NTSB Calls for Action on Safety Following Conception Dive Boat Tragedy

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says more progress is needed on the safety recommendations it issued in the wake of the Conception dive boat tragedy.The Conception was anchored in Platts Harbor, off Santa Cruz Island, Calif., when it caught fire in the early morning of Sept. 2, 2019. The vessel burned to the waterline and sank less than 100 feet from shore. The 34 people asleep below deck were trapped in the bunk room: 33 passengers and one crew member lost their lives.Following the investigation, the NTSB issued 10 new safety recommendations: seven to the U.S.

CTV Ordered for Vineyard Wind Project in the US

Offshore wind developer Vineyard Wind on Monday announced it has signed a contract to charter a crew transfer vessel (CTV) from Massachusetts-based marine transportation company Patriot Offshore Maritime Services.The 88.5-foot (27-meter) aluminum CTV will be built at Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding in Somerset, Mass. for mid-2023 delivery. Based on an Incat Crowther catamaran design, with a beam of 29.5 feet and draft of 5.6 feet, it will be capable of carrying up to 24 technicians…

France Seizes Yacht Reportedly Belonging to Rosneft Boss Sechin

French customs have seized a yacht belonging to Rosneft boss Igor Sechin as it tried to leave the Mediterranean port of La Ciotat in a breach of EU sanctions on Russian oligarchs, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said.The move came as western states are implementing massive sanctions, including asset freezes, against Russia for invading its neighbor Ukraine. A separate nearly $600 million luxury yacht owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov has also been seized, by German authorities, Forbes reported. The 88-meter "Amore Vero" arrived in La Ciotat on Jan.3 and was due to stay there until April 1st for repairs, the finance ministry said in a statement…

Amels Launches 77m Luxury Expedition Yacht La Datcha

MOL to Renovate Nippon Maru

Japanese transport company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced that its group company Mitsui O.S.K. Passenger Line, Ltd. (MOPAS) has scheduled a major renovation of its operated cruise ship, the Nippon Maru.According to a press release from MOL Group, the project will take about 50 days from mid-February through early April 2020.The Nippon Maru was renovated in 2010 when the ship marked its 20th anniversary. Additional cabins were constructed on the sixth floor, while the new Horizon Lounge and Spa & Salon were added. Vard Delivers Ponant Cruise Vessel

The MY Roswell is as stunning technically inside as it is outsite, designed to have full electric running capabilities, supported by two diesel electric engines and large electric panels that cover the numerous horizontal surfaces of the superstructure of the vessel. A Business Park Made of Shipping Containers

Container King of Dallas has recently signed a deal with local developer Ron Sturgeon to build 38 innovative, eco-friendly, state-of-the-art commercial spaces made from shipping containers. Box Office Warehouse Suites is due to open in the Alliance commercial real estate area in Texas. Sturgeon explained the process: "We sandblast them, paint them nice and pretty, bring in a professional design firm, tastefully add paneling, floors, ceilings, windows, and carpeting, and before you know it you have industrial space perfect for small businesses, and the beauty of it all, besides being inexpensive, is its flexibility. If you need more space we simply attach another container and instantly your work space is doubled in size. "We see this as the future of construction," Sturgeon said.

Gulf Coast Shipyard Group (GCSG) has delivered the Motor Yacht Imagine. The M.Y. Imagine, a Trinity built yacht, is a 193’x 32’x 14’6” custom designed semi-displacement aluminum hull and superstructure vessel that was constructed in GCSG’s yard located in New Orleans, Louisiana. The vessel meets the highest quality yacht standards in the world. It was designed by GCSG and is ABS classed for commercial yachting service. M.Y. Imagine is designed to accommodate 12 guests and a crew of 14 including a captain.

New Innovative CNG-Electric Hybrid Ferry Texelstroom

The M/S Texelstroom is more energy efficient, cleaner and more sustainable than her predecessors. CNG-electric hybrid ferry Texelstroom features some of the latest technological developments and innovation, such as a T-shaped beam which ensures a 14 percent car capacity improvement and a CNG/Diesel Hybrid propulsion which make the ship more cost-efficient and thus more environmentally friendly, says C-Job Naval Architects, who is responsible for the vessel’s complete initial, concept and basic design. Other innovations include solar panels, peak shaving batteries and heat recovery. At 135 meters long and 28 meters wide, the new ship is 5 meters taller and wider than her predecessors, C-Job said, though the new Texelstroom is still able to dock in the same port as the Dokter Wagenmaker.

