Robert (Bob) Maxwell, managing director of Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement Singapore (BSM), has died after a three-year battle with cancer, the maritime services company said. "It is with the greatest sadness that BSM delivers the heart-breaking news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Bob Maxwell, Managing Director of the Singapore office. Bob left us on Monday, 26th March after a long struggle with cancer," said a statement from the company. He had a remarkable career in shipping and his contributions to the industry were formidable. Bob trained as a Mechanical Engineer at Southampton College of Higher Education. He started his career at sea in 1988 as a 2nd Engineer and in 1993 became a Chief Engineer officer sailing on bulk carriers ranging from 149,000 to 186,000 tonnes.

BSM announced the passing of dear friend and colleague Robert (Bob) Maxwell, Managing Director of the Singapore office. Bob passed away on Monday, 26th March after a long struggle with cancer. He had a remarkable career in shipping and his contributions to the industry were formidable. Bob trained as a Mechanical Engineer at Southampton College of Higher Education. He started his career at sea in 1988 as a 2nd Engineer and in 1993 became a Chief Engineer officer sailing on bulk carriers ranging from 149,000 to 186,000 tonnes. A few years later, in 1996, he joined Hanseatic Shipping as a Chief Engineer sailing on large containerships and gas carriers. Bob was passionate about shipping, so he continued his journey within the industry devoting his time to his professional development.

When it comes to fishing vessel safety, the mission is clear, says Sandra Allnutt of the International Maritime Organization (IMO): enhance safety to save lives. “We want to reduce loss of life in one of the most dangerous professions in the world, and we want to enhance safety on board fishing vessels,” said Ms Allnutt, Head of Maritime Technology in IMO’s Maritime Safety Division, following a regional seminar, in Cape Town, South Africa, to promote ratification and implementation of a key fishing vessel safety treaty known as the Cape Town Agreement of 2012. “This Agreement, once fully ratified, in force and implemented, will be an internationally binding agreement which will facilitate better control of fishing vessel safety by flag, port and coastal States.

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has made a new appointment to the role of Secretary of State’s Representative (SOSRep) Maritime Salvage & Intervention, which oversees the response to accidents at sea. Les Chapman has been appointed to the role and will join the Agency on Monday 21 August. He will work alongside the existing SOSRep Hugh Shaw OBE for several months, to allow a substantial transition period in this important role, and will not assume the role and responsibilities of the SOSRep until an agreed time later on in the year. The SOSRep is responsible for reducing the risk to safety and the environment arising from accidents at sea.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is not a panacea to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and its increasing use as a marine fuel could be worse for the environment than burning heavy fuel oil, said Ian Adams, the former CEO of the International Bunker Industry Association. “Whilst it is well documented that LNG is an excellent solution for reducing SOx and NOx emissions, I am dismayed to see it being promoted as a solution for reducing GHGs,” Adams said, in stark contrast to claims that the use of LNG as a marine fuel can reduce the industry’s CO2 emissions by as much as 75 percent. International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched a website for GloMEEP energy efficiency project. IMO’s continuing efforts to promote environmentally sound shipping received a boost today with the launch of Glomeep.imo.org. The new website provides important information and updates on the Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) project – a GEF-UNDP-IMO initiative that supports the uptake and implementation of energy efficiency measures for shipping, thereby reducing the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions. A key feature of the site is an information portal on energy efficiency technologies – covering areas such as machinery, propulsion and hull improvements, and energy recovery.

Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) announced it is to renew its partnership with the Institute for Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST).
