The G6 Alliance monitors market developments closely and is continuously seeking opportunities to improve our service offerings,” member carriers said in a statement. “With the introduction of the Asia – North America West Coast and Trans-Atlantic services, the G6 Alliance will further strengthen its position to meet shippers’ demand for more comprehensive, seamless and efficient services with competitive transit times.

MOL Container Ships Remarkably Punctual on Some Routes

Container ship operators MOL has updated its KPI 'On Time Arrival Performance' quarterly results for October - December 2013 for the major trade lanes. In Q4 2013, MOL vessels maintained 100% on-time performance in Asia-USWC. The overall performance decreased to 83%, compared to 88% in Q3 2013 due to port congestion at Pusan and Shanghai. Asia-USEC services’ performance was slightly worsened to 62% in Q4 2013 due to port congestion at Pusan, Shanghai and Colombo, while MOL vessels significantly improved their on-time performance from 65% in Q3 to 92% in Q4 2013 due to less impact.

Maersk Line Completes Recapitalization

Maersk Line, Ltd has completed a recapitalization of its U.S. flag container fleet. The effort involved an investment of nearly $400m for the purchase and reflagging of nine ships into the U.S. registry. In keeping with its commitment to provide world-class U.S. flag transportation services, MLL's recapitalization plan called for the company to remove nine older, smaller ships from its U.S. fleet and replace them with larger, faster and more modern U.S. flag tonnage. MOL, Changes to N America Sales Team

MOL (America) Inc.’s Product Management Team has announced changes to its North America Sales Management. Effective immediately, Dennis Sheehan, Vice President Atlantic Services will direct MOL’s sales activities in the US Northeast, Midwest and Southeast regions, while Jim Galligan, Vice President Pacific Services will lead sales activities in the US Western States and Mexico. In their new assignments both gentlemen will report directly to Thomas M. Kelly, Executive Vice president and Chief Operating Officer for North America Area Management. MOL’s Product Management Team also includes Stephen Ryan, Vice President North America Customer Service and Richard Craig, Vice President Area Operations.

B&N Delivers MS Finnpine

As in the case of the Finnfighter, which has already been delivered, the Finnpine is one of a series of vessels specially designed for the transportation of forest industry products. The series will form the base for a new system service between Europe and North America and will also have capacity for containers and rolling cargoes. The efficient cargo-handling system and design ensure rapid, high-quality loading and unloading. The vessel's speed capability and seagoing characteristics will reduce delivery times. This type of vessel has the highest ice classification, which means that ports in the Gulf of Bothnia can be served during the winter season. "The delivery of the MS Finnpine is another milestone for B&N," says the President, Folke Patriksson.

Grimaldi Group Orders Five RoRo's for $430m

The Grimaldi Group ordered five Ro-Ro Multipurpose Car Carriers for its Atlantic Services. The order was placed with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard of Ulsan, South Korea, and its value is at around $430 million. The first ship is scheduled to enter service in spring 2010, with the others following at a few months interval one from each other, between 2010 and 2011. They are almost identical sisters of another 5 ships contracted with Uljanik Yard of Croatia, which are slated for delivery in 2008 and 2009. In line with the Grimaldi Group strategy, these new ships will be highly flexible in terms of cargo mix. At 25,000-dwt and with a service speed of 21 knots, each of the new vessels will be able to take on board up to 2,000 linear metres of Ro/Ro cargo, 2,000 cars and up to 800 TEU of containers.
