Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. launched Dorothy Day, the third of three new Staten Island Ollis Class ferries, on Friday, March 26, at its Allanton shipyard in Panama City, Fla.The three 320-foot Ollis Class double-ended 4,500 passenger ferries are being built for the City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division. Gladding-Hearn shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation has delivered a second 70-foot tactical response vessel to New York City’s Harbor Patrol Unit. The two sister-ships were part of a five-boat order from the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Measuring 68.8 feet on deck, with a 19-foot beam and 3.8-foot draft, the new high-speed, Tactical Response Vessel features C. Raymond Hunt’s deep-V hull and a “squared-off” bow, with fendering and knees installed above the main deck to facilitate bow landings.

Miami Man Convicted for Obstruction of Justice and False Statements for Certifying Ships Safe for Sea. A federal jury in Miami yesterday convicted a Miami-based ship surveyor for lying to the Coast Guard and for falsely certifying the safety of ships at sea, announced Ignacia S. Moreno, Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division at the Department of Justice; Wifredo A. Ferrer, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; Rear Admiral William D. Baumgartner, Commander, 7th Coast Guard District; and Jonathan Sall, Special Agent in Charge, U.S.

A former U.S. Coast Guard cutter whose heroic rescues garnered notice in the movie, The Perfect Storm, made its debut on the U.S. General Services Administration auction Web site, GSA Auctions(TM), http://www.gsaauctions.gov, last week, after spending more than six months without a permanent home. Reported to the U.S. General Services Administration as excess by the U.S. Coast Guard in January 1994, the decommissioned Tamaroa was initially housed at New York's Intrepid Sea Air Museum until 1997. It was later housed at the Hudson River Park Conservancy until 2000. The Tamaroa is now at New York City Harbor in New York. The Tamaroa was originally the U.S. Navy commissioned vessel USS Zuni, a 205-ft. salvage tug.

Royal Caribbean International announced that the line's third and final Freedom-class ship will be named Independence of the Seas. The ship, currently under construction at Aker Yards in Turku, Finland, is set to make her debut in May 2008. She will follow Liberty of the Seas, which makes her entrance into New York City harbor May 3, 2007. At 160,000 GRT and holding 3,634 guests double-occupancy, Independence of the Seas will share the title of the world's largest cruise ship with Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas. Beginning May 19, 2007, Liberty of the Seas will sail alternating seven- night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries year-round from Miami.

The auction of a former U.S. Coast Guard cutter closed recently with a winning bid of more than $60,000 placed through GSA Auctions, the U.S. General Services Administration’s auction Web site. Tamaroa made its debut on the site on March 14. Bidding began immediately and eventually included as many as 12 interested parties. After more than two weeks, the auction closed on March 29 with a high bid of $60,075 placed by Maritime Equipment & Sales, Inc., an Alabama-based company. GSA completed the sale of Tamaroa on April 3, 2001. Originally the USS Zuni, a naval salvage tug during World War II, Tamaroa was later commissioned into the Coast Guard where it served for more than 50 years in search and rescue and law enforcement missions.

With the New York City harbor as a backdrop, on August 8 the public got a sneak preview of the new Meridian line, which will be introduced during the 2003 model year. William J. Barrington, president of Meridian Yachts, served as master of ceremonies at the event, which was held at Chelsea Piers. Joining Barrington for the unveiling and ribbon cutting were George W. Buckley, chairman and chief executive officer of Brunswick Corporation, and Dustan E. McCoy, president of the Brunswick Boat Group. Meridian thus joins the ranks of other leading Brunswick Boat Group yacht brands, including Sea Ray, Hatteras and Sealine. The Brunswick Boat Group is a unit of Brunswick Corporation. The product lineup will include seven models ranging from 34 to 58 ft.
