Wood Group Kenny Wins 2 Contracts from Petrobras

Wood Group Kenny (WGK) has won two contracts with a total value of over $2 million with Brazilian operator Petrobras. In the first, WGK has begun a conceptual engineering study of two alternatives of pipeline heating systems for the Petrobras pre-salt Lapa field, water-heated pipe-in-pipe (WH-PiP) and electrically trace-heated pipe-in-pipe (ETH-PiP). The project aims to provide Petrobras and its partners, BG and Repsol Sinopec, with the basis to evaluate the technical feasibility of the south west area tieback on the field and determining the most cost-effective technology. The application of active heating pipeline technology would be a first in a pre-salt environment.

Ugly Ducklings & Steaming the Way to Victory in WWII

The S.S. Patrick Henry was the first of the Emergency Class Liberty ships to be built and launched. The famous quote by its namesake helped to give this class of ships its name. (Photo Credit: Library of Congress)

The design and construction of WWII Liberty cargo ships revolutionized shipbuilding by overhauling the blueprint process and standardizing on commonality of parts, welding, pre-fabrication and assembly line construction. Give me Liberty, or give me death!” a rallying cry of the Revolutionary War, got a second act in World War II. “Built by the mile and chopped off by the yard,” Roosevelt promised the no-frills Liberties would form a “bridge of ships” across the Atlantic. And they did. An exaggeration perhaps, but in truth, the Liberty wasn’t much to write home about.

ExxonMobil Helps Danaos Extends Piston Overhaul

MV CSCL Europe’s 12-cylinder DOOSAN-MAN B&W K98MC-C engine is lubricated with Mobilgard 570, a cylinder oil formulated by ExxonMobil to reduce piston wear and deposits, and extend piston overhaul intervals in two-stroke marine diesel engines.

Engineers from Athens-based Danaos Shipping together with ExxonMobil, reportedly extended the overhaul interval required for a piston in a DOOSAN-MAN B&W 12-cylinder K98MC-C engine from 16,000 hours to 42,575 hours. A recent overhaul revealed that cylinder number 11 was in remarkably good condition, with a negligible liner wear rate. The achievement took place aboard the containership MV CSCL Europe, which is chartered to China Shipping Container Lines. Representatives from Danaos Shipping and ExxonMobil systematically monitored the condition of the engine throughout the overhauling process.