It’s no coincidence that Class standard bearer DNV GL’s incoming group chief exec, Remi Eriksen, is a former telecoms engineer who knows his way around Houston (IT) and Singapore (yards). After all, the satellite communications industry understands shipping. The reverse should also be true. Speaking ahead of his first day as CEO, Eriksen describes a future of “fast ships and slow growth” — not bandwidth growth, mind you. Satellite operators, network providers and other vendors are eying broadband for Big Data transfers.

New OSV-inspired Ferry for the Fiji Islands

In recent decades there have been great advances in design of crewboats and offshore supply vessels to meet the needs of the petroleum industry. Recently a number of nations have turned to these designs as inspiration for naval craft. Now the Government Shipping Services of the Fiji Islands have turned to a designer and a builder of offshore vessels for a new inter-island ferry. The M/V Cavigou was designed by United Ship Design of Sibu and built by Kian Juan Dockyard in Miri, also in Sarawak, Malaysia.

Burger Boat Delivers Chicago Passenger Vessel

Burger Boat Company announced the delivery of a 98-foot steel passenger vessel to Chicago's First Lady Cruises in Chicago. The vessel, Chicago’s Classic Lady, was designed by Seacraft Design, LLC of Sturgeon Bay, Wisc. Chicago’s Classic Lady departed the Burger shipyard Saturday afternoon, May 10, 2014, on her delivery voyage to the Chicago waterfront, arriving early the next morning. Built by Burger Boat Company of Manitowoc, Wisc., Chicago’s Classic Lady is powered by two Caterpillar C12 main engines and has two Caterpillar C4.4 generators.

Halieutis Fair was a Big Draw

The third edition of the Salon Halieutis in the Moroccan city of Agadir came to a close yesterday. This fair is one of the most important international forums between professionals and companies in the extractive fishing, aquaculture and assessment of marine and fishery products. It involved more than 300 exhibitors and is estimated to have been visited by 60,000 people, including professionals and public in general. Zamakona Yards was also present at the event visiting major fleet owners who repaired in our shipyards in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and putting up with the current situation of this important sector and its latest developments.

IAG Superyacht King Baby on the Water

Chinese shipyard, IAG Yachts, has successfully launched the beautiful 140-foot motor yacht King Baby, destined for an experienced yachtsman. "King Baby" is IAG Yachts' largest motoryacht build to launch so far. She stretches 140-feet while the other two yachts were 100 and 127-feet respectively. The exterior design is by a firm named REDS out of Italy. In fact, they did the interior as well. The yacht should go into charter service once completed and was built for a rather experienced American owner. This particular project had some alterations in its design/build life having ended up at 140-feet when originally it was around 5-feet shorter.

Holland America Line Wins 8 Magellan Awards

Travel Weekly magazine announced the recipients of its 2014 Magellan Awards, and Holland America Line received eight of the prestigious honors. The line won five gold awards in the categories Restaurant Design for Canaletto Small Plates, Television Commercial for “Breathtaking Meet Impeccable,” Blog for the Holland America Blog, Direct Mail for the 2014 Winter Mariner Magazine and Advertising/Marketing Campaign for Discover HAL’s Alaska. Three silver awards were bestowed on the line for Entertainment and the B.B. GOST Security System thwarts Break-in

GOST (Global Ocean Security Technologies), announced that its GOST Insight HD GPS Security System was instrumental in foiling the theft of electronics onboard a powerboat in Aventura, Florida. On the morning of October 14, 2014, Scott Patterson received a text message at 6:18 a.m. from the security system on his boat stating, “Cockpit Motion” which included a link to a ten second video showing a perpetrator in the salon of his 52-foot Sea Ray Sundancer. Patterson immediately ran to the marina while police were dispatched. An alarm scared off the intruder, thwarting the potential theft of tens of thousands of dollars worth of electronics.

Gamma Builds Customized Yacht for Andrea Bocelli

Gamma Yachts has built its most customized Gamma 20 so far, with smart design from Vripack, to opera singer Andrea Bocelli. Gamma Yachts announced the delivery of 22.1-meter M/Y Libertas, the third in its Gamma 20 ‘mini’ super yacht series. With design by Dutch company Vripack, the yacht has impressive guest space for its length overall as well as excellent fuel efficiency, the builder said. Built and designed in Holland, the yacht combines the precision and technical capabilities of the Dutch with world-class interior furnishings and materials from Italy.
