Silver Ships Wins Its Largest-ever Shipbuilding Contract

Aluminum boatbuilder Silver Ships announced it has secured its largest shipbuilding contract order to date.The Theodore, Ala. builder said it was awarded a $6.1 million dollar firm-fixed-price General Services Administration (GSA) contract for the construction and delivery of up to 246 High-Speed Maneuvering Surface Target (HSMST) custom vessels. The deal includes options that, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of the contract to $48.25 million dollars.Delivery of the first target boats is scheduled for March 2024.This contract entails the construction of Silver Ships’ AM800 RHIB.

Steps To Take Now For New Maritime Infrastructure Funding Opportunities

Much has been said both in Congress and by the current administration of the need to restore and enhance our nation’s transportation infrastructure, including its maritime transportation infrastructure. Recent legislation, such as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law), the Inflation Reduction Act, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year (FY) 2023, and the related appropriations acts, has shown that Congress is ready to provide substantial funding in support of these stated goals.

Dredging Companies Keeping a Close Eye on New Infrastructure Dollars

For dredging company executives, the recently passed $550 billion federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) sits like the proverbial Horn-o’-Plenty, ready to disgorge billions of federal dollars for maritime, port, harbor, coastal, inland waterways and flood projects, many of which will require dredging. This is a really big deal because this new money will go toward existing projects, work that’s been on the books, so to speak, but, until now, couldn’t be funded.

However readers might define “normal”, 2020 was anything but. But the business of rigid inflatable boats (RIB) has been going at full throttle.Matthew Velluto, Director of Business Development and Marketing at RIBCRAFT USA, based in Marblehead, Mass., described a business moving steadily ahead, though it’s had to weave and bob at times during 2020. “We’ve been able to stay open throughout 2020, with no disruptions on our side,” though he acknowledged hiccups further down in the company’s supply chain. He explains that the business was deemed to be “essential”.

New Patrol Boat Delivered in Minnesota

Lake Assault Boats said it has delivered a 28-foot rescue vessel to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Water Patrol Unit located in Minneapolis, Minn. Purchased from the General Services Administration (GSA) Schedule, the vessel will assist in rescue and recovery operations along the Mississippi River. The vessel is powered by a pair of Mercury Verado 300 hp engines with digital throttle, shift and power steering, as well as the Mercury Joystick Piloting and Skyhook Digital Anchoring systems.

DHS Opens Headquarters on St. Elizabeths Campus

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Dan Tangherlini has officially opened the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Consolidated Headquarters campus with a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the newly built U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters building. The opening of the new facility marks the completion of the first phase of the consolidation project on St. Elizabeths west campus. “Today, we take a major step forward in making our ‘One DHS’ vision a reality,” said Secretary Napolitano. “We are proud to provide the U.S. Coast Guard with a facility that will support the important work they do for the American people,” said GSA Administrator Dan Tangherlini.

Art Anderson Awarded Port of Portland Contract

Art Anderson Associates, a Bremerton-based multidisciplinary engineering services firm, was recently awarded a contract for On-Call Naval Architect Design Services with the Navigation Division of the Port of Portland. The Navigation Division owns and operates a fleet of vessels and barges, including the Dredge Oregon, and has retained the firm to provide naval architecture and marine engineering services in support of fleet maintenance and operations. While the firm has maintained a presence in the Portland area for many years, providing facilities construction management services on behalf of the U.S. General Services Administration, it is only recently that it has focused on doing more naval architecture and marine work in the region.

BRP $10m Contract for Evinrude Engines

BRP has been awarded a $10m contract from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) for its Evinrude multi-fuel engines (MFE). The Evinrude 55 MFE engines with an impeller equipped jet model pump will repower their fleet of F470 Zodiac boats / Combat Rubber Raiding Craft (CRRC) used during small craft operations. The strict procurement requirements of the USMC to secure non-gasoline burning outboard engines led directly to BRP. In accordance with the Department of Defense mandates, these engines must be able to operate using available battlefield fuels and to operate from naval shipping without the need for gasoline. Smart Card Initiative to Promote Maritime Security

The Ship Operations Cooperative Program (SOCP) Co-chairmen, CAPT Lee Kincaid and CAPT Robert Sheen, announced the SOCP’s plans for developing SOCP’s Maritime Smart Card pilot project at its October meeting in Norfolk, VA. The pilot project, jointly sponsored by the SOCP and the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and led by SOCP Working Group Chair, CAPT Charles Pillsbury of MITAGS, will use SOCP and MARAD matching funds. The General Services Administration (GSA), experts in smart card technology development, was commissioned to develop a maritime smart card requirements analysis using information and data gathered from joint planning meetings comprised of a cross-section of the maritime industry and the Coast Guard. GSA will also assist with project implementation.

