Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation on Thursday announced the receipt of five dredging contracts totaling $173.7 million. Gulf Coast shipbuilder Conrad Shipyard was awarded a contract to build a new steel spud barge for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.Conrad was the sole bidder for the contract, which was awarded by the Corps' Philadelphia district. Under the $9,106,800 firm-fixed-price award, Conrad will design, construct, test, and deliver the new barge.Work will be performed in Morgan City, La., with an estimated completion date of April 14, 2025.

Panama City, Fla. based Eastern Shipbuilding Group has been awarded a contract to design and build a new hopper dredge for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.The $256,955,264 firm-fixed-price contract will see Eastern design and build the new medium-class hopper dredge (MCHD) for scheduled delivery in August 2027. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a contract opportunity on January 25 starting the process to acquire a new Medium Class Hopper Dredge (MCHD) to replace the current dredge McFarland. The new MCHD will be part of the USACE minimum fleet and operate for the Philadelphia District. The January 25 notice is a draft solicitation published to seek industry comments which will inform the Corps’ development of a subsequent “formal solicitation,” likely to be released on or about April 1. In its notice, the Corps emphasizes that the draft is not an invitation for bid.

(AAM) was recently awarded a contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for the design and construction of a new hydrofoil supported aluminum catamaran survey vessel. The vessel will primarily perform survey missions and some dive operations in support of dredging work planned within the Corps’ Philadelphia District. USACE has designated that the new catamaran will replace the aging survey boat, Shuman, which currently fills the mission critical role. The 68’ x 26’ custom aluminum catamaran will be designed by Teknicraft Design, Ltd.

The US Department of Defense informs that Norfolk Dredging Co., Chesapeake, Virginia, was awarded an $11,787,279 firm-fixed-price contract for maintenance dredging of the inland waterway Delaware River to Chesapeake Bay, Delaware and Maryland. Work will be performed in Maryland with an estimated completion date of Feb. 10, 2015. Fiscal 2014 operations and maintenance (Army) funds in the amount of $11,787,279 are being obligated at award. The Corps of Engineers Memphis District Ensley Engineer Yard (EEY), in partnership with the Corps of Engineers Marine Design Center (MDC) in Philadelphia, Pa., completed the lengthening of the Dredge Hurley by 48-feet. The project increased the dredge’s length from 305 to 353 feet, making it one of the largest vessels on the river and increased the dredge’s dredging depth from 40 to a maximum of 75 feet. Gulf Island Fabrication, Inc., Houma, La., was awarded on May 6 a $9,410,156 firm-fixed-price contract to obtain marine services to modify the dredge Potter.  The modification includes replacing the existing upper deckhouse and pilothouse areas.  This project requires engineering and design, fabrication, testing, and delivery services to provide the required modifications.  The dredge Potter is in support of dredging efforts for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District.  Work is to be performed in Houma, La., with an estimated completion date of July 23, 2011.  Thirteen bids were solicited with three bids received.  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, Philadelphia, Pa., is the contracting activity (W912BU-10-C-0019).

Governor Edward G. Rendell hailed the signing of a historic agreement that will officially begin a five-year, $379 million project to deepen the ’s shipping channel, calling it a major milestone in ongoing efforts to expand commerce and enhance economic development in the region. The partnership agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) represents a significant step forward in a 15-year effort to deepen the river’s shipping channel. The agreement was signed by Assistant Secretary of the Army John Paul Woodley Jr. and PRPA Chairman John H. Estey. “I consider this to be the most important project in the history of the ,” said Governor Rendell.

The dustpan dredge Potter, the Corps last and longest-serving steam-powered dredge, helped keep the Mississippi River open to navigation for almost 70 years. Now she is back home at the St. Louis District Service Base after a $20 million repowering project by the district and the Corps' Marine Design Center (MDC). Halter Marine, Inc., of Gulfport, Miss, was the contractor. She departed Halter's New Orleans shipyard Sept. 29 with the same overall profile (minus smokestacks) and capabilities, but with an all-new stern and a diesel-electric power plant. Named for Brig. Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders are building a highspeed catamaran ferry for San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation district. Designed by International Catamaran Designs (INCAT) of Sydney Australia, this will be Nichols Brothers 27th U.S. built highspeed catamaran. The vessel will be 139 ft. overall with a 34-ft. beam and draft of 9 ft. The individual hulls will have a beam of 9 ft.. A 37-knot speed is predicted with four 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50-M2 main engines delivering 1,600 hp each at 1800 rpm. Each IMO emission certified engine will drive a Hamilton model 571 water jet through a ZF Marine BU 460D marine gear. Electrical service will be provided by a 125 kW generator set powered by a Cummins Marine 6CT8.3DM engine.
