China’s Growth Could Boost Shipping

China’s shift towards a domestic consumer demand-oriented economy could provide a significant boost to the global shipping industry, as the world’s second largest economy targets more sustainable growth. “2013 will be another peak year of new vessel deliveries. Oversupply of capacity is still an obstacle for the shipping industry to overcome, but with the improvement of the world economy, the shipping sector is expected to experience moderate growth,” said Mr Xu Lirong, President of China Shipping (Group) Company. Mr Xu will examine this key issue affecting China, and the nation’s pivotal position in the international maritime arena, in a conference summit at Sea Asia, the region’s leading maritime event, in Singapore next April.

Drydocks World Dubai Wins SMEISA Award

Drydocks World - Dubai, the flagship ship repair, conversion and new building yard of Drydocks World has won the Ship Repair/Shipyard Award for the third time in a row at the 7th Seatrade Middle East and Indian Subcontinent Awards (SMEISA) 2009. The award was presented to Nawal Saigal, Managing Director, Drydocks World - Dubai, by Christopher Hayman, Chairman, Seatrade, at a gala ceremony in Dubai. Tight Credit Squeezes Maritime Industry

“Liquidity has come back to some extent,” said Oliver Ebner, Senior Manager, Project and Structured Finance for the National Bank of Abu Dhabi. Ebner is one of a panel of speakers lined up to address a special session on financing the industry in the global economic slowdown at Middle East Money & Ships, the region’s premier networking event for senior executives from the maritime and finance sectors. The conference from 7-8 October 2009 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai, will also assess the continued appetite for investment in shipping, the likely pattern for recovery, where the money will come from as well as providing a realistic assessment of the current order book.

“While the economic downturn has taken its toll on the global shipping industry, the Middle East market for workboats of all kinds continues to show vigorous growth,” said Christopher Hayman, Chairman of Seatrade, organiser of the Middle East Workboats exhibition and conference from 5-7 October 2009 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Growth in Middle East Shipbuilding, Repair

While the world is in the grip of an economic slowdown, the Arabian Gulf remains a dynamic growth centre for ship building and repair, said a maritime industry observer. “The region is one of the busiest commercial maritime hubs with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar having major ports and shipyards with more being built,” said Christopher Hayman, Chairman of Seatrade, organisers of the region's premier event focused on workboats to be held in Abu Dhabi later this year. Hayman to Keynote AAPA Workshop

Christopher Hayman, managing director of U.K.-based Seatrade, is scheduled to provide the keynote address on January 15, at the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Cruise Workshop in Barbados. Hayman is slated to discuss cruise fleet deployment trends at the opening session, at the Grand Barbados Hotel. the Western Hemisphere, because ports obviously play a most integral role in the cruise industry," said Hayman, who is based in Colchester, England. Hayman earned a history degree from Oxford University before joining the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in 1970. He returned to England in 1972 and became editor, and later publisher, of Seatrade magazine.
