ITF Blames BHP for Starving Crew

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) informed that crew members aboard a ship at a BHP terminal in Queensland are being neglected and underpaid."Crew aboard a ship at a BHP terminal in Queensland claim they are being starved and underpaid, in yet another instance of the coal giant’s veil of secrecy over its operations in Australian waters," said an ITF release.A seafarer aboard an 80,000-tonne bulk carrier, the Villa Deste, contacted ITF pleading for help. The starving crew claims to have no food and no onboard wages, and being fed on a $4 food budget per day.BHP is continuing to block ITF’s requests to inspect the vessel…

Erma First BWTS Installed for Evalend Shipping

Erma First ESK Engineering Solutions S.A. has concluded the installation of its Ballast Water Management System "Erma First" in two container ships being built at Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding for Greek owner Evalend Shipping Co. S.A. The agreement for the installations was signed in 2012 with Erma First who was awarded the contract against seven competitors. Erma First  was selected by both the shipyard and the owner on the basis of the system’s cost effectiveness, while a key factor was also the double filter system it carries.

Evalend to Join Lasco Logger Pool

Two of Evalend Shipping Co. S.A. newly purchased logger ships, the Ambassador and the Senator, have been placed in the Lasco Logger Pool. Evalend, a private management company in Athens, Greece, operates ten ships in its fleet, committed two Hakodate built loggers to the Pool, which is commercially managed by Lasco. Evalend will perform its own technical management of its vessels. In commenting on the announcement, Anton U. Genco Shipping to Acquire Six Drybulk Vessels

Genco Shipping & Trading Limited announced that it has agreed to acquire six drybulk vessels with an average age of approximately 2 years from affiliates of Evalend Shipping Co. S.A. for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $336m. The acquisition is subject to the completion of customary additional documentation and closing conditions. Genco plans to finance the acquisition through borrowings under its $1.4b revolving credit facility. The six vessels, comprised of three Supramax vessels and three Handysize vessels, are expected to be delivered to Genco during the fourth quarter of 2007. Hyundai Wins $300M Contract

Hyundai Corporation won shipbuilding contracts worth $300 million through its joint shipbuilding venture in China. The company announced that an additional deal concerning nine units of 5,500-ton bunkering tankers had been signed in January 13 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Qingdao. The event, which was presided by President Mark Juhn and other related personnel, was also used as the signing ceremony for the new-building contract of 16 units of 5,600-ton chemical tankers with Greek shipping company Evalend. The company announced that an additional deal concerning 9 units of 5,500-ton bunkering tankers had been signed in January 13 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Qingdao. The event, which was presided by President Mark Juhn and other related personnel, was also used as the signing ceremony for the new-building contract of 16 units of 5,600-ton chemical tankers with Greek shipping company Evalend. Hyundai Corporation Signs Shipbuilding Contract

Hyundai Corporation has risen as a major player in the global small and middle sized vessel market as ‘Qingdao Hyundai Shipbuilding,’ a company it launched last June in Qingdao China, has won shipbuilding contracts worth $300 million within a mere month. Corporation concluded a new shipbuilding contract involving 9 units of 5,500-ton bunkering tankers with Aegean, a Greek shipping company. The contract was signed at the Shangri-La Hotel in Qingdao in the presence of President Mark Juhn, CEO of Qingdao Hyundai Shipbuilding Chung In-Mo and Eleftherious Albertis, CTO of Aegean.
