One hundred years ago tomorrow (January 4) the sinking of a hospital ship by an infamous German U-boat commander caused outrage across Britain. Wilhelm Werner broke international law when he fired on HMHS Rewa, killing four seafarers and causing the vessel to sink into the Bristol Channel, 19 miles off Hartland Point. The Rewa - which had served in the Gallipoli campaign - was transporting walking wounded from Malta to Wales when it was torpedoed. The ship took two hours to sink, which gave those on board time to get into lifeboats. The survivors arrived in Swansea, where they received support from international maritime charity the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society. Reverend R.G.

A cargo vessel that went adrift off the west coast of Cornwall and Devon after encountering engine difficulties is currently under tow, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) reported. The 91-meter-long vessel reported that it was drifting without power y Thursday just after 12:30 p.m. The ship is carrying a cargo of scrap metal, and all seven crew have remained on board. The vessel is currently 5 nautical miles north west off Hartland Point heading to Lundy Island, and the Appledore and Padstow RNLI lifeboats are currently on scene along with the Dutch war ship HNLMS De Ruyter. The HNLMS De Ruyter is now towing the vessel to Lundy Island, North Devon where the vessel can anchor and shelter from the weather. Bremen Fighter, a tug from Holyhead Harbour is also on its way.

The latest vessel to be constructed at Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries Ltd., was officially christened “Hartland Point” by Fiona De Pencier, the wife of Mr Theo de Pencier, Managing Director of Bibby Distribution Ltd. Hartland Point is the first of two RoRo ferries under construction by Harland and Wolff for the AWSR Shipping Ltd., as part of the Strategic Sealift Service for the U.K. Ministry of Defense. Harland and Wolff Group PLC has confirmed that, against the backdrop of prevailing market conditions, it is to consolidate future operations into a single technically-led, project management organization. Accordingly, the company has entered into formal consultation with the relevant Trade Union officials in connection with the issuing of a 90 day protective notice of intention to effect a redundancy program (an HR1) covering 265 core employees (197 operators and 68 staff). It is the intention to have the workforce reductions completed by mid-January 2003. Despite the financial constraints of its current circumstances, the Company will seek to offer the best available redundancy package to individuals and, to that end, aims to implement an enhanced voluntary redundancy package.