CMTI Approved As GSA Supplier to U.S. Government Agencies

MITAGS/PMI Awarded GSA Contract

The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS), Linthicum Heights, Md. and the Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI), Seattle, Wash. have been awarded a five year contract by the General Services Administration (GSA) to provide products and services to the federal government. Under GSA Program, MITAGS/PMI will provide over 270 courses, programs, and services to agencies of the Federal Government.

Marine Patrol Adds New Boat to the Fleet

The Savannah-Chatham Police Marine Patrol has taken delivery of a 27-ft. Workskiff Harbor Security boat. The boat, obtained through a federal grant from the Transportation Security Administration, will be used to patrol the abundance of waterways throughout Chatham County, including security duty along the Savannah River waterfront. The Marine Patrol regularly patrols the local waterways, working with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the United States Coast Guard, providing harbor enforcement and providing an extra layer of security for Savannah's busy port. Accordingly, the Marine Patrol investigates waterway and marine-related accidents and/or crimes. The unit also enforces all the safe-boating laws of the State of Georgia.

BrightStar Gets $850M Navy Contract

Application service provider BrightStar Information Technology Group Inc on Monday said it was selected by Science & Engineering Associates Inc (SEA) as a subcontractor in a recently awarded contract valued up to $850 million. The contract is with the U.S. Navy Information Technology Center, in New Orleans Louisiana and will be administered by GSA's Federal Technology Service. BrightStar is one of several team members that will provide consulting resources to the project over the next five years. The award was made to SEA's wholly owned unit SEA Information Services Inc. using SEA's General Services Administration Schedule 70 Information Technology contract.

GSA Auctions Perfect Storm Rescue Vessel

A former U.S. Coast Guard cutter whose heroic rescues garnered notice in the movie, The Perfect Storm, made its debut on the U.S. General Services Administration auction Web site, GSA Auctions(TM), http://www.gsaauctions.gov, last week, after spending more than six months without a permanent home. Reported to the U.S. General Services Administration as excess by the U.S. Coast Guard in January 1994, the decommissioned Tamaroa was initially housed at New York's Intrepid Sea Air Museum until 1997. It was later housed at the Hudson River Park Conservancy until 2000. The Tamaroa is now at New York City Harbor in New York. The Tamaroa was originally the U.S. Navy commissioned vessel USS Zuni, a 205-ft. salvage tug.

Telenor Satellite Services Awarded Contract

Telenor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway has received a General Services Administration (GSA) Federal Technology Service (FTS) contract to provide a wide variety of mobile and fixed satellite communications products and services to the United States government. Under the provisions of the indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract, known as SATCOM-II, government agencies and authorized government contractors can continue to purchase services directly from Telenor Satellite Services. A number Telenor's service partners were also among the companies awarded a GSA FTS SATCOM-II contract.

Moose Boats Delivers Patrol Vessel

Moose Boats has delivered another Moose M2-37 security and patrol vessel to the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, Benicia, Calif. This is the second delivery of a two-boat contract that was awarded through GSA (General Services Administration) by the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration (MarAd). The Suisun Bay Fleet consists of dry cargo ships, tankers, military auxiliaries and other types of reserve ships in the custody of the MarAd. The Moose M2-37s will be used intensively for security patrol operations up to 16-hours-a-day, seven days per week in the Suisun Bay. The Moose M2-37 is a 37.5 ft. all-aluminum jet powered catamaran with twin Cummins 380 hp turbo diesels and is propelled by Hamilton 292 water jets.

Hearing on FY2007 Budgets for USCG and FMC

The Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure conducted a hearing on the US Coast Guard and Federal Maritime Commission FY2007 Budget Requests. Chairman LoBiondo (R-NJ) noted that the budget request would decrease funds available for USCG operations, as compared with the current year. The funding request for the FMC represents an increase of approximately 5.9% over the current year. ‘Perfect Storm’ Vessel Nets $60,075 at GSA Auction

The auction of a former U.S. Coast Guard cutter closed recently with a winning bid of more than $60,000 placed through GSA Auctions, the U.S. General Services Administration’s auction Web site. Tamaroa made its debut on the site on March 14. Bidding began immediately and eventually included as many as 12 interested parties. After more than two weeks, the auction closed on March 29 with a high bid of $60,075 placed by Maritime Equipment & Sales, Inc., an Alabama-based company. GSA completed the sale of Tamaroa on April 3, 2001. Originally the USS Zuni, a naval salvage tug during World War II, Tamaroa was later commissioned into the Coast Guard where it served for more than 50 years in search and rescue and law enforcement missions.
