NAVSEA Conducts Flyaway Saturation Dive Training
For the U.S. Navy's 40 saturation divers, requalification on the Fly Away Saturation Diving System (SATFAD) here this week ensures the Navy retains its deep water recovery capability. The Sailors train on the SATFAD system three to four times a year to retain their qualifications on the unique system that allows these Navy divers to execute missions such as deep ocean salvage, aircraft or black box retrieval. "We train so the procedures become routine, and we're using this opportunity to train now until a real disaster happens," said Saturation Diving System Program Manager Paul McMurtrie, who is also a retired U.S. Navy Master Diver.

Maiden Voyage Freighter Docks in San Diego
The Port of San Diego celebrated the inaugural visit of Grieg Star's 'Star Laguna' with a plaque exchange ceremony. The Star Laguna, one of the newest cargo ships visiting San Diego, called at Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal, where it offloaded 10,000 tons of fertilizer and four yachts. Owned by the Grieg Star shipping company based in Bergen, Norway, the Star Laguna will make regular visits to San Diego. Human Smuggling Operation Uncovered on West Coast
There may be links between the case of 36 illegal Chinese immigrants found on a container ship here on Tuesday and a similar human smuggling operation uncovered last week in Long Beach, California, Canadian officials said. A Canadian Customs official said it was "highly likely" the two smuggling attempts were connected, but police said they had not confirmed the same smugglers were involved. Both attempts involved hiding the human cargo in squalid shipping containers designed for freight. The containers in which the migrants were found in Vancouver were bound for Long Beach. Canadian immigration officials have begun interviewing the 36 stowaways…
