Surface Navy Association (SNA) names two new Vice Presidents to focus on Navy and Coast Guard Enlisted membersThe Surface Navy Association has established two new Vice President positions created to specifically focus on providing tailored programs, professional development and other outreach initiatives dedicated to better serve our Navy and Coast Guard Enlisted members. The Association’s board of directors has approved Retired Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Charles “Skip” Bowen and Retired Fleet Master Chief (AW/SW) JoAnn Marie Ortloff to the new positions.Bowen joined the Coast Guard in 1978 and served for 32 years. A lifelong cutterman, Bowen commanded five separate Coast Guard units ashore and afloat.

Peeling paint sidelined USCG’s newest cutter, 'Bernard C. Three months after its commissioning, the fast response cutter (FRC) Bernard C. Webber was back on land to repair chunks of top coat literally peeling from the ship’s hull, reports 'Navy Times'. The majority of the top coat remained in place until the ship got back to dry dock for a repaint; the largest piece to come off was 18 square feet located near the stern on the port side of the ship, Charles “Skip” Bowen, program manager for FRC's at the builders, Bollinger Shipyards told 'Navy Times'.

Coast Guard officials announced Friday that the first Sentinel-class cutter will bear the name Bernard C. Webber in honor of the legendary Coast Guard member. Previously designated to be named the Coast Guard Cutter Sentinel, the cutter Bernard C. Webber will be the first of the service’s new 153-ft patrol cutters. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen approved the change of the cutter’s name to allow this class of vessels to be named after outstanding enlisted members who demonstrated exceptional heroism in the line of duty.

Campa Jr. addressed enlisted service members at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain July 1. Campa focused on a wide range of topics, including individual augmentee (IA) missions, the importance of the Physical Readiness Test, rating mergers and off-duty education. The MCPON also stressed the importance of leadership. “I firmly believe that the quality of a Sailor’s life is directly tied to the quality of their leadership,” said Campa. “As I go out and visit commands to see how they’re doing, the commands that are doing very well are well lead. Those that are struggling have challenges in leadership.
