Ensuring Public Safety - Hazmat Transport

Inspectors with several federal and State of Hawaii agencies joined forces to enforce hazardous materials shipping requirements and standards in several key Hawaii ports. The U.S. Coast Guard helped organized the 2008 Multi Agency Strike Force Operation (MASFO 2008) on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island, Nov. 12-14. Hawaii – Urgent Superferry Barge Repairs

According to a report from the Honolulu Advertiser, Hawaii’s state Department of Transportation plans to spend $414,284 for immediate repairs to the Hawaii Superferry barge at Kahului Harbor to prevent a "potential disastrous and life-threatening" leak. (Source: The Honolulu Advertiser)

Judge Approves Security Zone in Hawaii Harbor

Opponents of the Hawaii Superferry lost a round in court, according to an Associated Press report, when U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor refused to block the U.S. Coast Guard from enforcing a security zone in Kauai’s Nawiliwili Harbor when the vessel resumes service to the port. The Coast Guard established the zone and set aside a designated protest area off Kalapaki Beach after a flotilla of protesters prevented the ferry from landing Aug. 27. A separate security zone is to extend 100 yards around the ferry. The ferry, designed to carry more than 800 passengers and 250 cars between major Hawaiian islands, has been anchored in Honolulu Harbor since the protest…
