Canadian and U.S. forces team up with Frontier Sentinel

Approximately 3,000 personnel from Canadian and U.S. military forces and government civilian agencies will participate in the full-scale training exercise Frontier Sentinel (EX FS 08-2), which will focus on maritime homeland security from June 9-13, 2008. The exercise will take place in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, off the coasts of northeastern , specifically the waterways of and . "This exercise tests and validates the ability of forces, Canadian forces, and civilian agencies to work together to our mutual benefit," said the Exercise Director, Capt. Christian Haugen. "We have plans and procedures in place -- with Frontier Sentinel, we can see what works, and what needs polishing.

Horizon Lines Hosts Army National Guard Exercise

Horizon Lines of Puerto Rico, a subsidiary of Horizon Lines, Inc. hosted a series of exercises conducted by The Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team (WMD-CST) at the company's port facility in Puerto Nuevo, Puerto Rico on December 4th. The team consists of members of military, law enforcement, and civilian agencies and entities including The Army National Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Federal Bureau of Investigations and members of Horizon Lines'safety and security management team. There are currently 32 such Civil Support Teams established nationwide. aboard a containership. The vessel Horizon Producer was utilized for the drill and members of the crew and terminal personnel also participated.

Model Port Partners Sign Charter

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port hosted a Model Port Boston meeting in which the project's partners signed a charter outlining its mission and goal. The model port project, officially named Boston - A Model Port, is one of several Operation Safe Commerce projects underway across the country. In Boston, the project represents a coalition of state, local and federal agencies, and private sector businesses united to enhance port and transportation security while facilitating commerce. The model port project gathers and provides information regarding current security and safety practices in supply chains and critical port activities; assists in collaborative efforts to develop and share best practices for the safe and secure movement of peopleā€¦

Ship Operator Pleads Guilty and Sentenced

IMC Shipping Co. Pte. Ltd. (IMC), pleaded guilty in federal court in Alaska to a three-count information alleging two violations of the Refuse Act for the illegal discharge of oil and soy beans and one violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act for killing of thousands of migratory birds that resulted from the grounding of the M/V Selendang Ayu on Dec. 8, 2004 in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. IMC was subsequently sentenced to pay a criminal penalty of $10m. The grounding of the M/V Selendang Ayu spilled approximately 340,000 gallons of bunker fuel, as well as several thousands of tons of soy beans, into the Bering Sea in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge in the Aleutian Islands resulting in the deaths of several thousand migratory birds.
