First Ship Sails after Latest Mississippi River Channel Deepening

World’s First LNG-Powered Containership Launched

General Dynamics NASSCO launched the 3,100 teu Isla Bella, the world’s first LNG-powered containership. More than 3,400 shipbuilders, their families, and others attended the special event at the San Diego-based shipyard. After christening by Sophie Sacco — wife of Michael Sacco, president of the Seafarers International Union — the 754-foot-long Isla Bella slid into San Diego Bay on the high tide at 9:10 p.m. Fireworks erupted as the ship floated. The containership, part of a two-ship contract, was built for TOTE at what is the last major yard still in existence on the US west coast. The Isla Bella was also NASSCO’s 100th launch. The 233 m long ships, equipped with MAN engines, are scheduled to operate between Jacksonville, (Jaxport) Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico, NASSCO said.

Jaxport Welcomes Consolidation of Crowley's Jacksonville Operations

JAXPORT’s Board of Directors today unanimously approved an expanded, long-term lease with Crowley Liner Services Inc. Under the agreement, Crowley will relocate its Puerto Rican service from its private terminal along Jacksonville’s harbor to JAXPORT’s Talleyrand Marine Terminal and expand its current leasehold in preparation for deployment of the company’s two new LNG-powered Commitment-Class ships. Crowley Liner Services Inc. is a subsidiary of the 123-year-old Crowley Maritime Corporation, a privately held family and employee-owned company headquartered in Jacksonville since 1975.

TOTE Inks LNG Supply Deal

Partnership represents the start of LNG adoption as a marine fuel in the United States. Pivotal LNG, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of AGL Resources Inc., and WesPac Midstream LLC have signed a long-term agreement with TOTE, Inc. to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel the company’s two new state-of-the-art containerships. Pivotal LNG and WesPac are constructing a new natural gas liquefaction facility in Jacksonville, Fla., addressing the growing demand for LNG in the southeast.

Jacksonville Adds PORTS Real-time Data System

Officials from NOAA, the Jacksonville Marine Transportation Exchange, and the Jacksonville Port Authority officially dedicated a new information system today which will increase safety for ships using the St. Johns River. The system, called Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System (PORTS), provides real-time information on water levels, currents, meteorological conditions, and under-bridge clearance, giving users critical information when traveling through the river. The St. Johns River in Jacksonville will become the 23rd location to use the system and is the second largest PORTS ever established. “Our nation’s ports are critical cogs in our country’s economic engine,” said Kathryn D. Sullivan, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.

Container Shipping Line Wins Service & Reliability Award

Horizon Lines, Inc., one of the nation's leading domestic ocean shipping companies, has been awarded the "2011 Platinum Carrier Award" by home improvement retailer Lowe's Companies Inc. Horizon Lines is the only Jones Act ocean carrier to receive a 2011 award from Lowe's for domestic ocean transportation service. The 2011 award marks the sixth consecutive year that Horizon Lines has received Lowe's Platinum Carrier Award, and the 11th consecutive year that Horizon Lines has been honored with a Lowe's award for providing consistently superior service.

Horizon Lines Names Vice President for Puerto Rico

San Juan - Horizon Lines Inc. has named Richard Rodriguez, Vice President and General Manager, Puerto Rico. In this new role, Rodriguez will be responsible for all on-island sales and operations activity, local labor, security, as well as government relations. Formerly, he was Port Manager in San Juan for the company. Rodriguez reports to Brian Taylor, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "Richard spent his entire career in the Puerto Rico logistics arena," Taylor said. Horizon Lines 15-Day Transit Time for Cargo

Horizon Lines (NYSE:HRZ) announced it has instituted a 15-day transit schedule for containerized cargo shipped from Shanghai to Kansas City with its new International service. The company launched the Five-Star Express (FSX) trans-Pacific ocean service between China and the United States in December, and selected Kansas City as a key hub for its express ocean-rail intermodal package. Horizon Line to Launch U.S. Inland Express Service

Horizon Launches Int’l Non-Vessel Ocean Shipping

Horizon Logistics, LLC, has launched an international ocean shipping service to offer supply chain solutions to U.S. importers and exporters. Horizon Logistics has been licensed by the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) to operate as a non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC). As an NVOCC, Horizon Logistics is able to issue its own bills of lading and public tariffs, utilizing the service of vessel operating partners. The first shipments moving under this new service were loaded during the week of Jan.
