Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has divested its pumps business to Solix Group, a Scandinavian investment company with offices in Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden.According to a press release from the marine technology giant, Wärtsilä Pumps has belonged to the Wärtsilä Marine Solutions organisation and became part of the company along with the acquisition of Hamworthy in 2012. The Wärtsilä Pumps business recorded sales of approximately 50 MEUR in 2017.The divestment will enable Wärtsilä to devote greater focus to its Smart Marine vision. This is based on the rapid introduction of new technologies, which are creating unprecedented levels of efficiency and cost savings.

Electrochlorination equipment supplier De Nora announced that Dr. Stelios Kyriacou has been appointed as General Manager of its BALPURE Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) business unit. Dr. Kyriacou joins De Nora Water Technologies from Wärtsilä, where he managed the research, development, design and certification of the full Wärtsilä BWMS range. He previously undertook the same role at Hamworthy from 2009 until its acquisition by Wärtsilä and held roles at Hatlapa Marine Equipment. Dr.

GasLog Ltd has appointed Bruno Larsen as head of floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) development. Larsen has previous experience in both the LNG and FSRU sectors, and will take the lead in the company’s commercial FSRU activities. He has previously served in senior roles for WorleyParsons, BW Offshore, Hamworthy, Hoegh LNG and Total. GasLog is currently evaluating a number of FSRU opportunities as well as undertaking a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study at the Keppel shipyard in Singapore. The study is focused on the potential conversion of GasLog’s and GasLog Partners LP’s existing steam and tri-fuel diesel electric LNG carriers into FSRU vessels. Larsen said: “I am delighted to join GasLog, one of the leading LNG transportation companies in the world.

"The World", the largest, private, residential ship on the seas, will be retrofitted with a Wärtsilä Advanced Wastewater treatment system and a Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum system for navigation and external communication purposes. The Wärtsilä Advanced Wastewater solution will replace an existing system and keep the vessel in full compliance with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) requirements concerning the prevention of pollution from ships. The ship is owned by its residents and is managed by ROW Management Ltd based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in November. The equipment is scheduled for delivery in April, 2016.

Over the past three centuries as the sun began to set on the British power, resilient U.K. with its pioneering characteristics began its voyage of transformation to become a world-class maritime services center, with one of the largest clusters of marine insurance, ship finance, law, classification societies, ship broking, education and consultancy organizations. Significantly, two factors were responsible for this change. The first being marine transport, since it was the only point of access to the British Isles, and the second was the maritime trade and naval power that have had a great impact on the maritime sector influencing the country’s economy for several centuries.

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 will be fitted with a Wärtsilä advanced wastewater treatment system, enabling the cruise ship to comply with the IMO’s requirements concerning the prevention of pollution from ships. The contract, awarded by Cunard Line during the third quarter of2014, will see the installation of two Wärtsilä’s Hamworthy Membrane BioReactor (MBR) systems to replace existing onboard solutions which are now due for replacement. A total of 22 bulk carriers, being built by Yangzhou Guoyu Shipbuilding Co. Ltd in China for Singapore based Pioneer Marine, will feature Wärtsilä Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS). The Wärtsilä systems will enable the vessels to comply fully with the IMO's ballast water convention. The contracts were finalized in August. Each of the 38,000 DWT vessels will be fitted with two Wärtsilä AQUARIUS UV BWMS, and the scope of supply includes also the commissioning and sea trials of the equipment.

Are shipowners prepared to enter SECA zones? Due to existing regulations on air exhaust emissions from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and with the European Union working towards an alignment with IMO MARPOL Annex VI, the marine industry will need to choose a path on how to achieve compliance, a choice that will have tremendous impact on shipping. Legislation has already had an effect on the fuel markets in regulated areas, as fuel prices are expected to increase even further in 2015 when the 0.1% fuel sulfur limit enters into force.

Over the past couple of decades, natural gas (NG) has become a fuel of choice for power generation. One way of increasing the availability of NG is through the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Global LNG trade is expected to grow by 30% in the coming few years. In connection to LNG production growth, receiving and re-gasification capacity must grow as well. A substantial part of this growth will come from the development of small-mid scale LNG receiving and re-gas terminals.

Wärtsilä is participating for the first time in ADIPEC, the currently running Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, for the first time, and is showcasing their Gas Reformer technology amongst other related hi-tech products. Also present at the event is Wärtsilä’s established Valves brand, which has demonstrated its pumps and valves capabilities in past ADIPEC events as part of the Hamworthy brand. The Wärtsilä GasReformer addresses the common challenges of gas, including low methane content and number, fluctuating gas quality and the presence of higher hydrocarbons. By converting higher hydrocarbons in natural or associated gas to increase fuel gas’ Methane Number, the GasReformer improves the Wärtsilä DualFuel engine’s performance and fuel flexibility.

Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply a combined inert gas generator and gas combustion unit for two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers being built at the DSME yard in South Korea. The ships will be owned by Canada based Teekay Corporation, one of the world's largest marine energy transportation, storage and production companies. The contract was signed in May 2013. The concept of combining the two systems was developed by Wärtsilä in cooperation with DSME, and the system burns the boil off gas using an already existing Wärtsilä Moss inert gas generator.

Work has been completed on schedule in preparation for the installation by Babcock of a first of class state-of-the-art Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) on HMS Ocean. This represents a significant proportion of the vessel’s current upgrade package and is an integral part of the 15-month overhaul program underway at Babcock’s Devonport Royal Dockyard. The new MBR replaces the ship’s existing 15-year-old sewage treatment system and will be capable of processing both waste water and sewage (black and grey water, galley, laundry, sink and shower waste).

Wärtsilä has developed the GasReformer, a product which converts associated gas, which is often flared, into usable fuel for its dual-fuel engines. When producing oil, associated gas is also released from the deposits. In many places this gas is commonly burnt off in gas flares, a waste of energy and a pollutant of the atmosphere. In addition to useful methane, this gas consists of heavier hydrocarbons including ethane, propane and butane. The composition of the gas typically also vary during the production phase of the oil field.

Wärtsilä is to supply inert gas systems for a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) on Norway's Heidrun offshore oil & gas field, and for two supporting shuttle tankers. The FSU is owned by Statoil, the Norwegian state owned energy company, and the tankers by AET Tanker Holdings, the Singapore based petroleum transportation company. All three vessels are being built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea. The Wärtsilä contract with SHI was signed in February 2013. Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for October, 2013.
