As vessel fires have become more prevalent in the car/ro-ro passenger segment, the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) examines these occurrences as the group voices its concerns and puts forward recommendations to mitigate the risks. Lim Ki-tack Will Take Office As IMO Chief Next Month

Lim Ki-Tack, who has been elected as the next secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in a ballot, will start his four-year term in the beginning of next year, the South Korean government said, reports Yonhap. Lim will replace Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu to become the 9th IMO secretary-general starting Jan. 1. With six candidates in the running  it took five rounds of voting before Lim was able to collect more than half the 40 votes from IMO Council members. His inauguration was approved unanimously by the IMO’s general assembly last month, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. “I will go through thorough organization analysis and assessment to make the IMO become a more transparent and efficient international agency,” Lim was quoted as saying.

Ki-tack Lim Elected as IMO Secretary General

Ki-tack Lim from the Republic of Korea has been elected as the new Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), with effect from January 1, 2016, for an initial term of four years, the IMO announced. The current president of Busan Port Authority, Lim has served as the Republic of Korea’s Deputy Permanent Representative to IMO from 2006 to 2009 and was Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Flag State Implementation (FSI) from 2002 to 2004. Lim majored in nautical science at the Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU), Busan, graduating in 1977.

IMO PaperSmart Meeting Restructures Sub-Committees

The IMO Council, meeting for its 109th session in London has endorsed, in principle, a restructuring of IMO's Sub-Committees. The Council meeting was the first “PaperSmart” meeting for the Organization, and was considered a success by delegates. Delegates were invited to make the meeting "paperless" (PaperSmart), to reduce costs and make IMO meetings "environment friendly". Delegates were asked to come to the meeting with their own laptops, tablet computers, etc., together with their own Internet cables to connect to wired access points in the main meeting room. An enhanced wireless facility (Wifi) was provided for improved wireless access to the IMO documents site (IMODOCS) and to the Internet. The restructuring is part of a review and reform process initiated by Secretary-General Mr.

MEPC Focuses on Environmental Issues

As environmental issues took center stage at IMO during the 48th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) last week (October 7 to 11), delegates from more than 80 countries discussed a range of topics relating to the protection of the marine environment from pollution by ships. Under the chairmanship of Australia's Mike Julian, the Committee progressed its work in several key areas, including ship recycling, ballast water management and greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Draft IMO Guidelines on ship recycling were discussed in detail, with a view to producing a final draft for adoption by the next IMO Assembly in 2003. The draft guidelines note that, in the process of recycling ships, virtually nothing goes to waste.

IMO Issues Preview for Maritime Safety Committee

A revised Annex B to the 1988 Load Lines Protocol and amendments to the enhanced survey programme for bulk carriers and oil tankers are expected to be adopted when IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) meets at the Organization's London Headquarters for its 77th session from 28 May to 6 June. Other major issues on the MSC agenda include the implementation of security measures adopted in December 2002, places of refuge, the safety of bulk carriers, the proposed IMO Model Audit Scheme and implementation of the revised STCW Convention. The MSC (including Parties to the 1988 Load Lines Protocol) is expected to adopt what amounts to a comprehensive revision of the technical regulations of the original Load Lines Convention.
