Europe Grapples with Threat of Ships Sailing Blind

Europe has yet to fully wake up to the danger of maritime disasters caused by signal jamming and blackouts of satellite navigation devices, say the proponents of a back up system on trial in British and Dutch ports. Ships increasingly rely on systems that employ satellite signals to find a location or keep exact time including the Global Positioning System (GPS) and GLONASS. But experts say such systems are vulnerable to signal loss from solar weather effects or radio and satellite interference and can also be affected by intentional jamming by criminal gangs, nation states or potentially from militant groups. The General Lighthouse Authorities of the UK and Ireland (GLA) is pioneering a radio-based back-up prototype called eLoran.

Kannad's SafeLink AIS SART obtains Wheel Mark (Mark of Conformity) the European regulatory marking for marine equipment. Intermoor GNSS Equipent Order for Veripos

Veripos has received a major order for integrated mobile GNSS receiver equipment from the world’s largest full-service mooring company, InterMoor, an Acteon Company. The equipment, comprising ten Veripos LD3-GI and four LD2-G2 integrated demodulator and GNSS receivers, is being supplied together with upgrades of existing LD2-G1 and LD2-G2 units. Veripos will also provide the Aberdeen-based organization with a full range of GNSS positioning services under an exclusive five-year contract in support of its expanding worldwide activities, which include over 120 annual rig movements in deep to ultra-deep waters. IMO Releases Performance Standards for Radiocommunications

A new consolidated edition containing all IMO adopted performance standards for shipborne radiocommunications and navigational equipment is now available. Performance Standards for Shipborne Radiocommunications and Navigational Equipment (2008 Edition) is essential reading for the shipbuilding industry, manufacturers of equipment, shipyards and Administrations. ·                 Provision of radio services for the GMDSS.
